Be. it lrnoxvn that l, HENRY C. TH oMsom,
a citizen of the United States of America, residing at- Vest Roxbury, in the county of Suffolk and State of lifassachusetts, have 'invented new and useful Improvements yin File VJ rappers, of V'Whichthe following is a specification. n M Y f This invention relates to filek Wrappers or jackets for use in professional and businessv offices and Where all papers and data relating 'to a given subject are single reference, and Where, in many instances,-data is recorded upon the face ofthe Wrapper, 4 y
" `more`fully appear from the and also Where the subject matter:therein is of such a. nature asv to require the person in charge of said file to record uponfthe Wrapper, acts lrelative to the subject matter and the dates thereof. 'InA such latterre? quirements it has heretofore been customaryy In some instances the face of the Wrap-per has been printed with spaces left blank to recordthe distinctive name of the subject matter therein, or the name of the favor the file is created and also spaces for recording data with respect of an act which has been or is to be performed. When a considerable number of' such files are assembled in massed relation, as in a file drawer, in order to become cogni- Zant of the nature of the data recorded on the face of the file, it has been necessary to remove the file from its position in the iile drawer to observe same. The object of the present invention is to provide a flat file Wrapper preferably With folding flaps that may be designed similar to those hereiofore generally in use, but constructed and arranged to present a permanently doubled and folded-down edge portion extending along one side of the Wrapper and adapted to receive identification clips or like devices, said devices to act as identifying means Withrespect to data contained Within the file whereby said devices Will, Without removing the file from its assembled relation With respect of its neighbor in the file drawer, disclose to the person consulting the file certain predetermined data. For .example in the case of an application for Letters Patent, a blue signal secured upon the folded dovvn edge may be used to disclose to the observer, Withouthis handling the file, `the fact that fh@ application Pflpfs ha@ l??? i9 'lllkept collected .in a V fiat Wrapper or jacket for convenient',

jects' and adavantages of vthe invention will,
y i j following detailed description taken'- in connection with the accompanying drawings, andthe distinctive features of novelty-Will be pointed out in the vappended claims.
Referring to the drawings :l

Fig. 4 is an end view showing the flaps partly open, and
Fig. 5 is an end View showing the flaps fully opened.
The Wrapper yor jacketl of my invention may be produced of any suitable material such as stout and fairly stiff paper, 'either plain or suitably reinforced as desired. rEhe Wrapper comprises a front or body portiony 10 of a length corresponding to the length desired for the Wrapper, and of a Width corresponding to the desired Width of the Wrapper plus a small addition to provide for the permanently doubled and folded down edge portion o-f my invention as new to be explained. Flaps 11, 12, and 13 c2:- tend from the sides, and from one or both ends of the body portion to be vfolded in- Ward to constitute the back of the Wrapper in accordance with usual practice, there being only one end flap 13 shown in the present embodiment, although this is merely illustrative, and so far as the invention is concer-ned the Wrapper may be produced Without any end flaps at all. t
In accordance With my invention the material of the Wrapper is permanently doubled and folded down upon itself in- Ward for a small distance along one edge Portion ivf the body `1Q, this Gebl-@ 1 Owe portion being indica-ted at 14. This foldeddovvn portion may be glued or otherwise cemented or seciired to the body 10 so that it presents a` permanent, stiffened edge extending the length of the wrapper at one side thereof adapted to receive one or more clips 15 that may serve as, or bear any suitable identification indicia. One of the side lla-p, i. e. as shown the flap 12, extends from this folded-down edge portion with the line of flexing of this flap at the inner edge of this bent-down portion as indicated at 16. `Hence the bending o f this iiap 12 in nowise interferes with the mounting of the clips 15 on the edge portion 14, and the wrapper may thus be opened and manipvulatted as required without any tendency to dislodge the clips 15. I am aware that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit o-r essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference beinghad to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A file wrapper or jacket, comprising a body portion with folding flaps borne thereby, and with a. relatively stiffened and reinforced edge along lone side thereof, prosaid side, from the inner edge of which folded-down portion one of said flaps extends and is predisposed for bending.
2. A one-piece le wrapper or jacket, oomprising a. body portion with folding fia-ps extending therefrom,- and with a relatively stilfened and reinforced edge at one side thereof produced by al permanently doubled and adhesively secured portion folded down along said side, and with one of said flaps extending and predisposed for flexing from the inner side of said stiffened edge portion.
3. A one-piece file wrapper or jacket, comprising a body portion provided with a folding flap, and with a. stilfened edge along one side thereof, produced by portion folded down and held permanently doubled, by adhesive, from the inner side of which said flap extends and is predisposed for bending.
4. A one-piece file wrapper or jacket, comprising a body portion provided with a folding Hap, and with a stiffened edge along one side thereof, produced by a permanently doubled, folded down and adhesively secured portion, from the inner side of which said flap extends and is predisposed for bending, and a member adapted to bear identification indiciaI or the like secured to said stitlened edge.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
HENRY O. THOMSON.
