' M. F. WATERS I GAUGE COCK Filed July 30. 1924 Malawi}? We Va Patented Aug. 25, 1925.
UNITED STATES 1,551,184, PATENT OFFICE.
MILLARD F. WATERS, or TULSA, OKLAHOMA, ASSIGNOR T0 S ITH SEPARATOR COM- IPANY, or TULSA, OKLAHOMA.
GAUGE COCK.
Application filed July 30, 1924. Serial No. 729,134.
7 '0 (ZZZ whom it may can (161% Be. it known that I, MILLARD F. WATERS, citizen of the United States, residing at Tulsa, in the county of Tulsa and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gauge Cocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make.
and use the same. a
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in water gauge cooks for testing the water level in boilers and the like, and has for its object to provide such a device, simple in construction and which can be manufactured at a reduced cost.
Another object of my invention is that when the seal is broken, the steam will be permitted to exhaust directly into the air, and not come in contact with any part or parts of the gauge cock, to cause their corrosion, or to be deflected down against the boiler, or upon the operator.
Niththe above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention consists in the novel features herein set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which numerals of like character designate similar parts throughout both views,
Fig. 1 is a side view, partly in section, showing the several elements of the device, and
Fig. 2-is a detail view of-the valve sealing disk.
Fig. 3 is a view of another form of sealing disk, showing a plain face without the valve seats. I
The numeral 1 designates the main body of my improved gauge cock and is preferably composed of brass, threaded at one end 2, and adapted to be screwed into a boiler head (not shown On the upper side of the body 1, and integral therewith I provide an upwardly extending lug 8, having an aperture 4 therein. Through the gauge cock body 1, I provide a longitudinally extending passage 12, which tapers toward the outer end 13, of said body.
5 represents a handle of heavy material,
'which also serves as a weight, as will be" described later. At one end of the handle said squared end 21, to receive a lock nut 15.
Between the lips 11 and the base of the handle 5, on the squared portion 10 of the rod 9, is removably secured a sealing disk 16, composed of a soft material, preferably soft metal, and which is provided with a squared aperture 17 which corresponds with and fits over the squared portion 10, being held in place by the lips 11 as aforesaid. On each of the faces 18 and 19 of'the disk 16, I provide plurality of valve seats 20, in the form of small circular cut out portions adapted to engage the exhaust end 13 of the passage 12 in the cock body 1.
The operation of my device is obvious. The threaded portion 2 is permanently screwed into the boiler head, with the lug 3 extending upwardly. The weight of the handle 5, pivoted on the cotter pin 8, causes the sealing disk 16 to press firmly against the exhaust outlet 13 of the gauge cock body 1, and seal the same.
When it is desired to test the height of the water or to break the seal, the handle 5 is lifted, thus freeing the outlet from the sealing disk 16 and allowing the steam to exhaust directly into the air.
When one valve seat is worn out, the-lock nut 15 is loosened and the rod 9 is turned by the squared end 24 until another seat comes in place.
After all of the valve seats on the face 18 are used until they are no longer effective, the nut 15 may be taken off, the rod 9 pulled out and the disk 16 taken off of the squared portion 10 and reversed so as to expose its face 19 to the exhaust outlet. It is obvious, while I have shown the rod 9, and the expansion 10 and lips 11 integral, that they may be made in separate parts, and detach ably secured together.
While I have described the sealing disk 16 as having the faces 18 and 19' provided passage 12. From the foregoing, it is believed that my invention may be clearly'understood without further description and in closing,it
may be stated that numerous changes may be made in the details of my device without departing from the spirit of the invention as disclosed in the following claims.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
- 1. A gauge cock adapted to be secured to a boiler head, includlng a body portion threaded atone end and provided with a tapered aperture, an u wardly extending lug integral with sai body portion, a handle of heavy material pivoted to said lug, a rod extending longitudinally through said handle, and terminating'at its inner end in an enlarged portion of a suitable shape, having lips integral therewith, and at its outer end in aportion adapted to receive a wrench, a sealing disk of soft metal, apertured to correspond with the shape of the inner end of said rod, adapted to fit on said end and to be held in place by said lips, and means for locking said rod and disk in a predetermined position.
, 2. A gauge cockadapted to be secured to aboiler head, including an apertured body portion, a handle pivoted to said body portion, a disc of soft material provided with a plurality of recessed valve seats on each face thereof, mounted on said handle for sealing the aperture in said body portion.
and means extending through said handle for adjusting said sealing means.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
