GAUGE COCK FOR BOILERS.

The present invention relates to a gauge cock for boilers, and has for its principal object to provide a structure which is easy to operate, strong, eflicient, reliable, durable, not likely to become easily out of order, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed. Y
ln the gauge cocks now in common use it often happens that the handles break, and the operator almost invariably has his hands sca-lded,
An object of the invention is to provide a structure wherein the breaking of the handle will in no way cause the opening of the valve, or allow the escape of steam or hot water.
A further important object of the invention is to provide a gauge cocl of this nature which will prevent leakage, corroding, and the like, by preventing foreign matter unseating the valve, or preventing it from seating tightly.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing rlhe figure is a sectional view through my improved gauge cock showing a portion of the handle in elevation.
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that 1 designates the body of the coclr which has its inner end reduced and threaded as at 2. The body is provided with a longitudinally extending bore 3 which is en" larged as at l within t-he reduced end, and terminates in an annular recess 5. A valve seat G is formed between the recess and the end of the enlarged portion 4 of the bore. An internally threaded recess 7 is provided at the other end of the bore for receiving a packing gland 8. A stein 9 is slidable through the packing gland 8, and through the bore 3, and its enlarged portion el and terminates in a valve 10 seatable on the seat 6. A pin l1 extends through the other end of the stem, and a compressible spring 12 is held under tension between the outer end of the body 1 and the pin 11 being disposed about the stem thereby normally holding the valve l0 in a closed position on the seat 6.
A lug 13 extends diagonally from the inner end of the casing l. A handle 14 has one corner provided with ears 15 for straddling the lug 13, and a pivot pin 16 extends through the lug and the ears, thereby pivoting the handle 14 on the body l. It will be seen that the handle 1e'- may be swung down-- wardly to engage the outer end of the stein 9 and so as to unseat the valve l0 so that the steam or water inay escape through the enlarged portion 4 of the bore 3, through a diagonally disposed passage 16.
It is thought that the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will now be clearly understood without a more detailed description thereof. It is desired however. to point out that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departingl from the spirit or scope of the invention hereinafter claimed or sacrilicing any of its advantages.
Having thus described the invention, what l claim Vas new and desire to secure by Let? ters Patent is n A valve structure of the class described including a one-piece body having a longitudinally extending bore with one end en larged and terminating in a seat, a valve associated with the seat, a stein extending from the valve through the bore and slidable therein, and terminating exteriorly of the body, a spring associated with the stein on the exterior portion thereof, a pin project ing through the exterior end of the stem, said spring inipinging against the pin and the adjacent end of the body for normally holding the stem so that the valve will be closed on its seat, a lug extending integrally diagonally from the body, a handle and an ear projecting integrally and diagonally from one end of the handle and pivoted to the lug so that said handle may be swung to engage said end thereof having the ear with the exterior end of the stom for moving the valve from the seat, said body being provided with a passageway leadingfrom the enlarged portion of the bore to the exteriorn In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
