CONTAINER.
Application filed July 28, 1924. Serial No. 728,736.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENSQN DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Social Circle, in the county of lValton, State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Containers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in receptacles and particu larly to receptacles for containing poisons.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a receptacle in which are to be placed certain poisons, said receptacle hav ing an alarm which sounds upon opening the lid, to warn persons of the dangerous contents of the box,,and thus obviate taking poisons instead of harmless medicines.
Another object is to provide a simple and effective alarm mechanism which is adapted to be operated when the lid of the box is raised.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a poison container, made in accordance withthe invention, the lid being raised to show the alarm operating loop.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, represents a box having a hinged lid 11 thereon, and carrying a depending loop 12, to which reference will be made later herein. The interior of the box has a vertical transverse partition 13, dividing the same into the poison containing compartment 1 1, and the alarm compartment 15. Secured to the rear wall of the box, in the compartment 15, is a bell 16, and in the end wall of the box, and in the partition 13, are formed the small circular openings 17 in which are supported the trunnions 18 of the transverse clapper supporting shaft 19. Carried by the side of the shaft 19, adjacent' the bell, is a clapper comprising a spring arm 20 having on its outer end the hammer ball 21 for striking the bell. From the opposite side of the shaft there projects a beveled lug 22, with which the before mentioned loop 12 is arranged to engage, when the lid is in closed position, and which will be pulled upwardly, to rock the shaft, when the lid is raised, said loop releasing the lug to permit the same to rock backtoward normal position by means of the spring 23. This spring 23 is secured to the bottom of the box and to the said lug 22. Projecting inwardly from the end wall of the box, within the compartment 15, is a stop pin 24; which is arranged to be engaged by a similar pin 25 carried by the shaft 19. The engagement of the pin 25, against the pin 2%, brings the shaft to a sudden stop,
thereby permitting the spring arm 20 to flex and cause the ball 21 to strike the bell, giving a sound which is a warning to the person opening the box, that the box contains poisons.
It will be noted that the upper face of the lug 22 is beveled so that when the lid is moved into closed position, the loop ,12 will ride on the beveled face and rock the shaft 19, against the tension of the spring 23, whereupon the lug will snap into the loop and engage with the bight portion thereof. Then, when the lid is raised the lug will be lifted, causing the shaft to rock until the loop has released itself from the lug, whereupon the spring 23 snaps the shaft back until the pin 25 strikes the pin 24, and permits the arm 20 to flex and engage the ball 21 with the bell.
What is claimed is: i Y
1. A box having a movable lid, a bell in the box, a resiliently urged clapper mounted in position, a clapper supporting shaft having a projection to strike a bell, and a member on the lid constructed and arranged to engage the said projection when the lid is in closed position and to pull the clapper when said lid is raised.
2. A box having a movable lid, a loop mounted on the lid, a bell in the box, a rock shaft adjacent the bell, a spring clapper on the shaft, and a projection on the shaft for engagement within said loop when the lid is closed and whereby the shaft will be rocked to cause the clapper to strike the bell, upon the lid being raised.
3. A box having a movable lid, a loop carried by said lid for disposition within the box when said lid is closed, a bell mounted in the box, a rock shaft adjacent the bell, a
spring clapper arm carried by the shaft, a. the rocking movement of the shaft in one projection on the shaft for engagement direction, whereby t0 permit the clapper to Within the said 100p when the lid is closed strike the hell, anda spring for rocking the 10 and to become disengaged from the loop to shaft in said direction.
rock the shaft when the lid is raised," and In testimony whereof I afliX my signature. stop means on the box for engagement by means on the shaft for suddenly stopping BENSON DAVIS.
