GARBAGE-CAN.
'; Application filed bctober 22, 1917; s ria1,No.. 1s-7,97a j To all whomc't may concern:
Be it known that I, WADE citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Cans,
of which the following is a specification.
. little as the top of the garbage'can is opened This invention relates to garbage cans,
and it relates more particularly to certain improvements for rendering garbage cans more sanitary than is the casewith garbage cans of ordinary construction. I
Another object of the invention is to pro vide an improved form of disinfectant container and dispenser in'the top of the garbage can, so that the disinfectant which is contained thereby will be dispensed little by or closed.
Another object is to provide 'a device of, this character which is so simple of con-- struction that the cost of manufacture is reduced to the minimum. s
Other objects and advantages may be come apparent to persons who read the followin details of description in connection with the accompanying drawings-in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a garbage can constructed in accordance withmy invention and Fig. 2 is a horlzontal sectional view thereof.'
Referring to these drawings in detail, in,
which similar reference characters correspond with similar parts throughout the several views,- V
The garbage can consists ofan outer receptacle 5 and an inner receptacle 6, the latter being" intended to receive the garbage while the receptacle 5" is intended to. receivemay be raised and lowered, and Vitrnay al o be provided with a depending flange 11 which fits over and around theupper end edge to form a stop, an inner receptacle of the outer receptacle 5 However, the
H. WieerNs, a
I Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented foregoingareamere details of ordinaryconstruction; but the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of a reticu lated disk or diaphragm 12 which is hingedly connected at 13 to the inner vertical side of the lid 8. The lid is provided with a spring catch 14 which issecured in place by any appropriate means, and the inner end of this catch extends through an opening 15 into such position as to engage with the under side of the diaphragm 12 and co' operate with the hinge 13 when supporting said diaphragm. 1 p 7 I V The lidmay be provided withan internal annular flange 16 which is substantially of the same diameter as" the receptacle 6 and is centrally alined therewith, for a purpose hereinafter disclosed. V
- In operating. this device, the lid 8 is first turned through an angle of substantially 180, so that the. lid is inverted; the diaphragm 12 is then swung on its hinge 13, so that the lime or other disinfectant 7 may be placed therein. If desirable, the lime. may be placed only within the space inclosedby the flange 16, and inthis event, the lime is normally confined above the in nerreceptacle, and when the lid is opened and closed, the lime is sprinkled a little at a time onto the top of the garbage in said inner receptacle. However, it sometimes ocours that garbage is, spilled in the annular space between the receptacles 5 and 6, and to prepare for this contingency, it is at times desirable to fill the annular space between the flange 16 and the outer wall of the lid 8 Moreover, by dividing the lid into separate compartments by means ofthe flange 16, the lime is not shifted so as to be confined ex? clusively in one side of the lid, but the lime 7 is kept distributed inthe front and rear sides and in the middle portion of thelid.
Although I have described this embodiment of my invention in minute detail, it is to be understood that my invention is not limited to theexact details of construction and arrangement of parts, and that my vention is susceptible to slight changessuch as do not constitute a departure from the" inventive idea pointed out the accom panying" claim i What I claim'a's my invention is:
A garbagecan, comprising an outer re ceptao'le having an outer, bead near its upper 10 tacles, and a, perforated diaphragm held against the lower edge of the inner depend ing flange and extending across the space inclosed by the outer dependingflange of the cover.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature 15 presence of tWo Witnesses.
