C. E. BEAN STEAM WASHER Filed July 11, 1924 mm at STEAIM 'W'ASI-IER.
Application filed July 11,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, CHAnLns Evens BEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of lVyandotte and State of Kansas, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Steam ashers, of which the "following is a specification.
This invention relates to that cl; of household washing apparatus in which a flow of hot water and steam from the lower part oi? the containing vessel is discharged in a continuous manner upon the clothes in the upper portion of the vessel, the clothes being stirred or turned by the usual hand operated dolly mechanism as required, and more especially to the type of such washers "\i'hich terms the subject matter of my prior Patent No. 1,202,150, dated October 24, 1916.
The object of the present improvement is to provide a structural formation and combination oi parts by means of which an opposed retarding action is set up in opposition to the normal turning movement of the stirrer or dolly ot the apparatus, to attain an effective change or turning of the clothes being washed, and in connection with such changing or turning action provide means whereby the hot water and steam are discharged into the clothes in a thorough and eii'ective manner, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
in the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a central vertical sectional elevation oi? a steam washer having the present improvement applied.
Fig. 2, is a horizontal section on line 2 2, Fig. 1. 1
Like reference numerals indicate like parts in both views.
is shown in the drawing, the casing or container 1 of the present washer is of the usual cylindrical form, closed at its lower end by a fixed bottom 2, and at top by a removable cover 3, in which the usual or conventional vertically arranged stirrer of dolly 4- is rcvolubly mounted, as well as the operatiug gear wheel 5, gear sector 6 and operating handle 7, substantially the same as in my aforesaid Patent No. 1,202,150.
A horizontal partition 8, by which circula- 1924. Serial No. 725,378.
t-ion oi hot water and steam within the casing 1 is directed and controlled, has the usual position within the casing 1 a short distance above the bottom 2 of the same, and reniovably supported in such position'by legs 9 as shown. in the present improvement said partition is of a saucer shape with its upwardly flaring marginal portion 10 termed with a plurality of raised nodes or protuberances 11 of a rounded form and elliptical outline and disposed circularly around the mid-width of said marginal portion 10 as shown.
Such special formation and arrangement of the nodes or protuberances 11, is a material part of the invention, in that the same has been found after extended practical tests and changes with and in the older patented constructions of applicant, to attain a much more eiiective turning, rubbing and washing action on the lower part of the mass of clothes, operated on.
The partition 8 has approximately the same diameter as the internal diameter of the container 1 and its periphery is formed with notches 12 adapting the partition to engage and fit the plurality of vertical conduits now to be described.
T he vertical conduits 13 above referred to are of a semi-circular form in horizontal section and of a tapering form from bottom to top, and are fixedly secured in circular spaced relation on the inner face of the container 1, as shown. Each conduit 13 is open at bottom to the chamber beneath the partition 8 aforesaid, and is also open at its upper end into the upper portion of the clothes holding chamber of the container 1, and in addition a vertical series of orifices 14: are formed in the inwardly facing portion of the wall of a conduit 13, the construction being adapted to attain an ei'li'ective and thorough discharge of the flow of hot water and steam, as the same passes up the conduits 13, into the mass of clothes as the same is changed and turned in manner above set forth.
Having thus fully described my invention what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a steam washer, the combination of a casing provided with vertical conduits at its sides, a removable cover for the casing carrying a dolly, a removable horizontal partition supported in the casing a distance above the bottom of the said casing and "formed with a central plane portion and an up Warclly flared marginal portion formed ii turn with a circular series of nodes of an elliptical shape and arranged in separated relation at the mid-Width of sairl marginal Portion of the partition. 10
Signed at Kansas City, Kansas, this 5th ay of July 1924.
CHARLES EVANS BEAN.
