WASHING MACHINE Filed Deo. 5 1, 195o' s sheets-sheet 3 80 water-tight Patented Meals, 1932 UNITED- STA muy r. wnnum, or navnnroa'r, Iowa, 'Assrenon 'ro 'aan v navmmon'r, Iowa wasnme' mc'n'mn l Application nled December This invention relates to washing machines y and particularly to that form of washing machine in which an oscillatable tub is provided and means arev also Aprovided whereby the tub may be oscillated and the clothes shifted from side to side within Vthe tub. A The general object of the present invention isy to provide a deviceof this character which is very simple, which may be cheaply made, which has been found ver eiective in practice and which the c othes are caused, as they are thrown outward by cen'- trifugal force, to be swung through the water or held/ while the center of the tub' upon a momentar ces'- sation of the rotation, the clothesl will be again engaged and hirled about upon an oscillationfof the tub. y A further object isto provide a construction of this character in which three difier- `ent projections or projecting membersin the tub act to engage the 'clothes upon an oscillationA of the tub, thus causing the clothes to be washed at three d tub.-
Another object is to provide a machine of this character which has no dash'er post in the center,thus doing away withexpensive tub.
Other objects have to do with means by the machineis oscillated. My invention `is illustrated 85 panying drawings, wherenz-f- Y'F1gu cal sectional view wherein the accomre 1 'is la vert1 throu h a washing machinev constructed .in 'acco ance with my'invention; l
Figure 2 is a section onthe line 2-2 of 4D- Fi re 1;
, Figure 3 is Fi 1; i
'gure 4 is atop plan view of the machine on a reduced scale.
48 Referring a tub. which may be made of sheet metal, sheet aluminum, or of any other suitable materiaL This tub has a flat central portion at its bottom an the water in the tub washes' y 15 them yand whenv the clothes move inward to iferent pointswithin thel bearings inthe bottom of they a section on the line 3%-3 of' to these drawings, 10 designatesp d an upwardly inclined portion 45.0 11. Theiat bottom of the tub is engaged by '1r-'lasvv PATENT. oli-Fica#4 nx coscia' or 31, leso. semi No. 505,395.
a cast iron base l2havin'g`a huh portion 13. From this cast iron base extend upward thel arms 14 which are offset yat their upper ends and haveriveted to them the angular brass P v pieces 15. The tub at its upper end is formed with the'in'wardly extending splash ring 16. Passing through the hub portion 13 and attached to this hubtportion in any suitable manner is a shaft 17. Disposed:,within the tubare four wings constituting a dasher designated'lS which is held td the bottom of the tub and to the shaftby means .of the bolt 19 or inany other's'uitable manner. Normally closing the opening defined by the splash ring 16 is a lid 20 to which is riveted an aluminum ring carryingv depending pins21. T
Extending upward from the inclined portion 11 of the' tub are a pluralitylof vertical members 22 whichlare preferably made of copper and soldered. to the tub or`otherwise attached thereto. These extend upward to the lash ring and are held to the splash ring p y aluminum knobs 23 bolted on the splash ring.
. The sha t mechanism as vfollows. within an exterior housing 24 and extending downward through .this housin exteriorly of the tub is a drivingshaft 25 w ich may be driven in any suitable-manner and which is mounted in asupporting bearing 26 and a housing 27. I have illustrated the lower end,4 of this driving shaft within the housing 27. `as bein provided vwith the worm wheel. 28 engage by aworm in th driving' shaft and connected to any suitable source ofV ower. vThe shaft 25 carries adjacent the ousing 27 a crank 30. From this crank extends a connecting rod 31. This connecting rod is slidingly engaged with a swiveled pin or head 32 mounted upon a segment gear 33 pivotally mounted upon lthe frame'of the machine at 34. This segment gear engages with a gear wheel 35 Iwhich is mounted u onthe shaft 17 in any suitable manner. prings 36 are attached at their inner ends to the bottom of the tubA and at their outer ends to hook's 37 on'a sup- 17 andthe tub -are oscillated by ieces 15.- The tub is' soldered to these brass 55 The tub is housedv v 29, this worm shaft bel either direction and to return the tub to a l normal position.
.A gear to cause an oscillation of --against the swiveled 'pin 32 and Disposed on each side of thel swiveled piu 32 and surrounding the connecting rod are the springs 39, these being coiled compression springs which bear at their inner ends at their outer ends against stops 40.
It will be obvious now that as theshaft'25.
is rotated, the connectingrod 31 will be oscillated which will oscillate the segment gear 33 and cause-the oscillation of the tub in opposite directions. The gear wheel 35 is.
of connectingthe shaft operatively to this the shaft, I provide the sliding clutch 41 mounted upon the shaft and-having rotative engagementv therewith of any desired character. Thev upper face of this clutch is toothed, notched or otherwiseformed to engage 'withthe under face of the gear wheel 35. The clutch is shifted into or out of engagement with the gear wheel 3 5 by means df a bell crank lever 42 pivoted upon' a bracket 43. The depending arm of this bell crank lever is plvoted to a connecting rod 4 4which in turn is connected to a crank arm 45 mounted upon the lower end of a vertical shaft 46 which extends up through the outer housing 24 and e lly 47 resting 1s provided with a handle at its upper end. Thus the clutch may be shifted into or out of engagement with the gear wheel. The shaft 17 may be supported in any desired manner but I have shown the` shaft as being supported on a ball step bearing designated generalupon a transverse cross bar 48 of the frame. The shaft25 may' constitute through the housing 'andLV operatively construction used where the nected to a wringer in a manner not shown.
The7 tub is spout 49' where from the tub. While I have heretofore described the con-- y the water may be run of yet incase it isa cast aluminum tub, the
and the lower ends of the n copr ipe 21 are held 1n place by. .aluminum o s like the mechanism, 'causes the water to move.
wings of the dasher 18 are cast with the tub Slgna me' "f naief-sae in'one direction and its reversal,the clothes will move toward thecenter 'of thetub and Will be engaged by the pins 21 andby the i tirely free from any complicated mechanism.
The purpose of the springs 36 is to pull the tub straight `with the. spout 49 to the front when the tub is out of gear and to make Thus the clothes are washed as it .the tub come back easily and to stop the l swing of the tub which it would ordinaril I claim .1. A washing machine 'including a tub, ,driving means nately in opposite directions, the tub having a bottom fiat at itscentral portion and vthen extending upward and outward to the side of the tub, the side of the tub extending verticallyy upward, the top of the tub having an inwardly extending splash ring, upstanding wings forming a dasherfand mounted.
upon the central portion of the tub, members extending downward from the splash ring to the inclined portion of the bottom of the tub, and a cover for the tub havingfdownwardly extending pins.
