Be it known that l, HARRY C. HANsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing in St. yPaul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have inventeda new and useful Coat, of which the following is a Aspecification.

My invention relates to improvements in coats. Y

An object of the invention is to provide an improved lined-totheedge ycoat wherein that portion of the lining extending to the one front edge of the coat shell constitutes a tlap and the adjacent portion of said shell comprises a pocket to receive the flap, said flap, when unsheathed from said pocket, providing a fly between which and said poclreted portion of the coat the opposing front edge of said coat may be inserted.

Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear in the following description, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement ofparts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the illustrated garment includes `the usual double breasted shell 10 having the ordinary complementary buttons 11 and loops 12 to fasten the coat closed. rlhis type of coat, customarily sheep-lined, is used largely for roughwinter wear by persons engaged in active pursuits. Some coats of this nature are lined only to within four inches or so of the edges of the front portions of the coat, the lapping unlined poi'- tions serving as the sole protection for the front of a wearers body. Other coats are lined to one edge and thus constructed provide a complete body encircling lining when the coat is closed. My improved coat is of mentioned theentire sheep lining to the coat shell, I limit the permanent part of my lining to a main portion 13, .both edges of which fall short of the edges of the front portions 10a, 10b of the shell 10. Extending from` one edge of the main lining portion. 13 in the form of a continuation thereof is a flap 14: of sheep-lining, the same being bound with a hinge-strip 15, which is secured by a seam 16 to the coat shell portion 10a. This flap le is normally sheathed in .an inwardly opening pocket (Fig. l) provided at the inner margin of the front portion 10aof the coat shell with which said flap 14: is associated. Said pocket is formed between the coat shell portion 10a and a combined facing and pocket-piece 17, the inner edge of which is left free in the sitching of saidl piece 17 to the coat shell. rlhe hinge-strip 15, previously mentioned, is fastened to the coat shell by the seam 16 along a line adjacent to the mouth of the flap pocket and the flap 15 may be sheathed therein (Figs. 1`

and or unsheathed therefrom (Figs. 1 and 3), as may be desired.r Snap fastener members 18, secured at intervals along the hinge strip 15, have complementary fastener members 18a on the free edge of the pocket f piece 17. The fastener members 18, 18aM provide foi' lock-ing the pocket-piece 17 closed upon the flap 14e sheathed within the pocket. rlhus disposed, the flap 14 serves its purpose in completing the encircling of the body by the shell lining while the pocket piece 17, covering said flap, faces the full lined portion 10a of the coat shell and finishes said coat portion to correspond with the other permanently finished front portion thereof.

A user normally wears the coat with the flap 1e sheathed as above explained, but in cold windy weather, he may wish to employ the flap 14- as a body protecting fly. This latter use of the flap 1e is had by first unsnapping the fastener members 18, 18a then unsheathing said ap le from its pocket and, iinally, buttoning the coat closed with the edge of the front portion 10b inserted between the pocketed portion 10a and the flap le 6). ln its relation as a body protecting fly, the flap le not only traps the elements against entry to the wearers body, but functions, as in its alternate relation, as

a completing element in the body encircling lining of the coat.

Changes in the specic form of my invention, as herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of whatis claimed without Having described myk invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

1. In a coat, a shell,a pocket piece extending along the inner margink of vone front portion of said shell and secured thereto at one edge thereof to form an inwardly opening pocket between said pocketpiece and front shell portion, a lining for said shell including a main lining portion and a flap comprising a continuation of said lining portion, a hinge-strip carrying said flapv portion and secured to the shell along a line adjacent to the mouth of vsaid pocket, said flap being adapted to be sheathed in said pocket or unsheathed therefrom and, in said latter relation, to provide a body protecting iiy in that position of the other portion ofy said shell disposed .between said flap and said pocleted shell portion, a fastener' memberV on the free edge of said pocket .piece anda complementary fastening member on said hinge strip, said members in cooperation, one with the other,be1ng adapted to secure theV pocket closed upon the flap sheathed therein.

2. 3. In a coat, a. shell, a pocket piece extended along the inner' margin-of one :front portion of said shelland seamed thereto at the edge thereof to form an inwardly opening pocket between said pocket piece and front shell portion, a lining for said shell vincluding a main lining portion and a flap comprising a continuation of said main lining portion at one edge thereof, a hingestrip carrying'saidflap portion and secured to the shell alonga line adjacent to the mouth of said pocket, said Hap being adapt ed to be sheathed in said pocket or unsheathed therefrom and, in said latter relation, toprovide a body protecting fly when thev other front portion of the shell is inserted between saidV pocketed shelllportion and said flap.

In a coat, ashell having an inwardly opening pocket locatedatthe inner `margin of one front portion thereof anda lining for said shell including ya" flap `portion hinged to the shell along a line adjacent to the mouth of said pocket, said flap being capable of being sheathed in said pocket or unsheathed therefrom, the latter relation of said flap yadapting the same for use as a body protecting fly between which and the adjacent pocketed portion of said shell the opposing front shell portion may be inserted.
