GASOMETER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KoNnAn JAGSCHITZ, a citizen of Austria, and a resident of Mainz. Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gasometers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gasometers and more particularly to that type of gasometers in which the varying gas space is closed by a closing body in the shape of a disc sliding gastight over the inside wall of the gasometer.
The'low weight of this type of gasomcter which, theoretically would be posslble, is in practice, limited b the requirements as to strength and rigidity of the structure itself of the gasometer and of the sliding disc, as also in view of the external strains set up by wind pressure or by the weight of a sheet of snow occasionally resting upon the roof, and of the internal gas pressure, and it is the object of this invention to provide an improved stiffening for such gasometers, in which great rigidity and extreme lightness of weight shall be combined, which shall also allow of a comparatively very light structure of the entire gasometer, and which will therefor enable a considerable saving in the costs of construction and materials.
This object of the invention is mainly arrived at by providing either at the top of a gas holder polygonal in cross section, or at both top and bottom, a member of a cross section which will form spatial angles to be enclosed within the vertical walls of the gasometer.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the accompanying drawing which diagrammatically illustrates the invention by way of example.
Fig. 1 is a vertical section through the improved gasometer, and

The gas holder 1, upon the inner walls of which the closing disc 2 is adapted to slide up and down, resembles in plan View the shape of a polygon, bounded by a large number of flat or substantially flat Vertical panels 1 1 1, 1&0.
At the top, or at both top and bottom of the gas holder 1 stiffening member 3 is arranged which may be constructed either in the shape of a hollow sheet metal 'body, or as a lattice or girder work, enclosing spatial angles with the vertical panels of the gas holder.
According to the example shown in the drawing the stifiening member is shown to consist of a sheet metal structure at the top of the gas holder, having sides 3%, 3 3". whereas the sliding disc is strengthened bv a similar stifl'ening member formed of a spatial lattice which is likewise denoted b the reference 3*, 3 3, of which the individual girders may be arranged in any known or convenient manner.
In order to further increase the rigidity of the structure the joints between the various panels are made in the shape of angle seams with their edges flanged outwardly so as to form strengthening ribs 4 and which, if desired, may be arranged to enclose additional strengthening members 5.
To give an example of the rigidity of a gasometer strengthened according to the invention it may be stated, that metal plate of a thickness of only four millimeters has proved to be sufficiently strong for a gasometer of 70 meters height and a diameter of meters. Thus very extraordinary savings in the costs of construction and mate rials may be obtained incomparison to the hitherto usual construction of gasometers.
What I claim is In combination, in a disc type gasometcr, a gas holder of polygonal cross section and a strengthening member, said member extending inwardly from the walls of the gas holder and having at least some portions of its outer periphery incontact with the in terior of the gas holder.
