Abstract

Dums.-A dam or weir for forming reservoirs for agricultural and industrial purposes is vaulted, and the radius of curvature of the mean arc of the horizontal sections increases from bottom to the top, so that the dam may be of substantially the same thickness throughout its height. Fig. 2 shows a vertical section of a dam wall the extrados of which is a surface of revolution about the axis 5-6, and the generatrix is a suitable curve 7-8, such that at and near the lower parts of the wall the weight of the wall is equivalent to the hydraulic pressure under it. The extrados may be conoidal, ellipsoidal, paraboloidal, or hyperboloidal, and may have incurved generatrices. Fig. 4 shows a multiple-wall dam with three successive walls 15, 17, 19 of the form shown.
