R. C. RUSSELL CARD INDEX Filed Oct. 2. 1923 Patented Aug. 4, 1925.
UNITED STATES ROBERT C. RUSSELL, OF 1ITT$BUBGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
Application filed October 2, 1923-. Serial No. 666,098.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Rosnar C. RUSSELL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Card Indexes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in card indexes and more particularly to means whereby the cards are supported and protected, one object of the invention being to provide a simple structure in which a transparent shield shall be utilized to protect a face of the card and also serve to removably connect the card with a support.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings;
Figure 1 is a front perspective view of a card index structure showing an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a rear view;
Figure 3 is a sectional view of the arrangement shown in Figures 1 and 2, and
Figure 4 is a sectional view in which re versal of the arrangement of the transparent shield or protector is shown.
In the drawings, I have shown an index card 1 and a support comprising a body member or portion 2, and a strip or member 3 hinged to the body-member through the medium of a fabric strip 4 which is cemented to one face of the body member of the support and to one face of the hinge strip or member 3. The card 1 is connected with the support in the manner hereinafter described and said support is formed at its ends with tongues 5 (which may be covered by the fabric strip) to enter guideways in a suitable holder, not shown. The support member 2 is provided centrally with an upwardly projecting tongue 6 and a slot 7 is 1 provided in the portion of the fabric which forms-the hinge, for the accommodation of the tongue 6 of another card support, whereby a plurality of card supports, when as CARD INDEX. 1 3 1 v pro sembled in a holder, may have interlocking or intermeshing connection with each other.
A shield or protector 8 of transparent material, such as celluloid, covers one face of the card 1. In the construction shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3, the shield or protector may be said to cover the rear face of the card. The celluloid shield is provided at its lower edge with an upwardly projecting flange 9 which, together with the lower portion of the body of the shield, forms a pocket receiving the lower edge portion of the index card 1.
The shield is provided at its upper edge, in its central portion, with a flange or lock ing tongue 10 which is made to lie in a plane substantially parallel with that of the body portion of the shield. This flange or looking tongue 10, is passed through the slot 7 in the fabric hinge strip 1 and made to overlie the hinged member 3 of the card support. The upper portion of the shield is thus supported by hooking it over the hinged member of the support and at the same time the said shield is utilized to removably connect the index card 1 with the hinged member of the support. If desired, the card 1 may be removed by sliding it out of the shield without removing the latter from the support and may be replaced in reversed position if desired.
Instead of so connecting the shield with the hinged member of the support that it will normally cover the rear face of the card, the connection of the locking flange or tongue 10 with the support may be reversed so that the shield will normally cover the front face of the card, as shown in Figure 4.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. The combination with 'a support in cluding a hinged member, of a shield to cover a face of an index card and having a pocket to receive the lower portion of the card, said shield having a part at its upper edge to hook over the hinged member of the support.
2. The combination with a support comprising a body portion and a member having hinge connection with said body portion, there being a slot substantially in line with said hinge connection, of a shield to In testimony whereof, I have signed this cover a face of an index card and having a specification in the presence of two subscribpocket to receive the lower portion of the ing Witnesses.
card, and a tongue at the upper edge of the shield, said tongue passing through said slot and engaging the hinged member of the support.
