INDEX-CARD.
Speccation 0f Letters Patent. Patented June 28, 1921.
Application led February 1, 1919. Serial No. 274,436.
To @ZZ tti/10m t may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID E. HUNTER, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Muskegon, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Index- Cards, of which the following is a specification. l
My invention relates to index cards and particularly to improved index insert supporting construction for such cards. Index cards usually have an extension or tab at their upper edges and the object of my invention is to provide a strengthening cover for such tabs, such covering being preferably of transparent material and provided with a space or pocket into which may readily be inserted a tablet or strip on which is printed index or other information which Vcan be read through the transparent wall of the pocket.
On the accompanying drawing cards arel shown to which my invention is applied. On this drawing- Figure 1 is an elevational view of an in dex card with one form of index tablet holder applied. f
Fig. 2 shows a section of the card in rear elevation. y
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view on plane 3-3 Fig. 1. c
Fig. 4 is a similar sectional view showing the manner of withdrawing a tablet.
Fig. 5 shows a section of a card with1 a modified form of tablet -holder applied thereto.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of a tablet to be used in the construction of Fig. 5.
On the drawing, 10 represents the index -card which at its upper edge has the extension or tongue 11. A section of this tongue is cut out to leave a rectangular recess, and a piece of transparent material such as celluloid is folded and applied over the recessed portion of the tongue and the adjacent part of the card body to form a pocket 12 and a strengthening Covering 13 for the tab, as well as front and rear sides of the pocket-12, the transparent material being intimately cemented against the front and rear faces of the tongue and card and being cut at its ends to follow the contour of the tongue.
,Ihe rear side ef the covering 13 is eut in blank so that when the covering is applied to .the card, there will be the rectangular open- Ing 14 in its rear wall which opening exposes the section 15 of the index card and also lower part 16 of the pocket 12. This open lower part 16 of the pocket enablesinsertion into the pocket of an index tablet 17, the Celluloid above this open end being sufficiently elastic to yield during insertion of the table. When the tablet has been fully inserted, its lower end will drop into the pocket and its lower edge will abut against the lower edge of the pocket and the celluloid will hold the tablet in this position. To facilitate the withdrawal of the tablet, the notch 18 is provided in the card just below the pocket so that the end of an instrument, such asv the tweezers t may be inserted under the exposed lower end of the tablet and the tablet caught and withdrawn from the pocket as indicated in Fig. 4.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the tablet receiving pocket 75 extends to the upper edge of the tongue 11. In the arrangement of Fig. 5 the pocket 19 is elliptical and is below the upper edge of the tongue in order to leave the abutment section 20 for the elliptical tablet 21 shown 80 in Fig. 6. In the back of the Celluloid covering 22 is cut the crescent shape opening 23, which overlaps the lower end of the pocketV 19 and part of the index card. The celluloid tongue 24 is sutlicientlyexible so that 85 it can be raised a trifle to allow the tablet to be readily slipped into the pocket and below the pocket notch 25 is provided in the card for the insertion of the withdrawing instrument, as the tweezers t.
The covering 13 folded intimately around the card tab edge and cemented to the tab and Cardl surfaces materially strengthens and stiffens these parts and at the same time forms a transparent inclosure for the index tablet, strip or other insert. The covering material is preferablyv a waterproof, transparent material such as Celluloid and can therefore be readily wiped or washed clean to leave the information on the insert at all times fully and clearly visible. I do not desire to be limited to the exact construction and arrangement herein described,.as modiications are no doubt possible which would still come within .the SCOpe of the invention.
I claim as follows: V l An index card having a portion near an edge thereof cut out to leave a recess, transparent material folded around thecard edge A trance slot for the insertion of an index 1Y0 tablet into the pocket, said exposed card seotion below said slot being notched for the e accommodation of an implement for withdrawing the tablet from ,the pocket.
In witness whereof I hereunto subscribe l5 my name this 29 day ofJany., A. D. 17919.
DAVID E. HUNTER.
