UNITED STATES EMANUEL I. CRUM, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
LocK HANDLE.
Application filed December 23, 1921. Serial No. 524,375.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMANUEL L. CRUM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Lock Handle; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
This invention relates to the construction of a handle attachmentfor locks and particularly the type of handles and locks mounted on the doors of motor vehicles.
One feature of the invention consists in the universal joint construction, whereby the securing plate of the handle can be positioned at any angle thereto to conform to the curvature or angle, within certain limits, of the car door. This is desirable to permit the handle assembly to be readily mounted on doors of varying curvatures and angles, and thereby eliminate the necessity of forming the securing plate and the handle in a definite relation to each other as has heretofore been the custom. This universal joint construction also greatly facilitates the mounting thereof upon the door inasmuch as the universal joint will readily compensate for any unevenness or inequalities between the surface of the door and the looking device mounted therein. Heretofore in the usual construction it has been necessary when the handle is mounted upon a door, for the securing plate to be carefully adjusted upon the surface of the door, and upon each mounting thereof to be adjusted so as to lie flush with said surfaces by bending, recessing or spacing, all of which consumes time and often presents considerable difiiculties. With this mounting the plate may be read ily secured upon the surface of the door without adjustment and the handle will seek its own adjustment upon the plate without regard to the position of the locking device within the door.
Another feature of the invention lies in the manner of securing the inner Washer upon the lock actuating bar in the simplest manner, whereby a considerable expense in the operation heretofore employed is saved, thereby decreasing the manufacturing eX- pense of such articles. Heretofore the practice has been to secure a sleeve upon the bar against which the inner Washer abuts, and securing said sleeve in position by a pin or other similar means. Such a construction necessitates double sized holes in the door, one for the bar and a larger one of less depth for the sleeve. By means of this construction the sleeve is entirely elimi' nated, the enlarged hole in the door is made unnecessary, and time and labor saved in securing the sleeve upon the bar and drilling the enlarged recess therefor.
The full nature of this invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the door handle. F 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing a portion of the mounting in cross section. Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing the retaining washer in mounting position. F 5 is a front elevation of the retaining washer.
In the drawings there is shown a portion of the outer panel 10 of a door 11 in which there is mounted a housing 12 containing the locking or latching mechanism therefor. For operating the looking or latching mechanismthere is a door handle 13 having a neck portion 14-. comprising a socket for maintaining said handle upon the actuating bar 15, said actuating bar extending through a suitable opening through the outer panel 10 of the door and into the housing of the locking mechanism for controlling the latching and unlatching of the door in the usual manner. F or maintaining the handle in position there is a securing plate or similar supporting piece 16 adapted to be screwed on to the outer-panel of the door in the usual manner, said plate being provided with a semi-spherical cap 17 adapted to fit in a corresponding recess 18 in the neck 14. Rigidly secured upon the bar 15 there is a similarly curved retaining washer 19 adapted to seat in the cap 17 and bear against the inner surface thereof. The cap 17 is maintained in position against the recess 18 by the retaining washer 19, upon the handle being positioned on the outer end of the bar 15. Said recess 18, cap 17' and retaining washer 19 'are arranged to conform to each other and are provided with the same radial center so as to constitute a universal joint construction. The cap 17 is provided with an enlarged central opening through which the bar 15 extends. The handle 13 and bar 15 may be disposed at various angles to the plate 16, limited only by the diameter of said opening. The outer end of the bar '15 is secured in the central and longitudinal extending opening in the neck 14 by means of a pin 20 or other suit able means, and the retaining washer 19 is rigidly secured upon said bar 15 in a manner which will be hereinafter described. By means of this arrangement the handle and bar are assembled with the plate 16 so as to enable said plate to be moved with re'-- spect thereto to varying angular positions, as shown in 2;
For securing the retaining washer 17 in position upon the bar 15, the sides of said bar are stamped so as to provide arecess 21 and a corresponding burr 22 on each side thereof, as shown in Fig. 4. The re taining washer is so stamped as to provide a sleeve 23 about the central opening 24 therethrough adapted to fit snugly and slide upon said bar until the inner edge of said sleeve comes into engagement with the burr 22. Upon said retaining washer being forced or hammered against said burr, the edges of the sleeve 23 will be bent downwardly into the recess 21, as shown in Fig. 3. By means of this arrangement the assembly is held in position by the burr 22 and the pin 20 without the necessity of securing a retaining sleeve on the bar 15 and thereby eliminating the necessity of providing a recess in the door panel to take care of said sleeve; and also permitting the universal movement of said bar and handle with respect to the surface of the bar and the plate 16.
The invention claimed is:
1. In combination with a door handle having a latch actuating bar adapted to extend through the door to be latched, into I engagement with a latching mechanism, said bar being provided With a recess and burr on the surface thereof, a handle having a neck thereon into which the end of 'curved recess, a washer mounted on said bar for maintaining said piece and handle in assembled position, and a projection upon said washer adapted to engage against the burr upon said bar-and embedded in the recess provided thereon adjacent said burr.
2.111 combination with a door handle having a latch actuating bar adapted to extend through the door to be latched, into engagement with the latching mechanism, a handle adapted to be secured on the end of said bar, said bar having a recess and burr stamped in the surface thereof, a supporting piece for securing said handle and bar on the door, and a retaining washer mounted on said bar adapted to be forced against the burr formed therein for causing its edge to extend into said recess for rigidly securing it thereon.
' 3..In a latch for a door, an actuating bar having a recess and burr stamped therein, a handle adapted to be secured on said bar, means for securing said bar and handle upon the door to be latched, and a retaining washer mountedon said bar having an edge positioned adjacent the surface there of adapted to be forced against said burr and into said recess for rigidly securing it thereon.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature.
EMANUEL L. CRUM.
