UNITED srArss Parser Price.,

HANDLE FOR AUTOMOBILE-309%.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patenten uw. e, ieee.
Application filed May 21, 1920. Serial No. 353,17?.
. and useful Improvements in Handles for Automobile-Doors, of which the following is a specilication.
In the fitting of latches to automobile doors considerable work and time and consequent expense is ordinarily required, due to variations in the angle or form of the exterior face of the door, requiring the faceplate supporting the knob or latch to be adjusted to fit the door surface properly in order that the shank of the operating knob l may aline and be in position to properly Y hereinafter operate with the connecting parts `of the latch.
The object of my said invention is to provide a handle or knob attachment for operating latches of automobile doors, and other doors where similar conditions exist wherein this difficulty is overcome and the parts may be readily fitted without previous ad- `ustment, thus saving considerable time, la-
or and expense in this work, all as will be more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawing,
. which is made a part hereof, and on which Similar reference characters indicate similar parts,
. Figure 1 is a view in section through a portion of an automobile door where the knob is applied, showing the parts to which my said invention relates in central section, and
Fig. 2 a view in perspective showing the face-plate.
In said drawings the portions marked A represent the automobile door, B the latch casing and C the handle or knob for operating the latch.
The door A. is of any approved form or design and requires no special description. The latch easing B is likewise of any approved form, having a latch-part 10 mounted therein for operating in the usual or any approved manner.
The knob or handle @is likewise in the main of any approved design having a shank 11 engaging with the latch-part 10 for operating the same. Said shank 11 is rectangular in cross section and engages a material saving in the time, labor and esimilarly formed aperture in said latchpart 10.
At a point where the shank or hub of the handle C engages with the faceplate it is formed enlarged and has a spherically shaped face 12 surrounding the shank. The face-plate 13 is secured to the face of the door A and has a lange 1e witl Xa concave face formed to correspond and\y fit said spherical face 12 and also to lit within the groove formed by said face and a collar 15, which is formed with a complementary face and secured to the shank by a pin 16.
The engagement thus formed between the shank of the handle C and face plate 13 is, in effect, a ball-andrf'socket joint said handle being permitted a, universal movement 'in relation to the face-plate and allowed to turnfreely for operating the latch in any position or angular alinement allowed by saidxparts and the engagement of shank '11 with the aperture in latch-part 10.
By reason of this arrangement, when assemblin the parte the face-plate 13 and handle are assembled by placing the faceplate 13 in position against face 12 and securing it by the collar 15 and pin N6. The plate is then placed in position on the door and secured by screws 17 without any other adjustment, the shank 11 extending through the aperture in latch part 10, 'thus enabling the workman to fit and assemble these parts with great rapidity, effecting a pense heretofore required to do this` wor The arrangement likewise insuresl a free and easy operation between said parts at all times. l
Having thus fully described my said inlvention what I claim as new and desire tl? secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A knob or latch for automobile doorsl etc., comprising a handle having a spherii` cally-shaped face, a collar mounted on thel handlend provided with a face comple; mentarybdo that of the handle but spaced* therefrom; face plate secured to the door and provided with a flange proportioned to fit closely within the space formed between the handle and the cellar and to permit uni versal movement of the knob.
2. A knob or latch for automobile doors comprising, a shank', a face-plate engaging the face of the door, said knob being formed with" a groove and said face-plate with a 11g los flange engaging therewith, whereby n univei'eail zuljusnieni'; i5 provided within the seid parte: substantially :le set forth.
knob or leteh for automobile doors, ete., comprising :i handle formed with a sphei'iez:ily-shaped fece extending from andy eonipleiely sui'i'olu'nling the hase of e rounded shoulder formed integrally with the handle end extending away from the saine, :i Collar mounted on lie rounded shoulder end provided with face complementary to Llena of the handle hut spaced therefrom, e. 'face plete secured to the door and provided with en upstanding flange latch mechanism.
