DAMPER-CONTROLLING DEVICE FOR STOVES.

' Be it known that I, Lnwrs Moo'nn, a citizen of the United States, residing at J oliet, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful'Improvement in Damper-Controlling Devices for Stoves, of which the following is a specifi cation.
My invention relates in general to gas or like controllable fuel stoves and has for a principal object the provision of an improved arrangement and means of operation of a damper provided in an exit, or outlet passage, from a cooking section such as an oven or broiler, or such sections combined,
in a stove of this character.
To this end, the invention contemplates the provision of means for controlling such a damper in accordance with the supply-of fuel to heat the particular cooking section involved, i. e., an arrangement wherein the damper is automatically opened when the burner is turned on and closed when it is turned off. It will be understood that the purpose of the exit, or outlet passage, referred to is to carry off the ases and products of heat which collect in the oven or broiler and it is, therefore, only necessary or desirable that-the damper be open when the burner is on.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a common outlet passagelfrom both an oven and broiler section in a stove in which these sections are arranged in adjacent relationship with a single damper in said passage whlch may be controlled by operation of the fuel supply valve for either the oven or broiler.
A further object of the invention is the provision of damper controlling mechanism of this character in conjunction with the ,coal section of a combined. gas and coal stove, the passage in which the damper is interposed serving to communicably connect the oven, or other-cooking section, with the ordinarypipe provided for carrying off the smoke, or productsof combustion from the coal fire.
Still another aim of the invention is to provide an improved damper controlling means of this character which may be economically manufactured and applied without adding appreciably to the cost of the stove.-
v Other objects and advantages of the inventlon will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, whlch, taken in connection with the accompanying drawlngs, discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a rear perspective of a stove inwhich my invention is embodied;
Fig. 2 is a front perspective of the upper part of the stove showing the high oven and broiler arrangement;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged partial section taken from front to back through the damper box;.

'Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of the same parts. The stove which is shown upon the drawlngs for the purpose of illustrating a suitable embodiment -of my invention comprises a lower framework 11, in which there is provlded a gas plate 12 and a coal section on the side of the stove indicated by the reference character 13, no parts of this section of the stove, excepting the pipe 14, being shown in detail, since it is not essential to an understanding of the present invention. An oven section 15 and and a broiler section 16 are supported above the lower framework by means of an intermediate supporting frame comprising a back wall 17 and side brackets 18. Gas is supplied to heat the oven and broiler through a pipe 19 branching off from a main supply pipe 21, which also sup.- plles the fuel through a pipe 22 for the gas late 12. Suitable burners are provided 0th for the oven 15 and for the broiler, the
. oven burner comprising perforated pipes 23 and 24 and the burner for the broiler being disposed in the upper part of the section 16 and supplied through a pipe extension 25. The vertical pipe 19 is connected by means of a T connectionv 26 with a horizontal pipe section 27, valves 28 and 29 being provlded for controlling the supply offuel to the oven and broiler, respectively. These valves are operated by means of handles 31 and 32 plied with the usual racks 38 upon which the supporting plates 39 may be positioned .and connectingfrods 33 and 34. The pipe I and the oven is indicator 41.
In the present instance, the top plate 42 of the oven and broiler sections is continuous, and a wall 43 is provided between these sections. In the plate 42 and above the wall 43 is an opening which is indicated in Fig. 4, a portion thereof being over the oven section and a portion above the broiler. A box member 44 is positioned above this opening and secured to the top plate 42 by means of screws 45 extending through projecting cars 46 at th bottom of the box wall 47. The back part of the box member 44 is narrowed, as indicated at 48, to provide .a narrow passage which communicates with the pipe 14, the rear part of said box being provided with a curved flange 49, which is adapted to be secured to the pipe 14 by means of screws, or bolts, 51, the pipe being provided with an opening 52 registering with the passage through the section 48 of the member 44, In said passage, there is positioned a damper member 53, which has dles 31 and 32 are turned to supply fuel to r upper rod projections 54 extending into openings provided in the wall of the passage on one side and in the flange 49 at the opposite side. The damper is held in place by means of a screw 55 extending through a depending projection 56 and adapted to be removed to permit the damper to be taken out. The lower part of said damper normally rests against a bottom section 57, which completes the passage wall and has a flange 58 forming a continuation of the flange 49, said section being securedto the box section 48 by means of screws 59.
For automatically controlling the position of the damper 53, I employ actuating rods 61 and 62, connected respectively by arms 63 and 64 with the connecting rods 33 and 34 by which the valves 28 and 29 are operated. The upper ends of these rods are guided by notches, or recesses, 65 and 66 provided in the bottom section 57 and bear against the face of the damper 53 in such relationship thereto that upward reciprocation of one or both of the rods moves the damper to the positifii indicated by dotted lines in Figure 3.
It will now be seen that when the hanthe burners which they respectively control, the arms 63 and 64 are correspondingly actuated and serve to reciprocate the rods 61 and 62 which actuate the damper 53 in the manner hereinbefore stated. In this manner, an automatic damper controlis provided insuring that the damper will be open when the fuel supply to either the oven or broiler is on and permitted to close when the fuel supply to either of these sections is cut off. Therefore, no particular attention need be paid to the damper, as it will always be in proper position and automatically conprovided with the customary trolled in accordance with the requirements of the oven or broiler condition.
It will be noted that the controlling devices are duplicated so that the damper is operated when either the oven burner or broiler burner valve is turned, thus assuring the opening of the damper when only one of the cooking sections is in operation.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the. parts without departing from the spirt and scope of the invention, or sacrificing all of its material advantages,
the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim: I
1. In a gas or like controllable fuel stove, the combination of adjacent oven and broiler sections having a vertical wall therebetween, burners for heating said sections, valves for controlling the supply of fuel to said burners, exit means disposed above said wall and communicating with both said sections, a damper in said exit, and means operable by turning of said valves for controlling said damper.
2. In a gas or. like controllable fuel stove, the combination of an oven and a broiler arranged in adjacent relationship and having adjoining openings in the tops thereof, an exit providing member disposed above said openings and having a single outlet passage, a damper in said passage, fuel supply controlling means, and movable means actuated by the operation of said fuel supply controlling means for moving said damper to open or closing position, depending upon whether the fuel is turned on or off.
3. In a gas or like controllable fuel stove, the combination of an oven and a broiler arranged in adjacent relationship and having adjoining openings, an exit providing member disposed above said openings and hav' ing a single outlet passage, a damper in said passage, separate fuel supply controlling means for said oven and said broiler, and individual devices associated with each said controlling means for'moving said damper turning of either of said valves for controlling said damper.
