Quite frequently the 'cover for l 'the top burners is lowered to its closed position .when one or more oi the burners are ignited with the result that the cover is seriously injured or destroyed -by the heat from the burners. Further, a top burner valve may be inadvertently Il opened or may be opened by a child when the cover is closed, resulting in igniting of the burner and the accompanying injury tothe cover, or resultingin the escape of unburned gas under the close cover and a possible explosion. y 2li k Another object of this invention is to provide an automatic control for the top burners of a cabinet type cooking stove that prevents ignitingv of the" top burners when the cover is vclosed and that automatically extinguishes the top burners when' the cover is moved to the closed position. 'I'he present invention may be embodied in stoves of various makes and constructions and may be in the form of an attachment for previously constructed stoves. In the following de tailed description we willdescribe a simple, preferredv form of the invention applied to or embodied in .a typical gas range of the cabinet type, it being understood that the invention is 35 not to be construed as limited or restricted to the speciilc form or application of the invention about to be described, but is to be taken as includingy any features that may fall within the scope of the claims. K .-1 '4o The portion of the typical range or.` stove il1us. trated in the drawing includes a rectangular body I0 having an oven compartment Ii, a top burner grill or plate I2, a front panel I3, drawers I4 and a rear guard rail i5 projecting upwardly `along 45 its upper rear edge. - The particular range or stove illustrated in the drawing has four spaced top burners I9 positionedbelow openings 23 in the grill or plate I2.
4Suitable manifoldsor branch pipes 2| extend at the front panel I3 to govern the passage of gas through a pipe 25 which extends to the burner (not shown) of the oven II. Flash tubes 23 radiate outwardly from a pilot burner 21 to the spaced top burners I9 and are operable to conduct gas from the burners I9 to the pilot burner 21 and to conduct the resultant llames back to the top burners I9 to ignite the same. In accordance with the invention a pipe 23 connects the pilot burner 21 with the oven supply pipe 25 lwhereby the burner 21 receives its-gas from the pipe25. A pipe 29 joins the pipe 25 and extends to the oven Il of the stove to supply the pilot burner (not shown) of the Voven with gas. The pilot burner pipes 23 and 29 are connected with the oven supply pipe 25 at points at-the up stream side ofthe .oven control valve 23 so that they are not controlled by the control valve 23. 'I'he header pipe 22 and the oven supply pipe 25 receive their supplies `of gas inthe manner to be hereinafter described.
The stove control or burner control of the present invention includes, generally, a line or pipe 30 for conducting gas to the header pipe 22 of the top burners I9. A main supply pipe 3| furnishing gas to the oven supply pipe 25 and the Pipe 33, a valve 32 controlling the pipe 33 and anoperative connection 33 between the cover I 3 and the valve 32 whereby opening of the cover v I3 opens the valve 32 and closing of the cover I3 closes the valve 32.
The pipe 33 for carrying gas to the header pipe 22 of the top burners I9 may be positioned differently in dinerent stove constructions. In the particular case illustrated in the drawing the pipe 33 is arranged below the grill or plate I2 and extends rearwardly from one end of the pipe -22 in adjacent parallel relation to an end .33 o! the stove body I3. The pipe 33 may be connected with the header pipe 22 by a suitable L yns 35. It is to be noted that the oven supply pipe 23 is connected with the main sup- Ply pipe 3| independently of the pipe 33 so that the control of the pipe 33 by the valve 32 does not aiiect the pilot burner 21 or the burners of the oven.

.nature of a plug valve or stop cock and embodies a projecting turnable stem 33. An operating lever 39 is fixed to the valve stem 33. The connection between the lever 39 and the valve stem 33 is preferably such that the lever may be set in various rotative positions with respect tothe stem 33 and the plug of the lvalve 32. In the arrangement of parts illustrated in the drawing the valve 32iis positioned with its stem 33 projecting laterally or horizontally toward the adjacent side or end 33 of the stove body I0. The valve 32 is preferably such that turning of the lever 39 through an arc of substantially 90, effects opening or closing of the valve, depending upon the direction of turning of the lever.
'I'he operative connection 33 between the valve 32 and the cover I5 is a positive automatic control for the valve whereby lifting of the cover I from its closed position to its open position opens the valve 32 and lowering of the cover I 6 from its vertical open position to its closed position closes the valve 32. The operative connection 33 includes a part connected.k with and movable by the cover I5. In the preferred construction illustrated in the drawing this part is in the nature of a link 43 pivotally connected with the cover I3. A clip or lug 4I is secured yto the cover I3 adjacent one edge to bein substantially the same vertical plane as the lever 39 of the valve 32. The lug II may be secured to the cover I5 by bolts or by welding 32, as illustrated. It is to be understood that if the control of the present 4invention is to be applied to a previously con- I3 and may receive the lug 3| when the cover is inits closed orhorizontal position.
The control or operative connection 33 further includes a pivoted bell crank I5. 'I'he bell crank 35 is supported on a ilxed pivot inadlacent relation to the valve 32. In the construction illustratedvin the drawing a hanger 33 is secured to an adjacent frame member I1 of the stove and has a pivot pin l33 which supports `the bell crank 45. The lower end of the link 33 is pivotally connecte'd with an arm A of the bell crank 3l. The connection between the link 33 and the bell crank arm A is preferably adjustable. In the case illustrated in the drawing a yoke I3 is adJustably threaded on the lower portion of the link 33 and is Dlvoted to the bell crank arm A to connect the link 33 with the bell crank 4l. The bell crank 35 includes a second arm B which is in angular nrelation to the arm A, A link 53 connects the bell crank arm B with the lever 33 of the valve' 32. The link 53 is preferably adiustably connected with the arm B and the valve lever 33. A clevis or'yoke 5I is adiustably threaded on one end of the link 53 and pivotally connects the link with the arm B. A similar clevis or yoke l2.

The above described linkage comprising the link 33. the bell crank I5 and the link 53 connects the cover I3 with the valve lever 39 so that raising of the cover I3 from its closed position to its open position swings the lever 39 to the position 9,175,420 sillustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing where the valve 32 is open and movement of the cover i6 from the open position to the horizontal closed position illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawing moves the valve lever 38 to the position where the valve 32 is4 closed. By adjusting the yoke I5 or by adjusting the yoke 5| or the yoke 52, or both of the latter yokes, the operative connection 33 may be made to close the valve 32 at any stage of downward movement of the cover I8. Thus the control or means 33 may be adjusted to eiect closing of the valve 32 when the,cover I3 is some distance from its horizontal position or when thecover i 6 is adjacent and approaching its closed horizontal position.
It is believed that the operation of the stove control or stove construction provided by the invention will be readily understoodl from the Vforegoing detailed description. Under normal operating conditions the pilot burner 31 as well asthe pilot burner (not shown) of the oven Il may remain ignited at all times. the cover I6 is in its open or vertical position illustrated in Figs. l, 2 and 3 of the drawing the valve 32 is open so that gas is supplied to the valves 23 of the top burners I9. Accordingly, the top burners I9 may be selectively and individually put into use by the valves 23. The burner of the oven I I may, of course, be controlled by the oven control valve 24 in the usual manner. When the top burners I9 are extinguished and no longer required the cover i6 may be swung to its closed substantially horizontal position illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawing. This closing of the cover I3 operates to close the valve 32. It will be apparent that downward movement of the cover i3 is transmitted to the bell crank 4,5 by the link 40 causing turning of the bell crank and the link 53 in turn transmits movement Lfrom the bell crank to the lever 33 of the valve 32 so 4that the valve lever is moved to the position illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawing Vwhen the cover is lowered to its closed position. Having described only a typical preferred form and application of our invention, we do not Wish to be limited or restricted to the specific details herein set fdrth, but wish to reserve to ourselves any variations or modications that may appear to those skilled in the art or fall within the scope of the following claims.
Having described our invention, we claim:
1. In a stove, the combination of, a plurality of burners, a fuel supply pipe manually operable valves controlling the delivery of fuel from said pipe to the individual burners, a valve controlling said pipe and having a turnable control part, a
cover for the burners movable between open and closed positions relative to the burners, and an operative connection between the cover and the saidv valveoperable to open the valve when the.
cover is moved to the open position and operable to closethe valve whenthecover is moved to the closed position, said connection including a pivoted bell crank, a link pivotally connected `with the cover and the bell crank and a link pivotally connected with the bell crank Vand the said con-` trol-part of the valve whereby movement of the cover causes turning of the valve control part.

A-stove comprising, a body, spaced top burners on the body, ai hinged cover on the body' movable between a closed position where it covers the top burners and an open position where the top burners are exposed for use, a fuel supply Pipe, a header pipe in communication with the top burnersa pipe connecting the header pipe with the Asupply pipe, a valve'in'the last named pipe, and a positive operating lever connection between the cover and said valve closing the valve'whenthe cover is closed and. opening the valve when the cover is raised', said connection including, a link connected with the cover, a plvoted bell crank, a connection between said link and the bell crank, a link connected with the valve, and a connection between the last named link and the'r bell crank, at least one of the last named connections being adjustable.
