Patented June 27, 1950 IGNITING SYSTEM William A. Ray, Los Angeles, Calif., assignor to General Controls 00., a corporation Original application November 6. 1940, Serial No. 364,524. Divided and this application April 11, 1944, Serial No. 530,531
6 Claims. 1
This invention relates to gas-igniting systems; the present application being a division of my copending application, Serial No. 364,524, filed November 6, 1940; now Patent No. 2,346,704, issued April 18, 1944.
A main object of the invention is to provide, in a heating device wherein the gas burner is confined by means including a readily-openable closure, means operated by the operation of the closure for igniting the gas at the burner.
Another object is to provide, in a system of the character described in the preceding object, valve means for controlling supply of gas to the burner; and means, also operated by the operation of the closure, for opening the valve means.
Another object is to provide-in a gas range of the type having surface burners, a pilot burner therefor, and a cover which is normally closed when the surface burners are not in usemeans operated by the raising of the cover for supplying gas to the pilot burner and for igniting that gas.
Another object is to provide, in a system of the character described in the preceding object, a magneto operated by the raising of the cover for producing an electric spark at the pilot burner.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be found in the description, the drawing, and the claims; and, for full understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description and accompanying drawing, the single figure of which is a fragmentary side elevation of a gas range, showing a preferred arrangement therewith of the igniting system of the present invention.
In the drawing, the numeral 50 indicates the upper portion of a gas range or cookstove having main surface burners 5| and a pilot burner 52 therefor. A cover 53, hinged to the range, is adapted to be lowered to cover the top of the range when the surface burners are not in use; the cover being shown in the drawing in a position intermediate of its raised and lowered positions.
Secured to the hinged portion of the cover 53 is a curved arm 54 having teeth 55 which, in the movement of the cover, successively engage and disengage the actuating finger 56 of a magneto 51 mounted on the back portion of the range; the finger 56 being spring-biased to the position shown and movable therefrom in either direction. The magneto may be of any suitable well-known type wherein means, such as a permanent magnet, is movable by the actuation of the finger 56 to effect change in the flux passing through a high inductance 0011.
Also connected to the hinged portion of the cover is a pivoted arm 58, the lower end of which is connected to the operating lever of a valve 59 adapted to control passage of gas from a supply 2 pipetll, through a feed pipe 6|, to the pilot burner 52.
When the cover 53 is raised, the valve 59 (closed when the cover is down) is opened; the raising of the cover also effecting operation of the magneto 5'! in the manner described. Each successive impulse of the magneto, resulting from disengagement of its finger 56 from the teeth 55, produces a high-voltage surge which is applied through a cable 62 to a spark electrode 63. insulatingly mounted adjacent the pilot burner, to ignite the gas.
Manual valves 64 control supply of gas to the surface burners 5|, where it is ignited by the flame of the pilot burner.
The embodiment of my invention herein shown and described is obviously susceptible of modification without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I intend therefore to be limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a heating device: a main gas burner, means confining said mainburner and including a readily-openable closure connected to said means, a pilot burner for said main burner, a valve controlling supply of gas to said pilot burner, means operable to ignite the gas at the pilot burner, and means operated by the operation of said closure for opening said valve and for operating said igniting means.
2. In a heating device: a main gas burner, means confining said main burner and including a readily-openable closure connected to said means, a pilot burner for said main burner, a valve controlling supply of gas to said pilot burner, electrical means for igniting the gas at the pilot burner, and means operated by the opening movement of said closure for opening said valve and for operating said igniting means.
3. In a heating device: a gas burner, means confining said burner and including a readilyopenable closure connected to said means, a valve controlling supply of gas to said burner, a magneto for producing a spark at the burner to ignite the gas, and means operated by the opening movement of said closure for opening said valve and for operating said magneto.
4. In a heating device: a main gas burner, means confining said main burner and including a readily-openable closure connected to said means, a pilot burner for said main burner, a valve controlling supply of gas to said pilot burner, a magneto for producing a spark at the pilot burner to ignite the gas, and means operated by the opening movement of said closure for opening said valve and for operating said magneto.
5. In a gas range: a surface burner, a cover for said burner and connected to said range, means operable to produce an electric spark at I the burner to ignite the gas, and means operated by the burner-uncovering movement of said cover for operating said spark-producing means.
6. In a gas range: a main surface burner, a cover for said main surface burner and connected to said range, a pilot burner for said main surface burner, a valve controlling supply of gas to said pilot burner, a magneto for producing a spark at the pilot burner to ignite the gas, and means operated by the burner-uncovering movement of said cover for opening said valve and for operating said magneto.
