My invention relates to lighters, for example, to pocket lighters for cigars or cigarettes, and it is an object of my invention to provide an' improved lighter.
To this end, I provide, in combination with an outer-case, and a gas compartment in the case; a casing which projects into the gas compartment and at its lower end has a tube establishing communication between the compartment and the interiorof the casing. In the lower end of the casing, I insert a body which has a central bore or gas passage. This bore or passage is widened at its lower end and in the widened portion I place a plurality of superimposed porous elements in which the gas from the tube expands and its pressure is reduced. A plugwith a central bore in whose extension a burner pipe is arranged, is screwed into the casing at the upper end thereof and a closing member is arranged between the plug and the body for controlling the opening of the narrower portion of the gas passage in the body. Lastly, I provide means for turning the plug so as to open and close the passage which the closing member controls.
In the accompanying drawing, a lighter embodying my invention is illustrated more or less diagrammatically by way of example.

Referring now to the drawing, I is the case of the lighter, and I is a gas compartment in the case. 20 is a lid closing the case'at its upper end, 23 is a it about its pivot 24, 25 is a bearing for the pivot, 26 is a sparking wheel on the pivot, 21 is a piece of cerium iron housed in a cylinder projecting downwardly from a bracket I b in the case I, and 28 is a spring urging the piece 2'! against the wheel. The lid 20 is normally held in closed position by a hook 2| depending from its lower side and a movable hook I9 which engages the hook 2|. When the hook I 9 is moved away from the hook 2I, as will be described, the spring 23 throws open the lid 20 and at the same time rotates the sparking wheel past the cerium iron so that sparks are emitted to light the gas, as will also be described. 2 is a gas supply tube leading into the showing the imporspring tending to open the lid by turning gas casing 3 and a hollow body 4 arranged in the lower part of the casing 3 and containing a plurality of superposed porous elements 5 which are secured by the screw 6. The gas egress takes place through the outlet I. The from the gas compartment Iinto the tube 2, passes through the porous elements 5 and loses so much pressure in this way that it may flow through the outlet I with a minimum of over atmospheric pressure. The outlet I is closed by a closing member 8 of the inset plug 9 which is screwed by its thread into the casing 3. When the inset plug 9 is raised by its turning movement, the closing member 8 is lifted from the opening I and the gas is enabled to pass through the opening 1 into the lateral channel I0 and from the latter to the gas outlet bore II and to the space of consumption 22. The spring I2 causes the inset plug 9 to turn back into its shutting position. The inset plug 91s integral with a cigarette wheel I4 provided with teeth I5. On the head of the cigarette lighter there is arranged a disk IG'which is provided with a pin II which is adapted to engage between the teeth I5 of the wheel I4. The disk I6 can be turned by a lever I8. The said disk is also connected tothe movable hook I9 already referred to by means of a sleeve I6 mounted to turn in the bracket H The lighter operates as follows:
When the lever I8 is turned, the pin I1 engages with a tooth of thetoothed wheel I4 and the inset plug 9 is turned thereby in the upward direction so that the gas may pass through the bore II to the opening 22. At the same time the lid 20 of the lighter opens as it is no longer kept by the hook I9. Zi'he opening of the lid of the lighter turns the sparking wheel 26 and thereby causes the production of sparks. The gas flowing out from the opening 22 is ignited by the sparks. The quantity of escaping gas increases upon further turning of thelever I8 so that the flame is regulated according to the position of the lever I8. The spring I2 draws the lever l8 into its original shutting position so that, if the lever I8 is released, the gas supply is stopped automatically.
The spring I2 also keeps the closing member 8 on the upper end of the body not escape ifthe lighter is subjected to shock. The flow of gas cannot take place earlier than after the power of said spring has been overcome by the actuation of the lever I 8 and of the pin I1.
I claim:
1. In a lighter, comprising an outer case, a gas compartment in said case, a casing projecting into said compartment, a tube at the lower end gas, which comes 5 4 so that gas will tral bore, a burner tube forming an extension of ,slot in said outer case.

4. In a lighter as specified in claim 1 the operating means, comprising a small toothed wheel fixed on the upper end of the plug, a pin engaging the teeth 0! said wheel to rotate said plug, a

In a lighter as specified in claim 1 the operating means, comprising a small toothed wheel fixed on the upper end of the plug, a pin engaging the teeth oi said wheel to rotate said plug, a disc carrying said pin and a lever rigidly connected with said disc and projecting through a slot in said outer case. said lever adapted to rotate said disc to turn said plug through the intermediary of said pin engaging in said toothed wheel, an automatically opening lid hingedly mounted on said outer case, a catch carried by said disc adapted to maintain said lid in closed position and to disengage from said lid on the rotation of said disc, and a spark producing device being operatively connected to said lid and adapted to be actuated by the opening of said lid to ignite the gas passing out of the burner.
6. In a lighter as specified in claim 1 the operating means, comprising a small toothed wheel fixed on the upper end 0! the plug, a pin engaging the teeth of said wheel to rotate said plug, a disc carrying said pin on a lever rigidly connected with said disc and projecting through a slot in said outer case, said lever adapted to rotate said disc to turn said plug through the intermediary of said pin engaging in said toothed wheel, and a stopping device adapted to arrest said lever in any desired position to regulate the outflow of gas through the burner.
