Description
V which the metal t is being Patented Aug. 4, I 1925.
DAVID T. JONES, OF GARY, INDIANA.
TONGS.
Application filed December 18, 1923. Serial No. 681,386.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID T. Jonas, a citizen of the United States, and resident of. Gary, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tongs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tongs and more particularly to tongs used to handle hot sheets and plates during the rolling operation, and has for its object the provision of means on the tongs for preventing them becoming engaged in the bite ofthe rolls.
In rolling sheets andplates with the tongs commonly used, if the operator fails to disengage the tongs soon enough, they. will enter the bite of the rolls and be pulled through between'the rolls. The rolls have chilled surfaces and the result of rolling the tongs is that generally a piece spalls off the roll surface, thus ruining the roll for future use. In some cases the rolling of the tongs will cause the rolls to break, which of course also ends their usefulness. I
The present invention forms a positive stop for the tongs before they reach the bite of the rolls and, therefore, entirely eliminate the troubles arising from the frequent rolling of the tongs heretofore used.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a tongs embodying my invention and showing their application to a pair of rolls, and
Fig. 2 is a plan of the bit of the tong lever having the stop or nose thereon.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numerals 2 and 3 designate the upper and lower rolls of atinmill, through being supported by my improved tongs, designated generally by the letter A. The
tongs A is composed of the usual tong levers 5 and 6, composed of bit portions 8 and handle or rein portions 9. The levers 5 and 6 are pivotally joined at the junction between bit portions 8 and handle portions 9 by a rivet member 7. V The bit portion 8 of the lever-5, which forms the upper or top bit of the tongs, is provided on its upper or outer face with a stop lug or nose 10 which projects upwardly a sufficient distance-from the bit to engage rolls, comprising a pair passed while the surface of the top roll 2 while the forward ends of the bits 8 are an appreciable distance from the bite of the rolls, thus positively stopping the tongs from advancing into the bite of the rolls.
The stop or nose 10 is shown welded to the tongs as at 11 in the drawings. However, it will be understood that the stop or nose 10 may be made integral with the bit or secured thereto in any desired manner, without departing from the scope of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
The stop or nose 10 is of considerably less width than the bit 8, and is also cut away as at "12 to make-it as light as possible, so as to not interfere with its usefulness.
I claim- 1. A. tongs for holding sheets when passing the sheets through a pair of sheet mill of lever members pivoted together, each of said lever members comprising a relatively broad fiat bit portion and a rein or handle portion, and a relatively narrow nose member projecting upwardly from a point intermediate the longitudinal edges of the bit portion of one of said lever members a sufficient height to engage the upper roll of the sheet mill rolls in advance of the bit portions of the tongs entering the bite of the rolls and thus prevent said tongs' from being engaged in the bite of the rolls.
2. A tongs for holding sheets when passing the sheets througha pair of sheet mill rolls, comprising a pair of lever members. pivoted together, each of said lever members comprising a relatively broad flat bit portion and a rein orhandle portion, and a relatively narrow nose member projecting upwardly from a point intermediate the longitudinal edges of the bit portion of one engage the upper roll of the sheet mill rolls in advance of the bit portions of the tongs entering the bite of the rolls and thus prevent said tongs from being engaged in the bite of the rolls, said nose portion having its my hand.
