This invention relates to a tenter chain link for engaging and directing a web in its desired travel through a machine; and has for its object to provide a plate for the fixed aw 5 of the link which may be readily removed therefrom.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for holding a plate on the fixed jaw without the use of rivets, whereby'when 10 the same is resurfaced by grinding, it may still be retained as securely on the jaw as when first positioned thereon.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a removable plate for the fixed jaw which is frictionally held in position by providing slots in or about the fixed jaw for frictionally receiving portions of the plate.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a construction in which the plate may he slid into position by forcing the same along the surface of the fixed jaw in an arbor press or the like, and which may be removed by being forced in the opposite direction, the same being retained by frictional engagement in working position.
WVith these and other objects and advantageous features in view, the inventionconsists of a novel arrangement of parts more fully disclosed in the detailed description following, in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, and more particularly set forth in the appended claims.

Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmental detail showing a portion of the stock of the overhanging portion as forced into an opening in the plate for additionally securing the same in working position.
It is found in practice that a certain amount of chattering or vibration of the movable jaw occurs in tenter links, especially during the return or inoperative travel of the chain, and that this chattering causes the wearing of a groove in the fixed jaw, which groove is usually removed by grinding to resurface the fixed jaw, bringing the surrounding area of the jaw to the depth of the groove.
Plates of a material harder than the body link are used for covering this fixed aw, which plates are often riveted in place, and when the groove is worn in the plate and the same resurfaced by grinding, theh-eads of the rivets become thinner and corresponding- 1y weakened, and the plate is not as securely held in position; and in order to avoid this riveting and weakening of the rivets, and to provide a construction which is extremely simple in assembly and operation,'I have recessed portions of the jaw and so formed the 7 plate that it will enter these recesses, the sizes of the plate and recesses being such that a forced fitis required, the friction of the walls of the recesses holding the plate in working position: also additional holding means may be provided where desired to assist the frictional holding of the plate in position; and the following is a detailed description of the present embodiment of this invention illustrating the preferred means by which these advantageous results may be accomplished.
With reference to the drawings, 10 designates the body portion of the tenter link having a fixed jaw portion 11 and overhanging portion 12,v upon which overhanging portion there is hingedly mounted the gate or movable jaw 13 with its opening arm 14 projecting upwardlv therefrom. An ear 15 extends from one side of the link to project between a pair of ears 16 and 17 of another link at the other side thereof, the adjacent links receiving pivot pins in the openings 18 to connect the links in the chain.
A work engaging plate 19 covers the working surface of the fixed jaw 11 and with which the movable jaw 13 engages in the absence of the work or web as on the return or inoperative movement of the chain. This engagement is often in the nature of chattering on the plate 19 which in time forms a groove therein which must. be removed by resurfacing. A recess 20 is formed at the juncture .of the overhanging portion 12 with the fixed jaw portion 11 as illustrated in Figures 4 and 5, the same being provided between the brace 21 for the overhanging member and'the iixed jaw and is of a size towreceive and frictionally hold the plate 19 therein. The sides of the fixed jaw are also received as at 22 inwardly from the sides thereof and extending forwardly to the face 23 of the fixed jawfor receiving the inturned port-i0ns24aof the fingers .25, or, the reversely bent portions of the plate to frictionally hold the-Same therein. The fit between the-walls -of the;recesses,-20 and 22:;and the portions .24
and -26-;of theplate are such as to require the -plate;beingforced into-position by an arbor pressby slidingthe plate inwardlyfrom the faceof thefixed jaw-until itsedge is flush with the face 23 thereof.
Openings ;27 .are provided in the-plate in such a position as tobepartially covered by thewall 28 of the recess 20, whereby .a prick punch-or otherupsettingteol may be used to force the stock 29 ofzthe wall 28 into the opening 27 .toadditionallysecure the plate in position. Theamount of stock29 which .i-sforced into. this opening, however, does not require cutting off before'removing the plate from position andmounting a different plate on the jaw, as pressure ,atthe'point 3.0. of the By this construction, .a plate is formed which is seen red in position without a the use of rivets. l Vhile I have describedcertain construction forms which embody the principles of my invention, it is ,obvious that other desired changes in arrangement may be made within the :spiritand the scopeof the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A tenter chain vlink'comprising a body with recesses therein and having a portion providing a fixed jaw, a hingedly mounted gatethereon providing a movable jaw, and a "anopening therein, said-opening being positioned to extend beneath the portion forming the wall of sa1d recess and said portion being upset to extend into said opening.
3. A tenter chain link comprising a body having a portion providing a fixed jaw having recesses. therein, a hingedly. mounted gate thereon providing a .movable jaw, a platein said recesses, said plate having an opening therein inwardly'fromthe periphery thereof, a portion of said body extending over and into said opening to assistin securing the plate in position.

A. tenter chain link comprising a body having a portion providing a fixed aw with front and side walls, said side walls having recesses from its opposite sides inwardly from the front wall thereof and with a portion overhanging the fixed jaw, a movable jaw hinged to said overhanging portion, a plate forming the contact surface of said fixed jaw provided with reversely bent portions to extend along the sides of said body and into said recesses from the front wall of the aw.
9. A tenter chain link comprising a body having a portion providing a fixed aw with front and side walls, said side walls having recesses from its opposite sides inwardly from the front wall thereof and with a portion overhanging the fixed jaw, a movable jaw hinged to said overhanging portion, a plate forming the contact surface of said fixed jaw provided with reversely bent p0rtions to extend along the sides of said body and into said recesses, said plate being slidable into position with the portions entering said recesses from the front wall of the jaw.
