To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ADAM NISBETT and \VILLIAM G. IVES, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rolls for Reducing Old Railway-Rails to Bars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
Our invention relates more particularly to that class of rail-reducing rolls which split the rail into three bars, separating the base and head from the web; and it has for its primary object to reduce a railway-rail to three bars without materially rolling or drawing the metal and without the employment of knifeedges, which are incapable of withstanding the heat and severe usage to which rolls of this character are subjected.
With this end in view our invention consists in certain features of novelty in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts by which the said objects and certain other objects hereinafter appearing are attained, all as fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of the rail before introduced between the'rolls. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the rolls, showing the condition of the rail after the first and second passes; and Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the three bars produced by the second pass.
Our invention is designed more especially for converting or reducing that type of railway-rail which is provided with an extended base or foot flange and a head more or less rounded supported on the foot-flange by a thin Web, and it is the purpose of the rolls to so bend the head and the flange or base as to make the web accessible to two cylindrical portions of the rolls for shearing the web out without forming on either of the rolls a thin knife-edge. In accomplishing this we provide the upper roll 1 with a V shaped groove 2, which is complementary in shape to one side 3 of the rail-base when the rail is turned on its side, as shown in Fig. 1, and this groove 2 is adapted to receive the rail-base portion 3 from its extreme edge to the corner or angle Where it adjoins there the web 4 of the rail, and at a point removed from the groove 2 is formed in the same roll a more rounded or concave groove 5, which roughly approximates the form of the head 6, but is so formed as to avoid the formation of any thin edges, while at the same time affording room for the head 6 to be distorted upwardly and made more rounding in cross-section than originally, thusleaving room between the distorted head and the portion 3 of the base for the introduction of a cylindrical portion '7 of the roll 1, which holds the web 4 down while the head 6 is being distorted upwardly in the manner shown on the left in Fig. 2. On the side of the groove 2 removed from the cylindrical portion 7 the roll 1 is formed with a convex or rounding surface 8, which receives the pressure of the lower portion or opposite side of the base 9 as the same is forced upwardly and outwardly by a concaved surface 10 on the bottom roll 11. This surface 10 is approximately an ogee curve in cross-section, and its upper or inner into line with or into the plane of the web 4.
This operation is for the purpose of preparing the rail for the slitting or shearing rolls, so that the rail may be sheared into three bars without the employmentof knife-edges, which would be short-lived when subjected to the heat and resistance of the rail, and which slitting or shearing rolls will now be described.
14represents the upper one of the shearingrolls, and 15 the lower one. The upper oneis formed at one end with a groove 16 and a convex surface 17, the same in form and size as the groove 2 and surface 8, before described with reference to the roll 1, and which groove 16 and surface 17 are complementary in form and accurately fit the upper side of the base of the rail after passing through the rolls 1 11. The roll 14 is also provided with a cylindrical face or projection 18, which is the same in Width and location as the cylindrical face 7, before described with reference to the roll 1, but which on the roll 14 is considerably extended beyond the edge of the groove 16 and also beyond the edge of a concave surface 19, formed on the roll 15 directly opposite the groove 16 and surface 17, so that the foot or base 3 9 will beheld by the groove 16, surface 17, and concave groove 19, while the web 4 will be depressed and entirely sheared ofi the base by means of the cylindrical surface 18 and an edge 19, formed along the inner side of the concaved surface 19 adjacent to'a cylindrical surface 20, formed on the roll 15 directly opposite the cylindrical surface 18, but of considerably less diameter than the surface 18 and also less than thediameter of the edge 19, so as to leave room for the cylindrical surface 18 to press the web 4 away from the base 3 9. The roll let at the side of the surface 18 opposite that on which the groove 16 is located is provided with a groove 21, which is substantially the same in formation as the groove 5,'already described, in the roll 1, and the roll 15 directly opposite the groove 21 is provided with a groove 22, which is substantially the same in contour as the groove 13 in the roll 11; but by virtue of the cylindrical surface 20 being of a diameter less than the diameter of the inner edge of the groove 22 a second shearing edge 22 is formed along the inner edge of the groove 22 also, and as the cylindrical surface 18 comes down past the edge 22 it shears the upper edge of the web 4 from the head 6 at a point very close to the head, and thus produces a flat rectangular bar of the web, an approximately round bar of the head, and an angle-iron of the base, as clearly shown in Fig. It will also be seen that by turning one side 9 of the base and one side of the head 6 of the rail outwardly away from each other and approximately into line with the side of the web we are enabled to avoid the formation of sharp edges or knifeedges along the inner edges of the grooves 19 22, as would be the case should the rolls be so formed as to shear out the web without thus spreading out the head and foot or base, and it will also be seen that by the described means the desired object is accomplished without materially rolling or drawing the metal.
It will of course be understood that the rolls may be arranged in pairs, one beside the other or in advance of the other, as suits the convenience of the user.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device for converting railway-rails web from the head and base of the rail, substantially as set forth.
2. In a device for converting railway-rails into bars the combination of means for spreading one side of the base and the same side of the head in opposite directions and approximately into line with the same side of the web, rolls having grooves complementary in form to said head and base thus distorted for receiving and holding the same, one of said rolls having the depressed surface 20 arranged between its said grooves to form shearing edges 19 22 and the otherof said rolls having the projecting cylindrical surface 18 formed between its said grooves and protruding into said depression 20 past said edges 15V 22 for shearing the web of the rail from the base and head, substantially as set forth.
In a device for converting railway-rails into bars the combination of means for spreading one side of the base and the same side of the head in opposite directions and approximately into line with the same side of the web, two rolls one of which is provided with a V-shaped groove 16 and a convex surface 17 for receiving one side of the base and a groove 21 for receiving one side of the head and a cylindrical surface 18 between said grooves 16 21, and the other of said rolls having the concave surface or groove 19 complementary in form to the distorted side of the base and the concave surface or groove 22 complementary in form to the distorted side of the head and the cylindrical portion 20 of less diameter than the contiguous edges 19 22 of the grooves 19 22 and past the periphery of said edges the cylindrical portion 18 projects, the width of the portion 18 and distance between the edges 19 22 being approximately the same to form a shear for cutting the web from the head and base, substantially as set forth.
