' HOLDER ron RAZOR BLADES. 3
Application filed 0ctober7, 192i. serial No. 506,110.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX F. Gnnvrivr, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Antonio, in the county of BeXar and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Razor Blades, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to holders, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a novel means for holding safety razor blades, so that the same can be used for other purposes than shaving and so as to permit the ready stropping of theblades if so desired '3 In ordinary practice, safety razor blades 2 after becoming, too dull for shaving'purposes are discarded, thus resulting in a loss and waste. It has been found thatthe blades can be effectively used for, household and shop purposes, when provided with a suitable handle or holder, which will rigidly hold the blade and permit the blade to be swung at variousangles for different purposes. In some instances, it has been found that the razor blades can be used to a great-' er advantage than an ordinary knife.
1 ing drawings,
It is therefore another prime object of-the invention to provide a novel pair of clamping'plates for rigidly holding and bracing the blade and a novel means for permitting the clamping plates to be swung and held at different angles in relation to the operators handle or hand grip.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel safety razor blade holder of the above character, which'will be durable and efficient in use, and one that can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction,
arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanyforming a part of this specification, and in whichdrawing's:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved safety razor blade holder, showing a blade in operative position in the holder.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating the manner of assembling the improved holder.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view through the holder taken on the line 33 of Figure 5 showing a blade in positionin the holder.
Figure 4 is a detail section taken on the 'line 4E-l of Figure 3, showing the inner end of the handle.
Figure'5 is a longitudinal section through the holder, taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 3. r I
Figure 6 is ail-elevation of the outer clamping plate showing the inner face thereof, the adjusting and retaining bolt being shown in cross section. v 7 Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A indicates the clamping portion of the holder, and B the handleL'v The clampingportion A of the handle comprises an outer clamping plate 10, and aninner clamping plate 11. These clamp ing plates 10 and 11 can made out of steel or formed in any other manner, which will pe-rmit'the sameto be placed upon the'market'at a minimum cost. These plates 10 and 11 constitute companion clamping members between which arazor blade 12 is adapted-to be gripped. The razor blade-12 can be of any preferred make. The blade 12 has been shown of that character, which embodies a body 13 and a reinforcing or bracing rib 14:. The plate 10 is of a substantially rectangular configuration and is formed with a plain inner face having a lon- 1 1 of the blade 12. If desirable, the outer face-of the outer plate 10 may be bevelled toward its lower active edge, as is clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawings; 7
The companion inner clamping plate 11 is formed similar to the outer plate 10, and the inner face thereof is alsoprovided with a longitudinally extending groove 15 for the reception of the bracing rib 14 of'the blade 12. The inner face of the clamping plate 11 above the groove 16' may also be grooved or hollowed out as at 17,so as to permit a slight resiliency between the two clamping plates 10 and 11, in order to permit a better clamping action on the blade 12. The outer face of the inner plate 11 isprovided with an annular boss 18, the bore of which is in direct alignment with an opening 19 formed in the companion clamping plate 10. This opening 19 may be formed polygonal shaped in cross section, so that the clamping bolt 20 will be held against turning movement when the clamping nut 21 is threaded thereon. The grooves 155 and 16 formed in the inner faces of the clamping plates 10 and 11 are located a sufficient distance from the active edges of the clamping plates as to permit the sharpened edge of the razor blade to extend'slightly outwardly of the clamping plates, as can be readily seen from Figure 3 of the drawings.
The handle B can be constructed of any preferred material, and of any desired shape, and as shown the same consists of the cylindrical body 25, which can be milled, as at 26 to form a. hand grip. The inner end of the cylindrical body 25 is reduced and flattened to provide the inwardly eX- tending shank 27, which is adapted to abut the inner clamping plate 11. The shank 27 adjacent to its free end is provided with a transverse opening 28, which is adapted to align with the bore of the boss 18, and the inner face of the shank 27 around the open ing, may be serrated or milled, as at 29 for engagement with the serrated face 30 of the boss. This prevents slipping movement between the handle B and the clamping portion A, when the handle B is swung to adjusted position in relation to the clamping portion.
When it is desired to place a blade in the clamping portion A, the plates 10 and 11 are separated, and a blade is placed therebetween, with the rib 14 thereof in the grooves 15 and 16. The adjusting and retaining bolt is then placed through the opening 19 and the boss 18 and the opening 28 in the shank portion 27 of the handle. The handle B is then swung to the desired adjusted angle in relation to the clamping portion A and the nut 21, which has been shown of the wing type, is fitted on the bolt into tight engagement with the handle. This will effectively hold the handle in adj ustecl position on the holder and the clamping plates 10 and 11 into tight clamping engagement with the blade 12. This will rigidly hold the blade and brace the same against breakage. In actual practice, it is not necessary to take the holder apart when a blade is to be removed or placed inthe same, as it is merely necessary to loosen the nut 21 and spread the plates 10 and 11 a sufficient distance to permit a blade to be removed or inserted between these plates.
It is obvious that other means for connecting the companion clamping plates 10 and 11 together and the handle B in adjusted position in relation to the plates can be used, and if desired, one of the plates can be provided with a threaded bore'and simply an adjusting thumb screw utilized in lieu of the adjusting bolt and nut, as shown in the drawings.
In Figure 5 of the drawings is shown several dotted line positions in which the handle can be swung so as to permit the razor blade to be used to the best advantage, and it is obvious that the handle can be swung at any angle in relation to the holder throughout the entire arc of a circle.
From the foregoing description, it can be seen that a holder for razor blades has been provided, of exceptionally simple and durable construction, and which will allow the blades to be used for a number of different purposes and to the best advantage.
Changes in details may be made, without departing from the spirit or scope of this invention; but,
I claim:
1. A holder for that type of razor blade having a reinforcing rib provided at one longitudinal edge thereof, comprising companion inner and outer clamping plates for engaging the opposite sides of the blade throughout the major portion of its body, said plates having longitudinally aligned confronting grooves provided at their inner faces for reception of the reinforcing rib of the razor blade, and one of said plates having a longitudinally extending depression formed at its inner face above said groove, said plates also being provided with the transverse aligned openings disposed above said grooves and intersecting said depression, a handle having a transverse opening provided adjacent one end thereof, and connecting means extending through the openings in said plates and handle for clamping the plates about said blade upon movement of the connecting means to a position for adjustably connecting the handle to the clamping plates.
2. A holder for razor blades comprising a pair of companion clamping plates having transverse. aligned openings therein disposed adjacent one longitudinal edge of the plates, a combined adjusting and clamping bolt snugly extending through said openings and having its threaded shank portion extending laterally past the outer face of one plate, a handle having a flattened shank portion provided with a transverse opening for sliding movement over said extending shank portion of the bolt, and a thumb nut threaded upon said bolt and engaging the shank of said handle for simultaneously drawing said plates toward one another in clamping relation about a blade and adjustably retaining the handle in any desired longitudinal angular relation to the clamping plates.
