TYPEWRITING ll/ALACH.INE..V
Application ledvJuly, 29, 192i. Serial No. 488,302.
To all/Mahomet may concern: Y
Be it knownithat I, JOHN1 WALDHEIM,. a citizen,I of the United States, residing, in Elizabeth, `in the county of Union and State 5s of. New. J'ersey,have\invented certain new. and` useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specication. v
This invention relates to .sound-deadening 1,0n casesor hoods,.and is of the same general type disclosed in my pending application, SerialNo.,466,820, iiled May.; 4,1921 (now PatentNo. 1,519,645, ofDe'cember 16, 1924). The casing comprisesacbody part and a cover or ceilinghingedto said body part. The body part is provided with a large front opening, through whichthe machine maybe inserted into the c asing,.the bank-s of typelreys projecting forwardly from said casing 20., after the machine has been inserted. A.4 plate closes the front opening. Anedge of the cover forms with anedge of the body part aslot at the front, through which the various carriage-operatingy handles, such as y; the, line-space lever, the carriage-return finger-piece, and;the carriage-release lever, ex.- tend. Soundedeadening means in the form of. co-operating strips` or cushions on the. body` part and cover are providedifor. clos- 3.0 ingqthe slot.. The casing isprovided vwith lateral. extensions att the sides, over which thetypewriterfcarriage operates to theright and left, said casing Vthus completely en-v closing the noise-producing parts of. the machine.
The sound-deadening: casing or hood. of
this vinvention is so Vdesigned-that it may be used. in connection, with a. long-carriagek machine. For, this purpose, ,the lateral extensionsprojectL a. considerable distanceV from thef sidesfof the casing 'sofasv to 'allowVv for, the travel of thelong, carriage withinthecas-v ing.4 It isdesirable tohave the lateral-extensions detachably.. mounted on. the casing, sothatuextensions of.4 di'erentf lengths, to accommodate various ylengths of carriages, may` befused: in connection with a mainy or centralportion ot'. the` casing..
Another advantage of. the detachableexf v tensions .is-:thatthey maybe readily, removed for, clearanceV when the machine is'Y mounted upon aswingable base ofa drop-head desk, asthe lateral extension-s ordinarily. project beyondthe side edges offthe. swingable base.
For these purposes, .the casing'comprises a central or` mainsection, said section being substantially` of the same width as themachine andhaving sideopenings to permit. travel of'the typewriter-carriage to the right and. left.. The main section being no Ywider than the` machine, vit is not: necessary to remove it. Jfrom the machine when the latter is lowered to the interior of the desk. When the machine is toibe usedit is raised, together` with the mainicasing applicdfthereto, andv the lateral extensions l'are then mounted, onthe open -sides ,offY the main casing to close these openings-tothe exteriorof the casing while permitting the typewriterfcarriage to operate freelywithinthe extensions. Toenab'leythe, extensions to be readily attached, to or. detached from: the main casing, there is provided simple fasteningandholding means, `which can be easily operated.V y
The lateral extensions arek provided with slot-closing, cushions Which, when the: lateralextensionsare securedto'the hood, form continuations.- of. the slot-closing cushions,- of the central, portiony of the casing.
Other features and, advantages, will hereinafter-appear.l

Figure-4 is a, view similar. toFigure 3, but with the machine, removed, showingthe front, cover-plate of the casing; detached and the coverr of the-casing slightly raised.
InA the, drawings, there is l shown. anL Underwood. standard; typewriting machine comprising aumain frame` l0 l supportedl byfeet. 1 1v upon a base, and providedA with` a foirwardi4 extension 12 in whichl are positionedbankso keys 13,.,saiddr'eys operating tyipeloarsr (not. shown) vto cause types carried by said. type-bars" to printagainst. ai platen 16', j ournaleddnthe end-walls 17 of-a-platen frame 18. Said platen-:ErameI-lforms part of a carriage 20, mounted or-` letterffeeding movementT upon. av front rail 19-and? a rear railQL on the main typewriter-frame. Said platen. mayv be rotated' in either direction by sol finger-wheels 23, iixed upon shaft 24, upon which the platen 16 is mounted, said platen being rotatable also in line-spacing direction by a line-space handleI 25 extending 'forwardly from said carriage. Said carriage is provided with other forwardly-extending operating handles, such as the carriagereturn linger-piece 26 and carriage-release lever 27.
For deadening the sounds arising in the typing operations, there is provided a s ounddeadening casing or hood, comprising a main or central section, indicated generally by the numeral 30 (Figure 1). Said main section comprises a body part 31 and a cover 32, hinged to said body part, said body part being provided with a rear wall 34, short side walls 35, and a front wall in the form of two end portions 36, there being a large space between said end portions to permit the insertion of the machine into the casing. -When the machine has been positioned Within the casing by means of abutments 38 on the rear wall 34, the forward extension 12 extends forwardly from the front of the casing to expose the banks of keys. To close all of the front opening not actually occupied by the forward extension 12, there is provided a front cover-plate 40, provided with turn-buttons 41 operating latches 42 which may be passed through openings 43 in the end portions l36, said openings 43 being similar in shape to latches 42 to permit the passage of said latches therethrough, said latches being turned after passing through said openings to catch behindthe end portions 36 to lock the plate upon said front wall. To releaselthe cover-plate, the latches must be turned until they occupy a position similar to openings 43, so that they may pass therethrough. After the plate has been applied, it will prevent spreading of the end portions since the distance between the latches is constant. The machine is thus enclosed at the front and rear, and partially at the sides by the short walls 35, and, to enclose the machine at the top, there is provided the cover 32, said cover 32 comprising a top wall or ceiling 45, said top wall extending forwardly and downwardly and terminating in a short front wall 44 some distance above the top of front cover-plate 40. To permit the machine, positioned in the interior of the casing, to be viewed, there is provided a transparent plate or window 46 in said ceiling 45. The front wall 44 terminating above the top of cover-plate 40 forms a slot at the front, through which the various carriage-operating levers extend, so that the ordinary typing operations may be carried on without raising the cover or removing the casing.
It will be observed that the main section 30 of the casing is open at the sides, with the exception of the small portion covered by the short side walls 35. To close these passages to the exterior of the casing, and
Yat-the same time provide means which will permit the carriage to travel freely to the right and left, there are provided lateral extensions, indicated by the numerals 50 and 51, said extensions being closed at their outer ends by outer walls 52 and 53, their inner' ends being open. Said inner ends are inserted in the side openings of the main section 30, said main section having outwardlypressed overlapping side edges 54EL and 54 on the body part 31 and cover 32, respectively, to permit the extensions to fit into the main section. The overlapping side edges 54 do not extend around the front of the body part, that is, at the side edges of the end portions 36, said portions 36 being flat, and the front walls 60 of the extensions overlapping said end portions 36 at the front. The front cover-plate 40y is provided with ontwardly-pressed, overlapping portions 62, to overlie the overlapping walls 60 of the lateral extensions, and thus assists in holding the extensions in position. To enable the carriage to operate freely in the lateral extensions, as well as in the main section 30, said extensions are each provided with a slot 65, which slots, when the extensions are mounted on the main section, form continuations of the front slot between the body part and cover of the main section, and in which the various carriage-operating levers may operate. To close all of the slots not actually occupied by the carriage-operating levers, there are provided, in the main section 30, co-operating cushions 66 and 67 and, in the extensions, co-operating cushions 68 and 69, forming, when the extensions are mounted on the main section, continuations of said cushions 66 and 77. The extensions are also provided with windows 71, similar to window 46, and forming continuations of the window 46, to permit the typewritercarriage to be viewed when said carriage extends into said extensions.
To hold the extensions in position within the enlarged portions 54 at the sides of the main casing 30, there may be provided on said enlarged portions releasable locking members, such as spring-detents 80, having locking pins 81, which pass through openings in said enlarged portions 54 and said extensions, and similar locking members 85, mounted at the front on said extensions and passing through openings in said extensions and arms 86 of said end portions 36, said locking members being readily releasable against the action of their springs 83 to permit the extensions to be detached from the main casing 30. To render the locking members ineffective, the pins are withdrawn from the openings, and springs 83 ars swung about their pivots 84 to swing the pins out of alignment with the respective openings.
Thus, ifthe typewriting machine is mounted upon the. swingablebase of a drop-head.
bers, leaving the main casing '30 in position'.
as applied to the machine, said main casing being substantially the same width as the typewriting machine,.so that it may be lowered therewith; When the machine is tobei used, it need-onlyfbe raisedfrom the interior of the desk, and the lateral extensions .50 and5l applied to the side openings ofithe main casing 80 by means ofthe locking members or spring-detents, and the machineY will-be completely enclosedV and ready for use. Since the extensions may be of considerable size, it is desirable to provide them with supports or legs 90, pivotally mounted on the under surface of said extensions for movement to andfrom effective position.
lVth this arrangement it will be readily understood that the central section of thev casingmay be used with a typewriting machine having a short carriagev or with a typewriting machine having a long carriage, and that short or long lateral extensionsr 50, 51` maybe attached to the central section according to the length of carriage in the machine. f
