L. H. GAND. Umbrella-Runners.

WITNESSES: S INVENTOR= UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS H. eANo, OF NEW YoEK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN UMBRELLA-RUNN ERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,753, dated September 8, 1874; application filed I June 24, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS H. GANG, of New York, N. Y., have invented an Umbrella, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to construct an umbrella or parasol runner that will hold the umbrella-frame in a spread or closed posit-ion, by the use of a spring-clasp inclosed within a loose thimble provided with suitable stops and catches for operating the same, en-
abling any one to spread or close it with ease,
. thereby obviating the necessity of impairing cumference of the umbrella-staff, so that it will retain a firm hold upon the staff until relaxed by some mechanical means, for which purpose I have adopted a loose thimble, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, which serves the double purpose of protecting the springclasp and aifording an easy method of relaxing the spring, so it will slide readily on the staff, and which is more fully illustrated by the following description of the drawings:
In the drawings, Fig. 1 represents the runner complete, in which D is a portion of the common slide, with the spiral-spring clasp B and thimble A attached. Fig. 1 represents a portion of the thimble cut away to show the spring within. The thimble is provided with a stop, E, inside the lower end, (represented by the dotted lines,) which catches the lower end of the spring, and by turning the thimble to the left a quarter turn, it will relax the spring so that it can be moved up or down at will.
Fig. 2 in. the drawings represents the spring B attached to the runner with the thimble removed, in order to show the collar 0, over Which the upper end of the thimble may be turned to secure it in place, as represented in Fig. 1, and allow it to turn independent of the collar.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A runner for umbrellas and parasols, consisting of the thimble A, spring B, and slide D, combined and arranged substantially in the manner described and shown, and for the purpose set forth.
