Be it known that I, JOSEPH C. ZINsER, a

citizen of the United States, residing atk are sewed or otherwise secured together in book form.

Another and. further object of my invention is the provision of a book binding device which can be used for the 4purpose of binding different sizes of loose sheets .Without adjustment, or if desired ymay be used .for clamping and holding folios which have been formed from sheets of any desired size.

Another and further object of my invention is the provision of a binding apparatus which is simple and effective in operation and of small cost to manufacture and quick in operation.

These and other objects of my invention will be more fully and better understood by reference tothe accompanying three sheets of drawings and in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved apparatus;

secured thereto at each of its ends and extending vertically therefrom through slots formed in the ends of said board, the thumb nuts 15, l-positioned upon Said bolts for purposes hereinafter described. A jogging board 16 is provided which is secured to the rear of the base block 10 by means of a strap hinge 17, the said jogging board being held in position by means of a hinged bolt' 18 secured to the opposite end of the base block 10 and having a thumb` nut 19 secured in threaded engagement therewith, the jogging board 16 having a recess in the end thereof within which the bolt 18 passes so that when the thumb nut 19 is turned up the jogging board 16 is held in position against the edge of the base block 10 and against the side of the base board 11. An end guide 20 is provided which is secured to the base board 11 by being glued thereto, or in any other approved manner, the said end guide 20 being braced by a block 22, which is also secured to the base board 11 by screws or by being glued thereto. The end guide 2O and theA jogging board 16 perform the function of guide members against which the sheets making up the book are placed in order to properly align each of them in position. A top clamping board 23 is provided with an extension 24 at one of its ends within which a recess 25 is provided with a corresponding recess 26 at its opposite end, Within which the hinged clamping bolts 13 and 14 extend respectively, the said bolts being fastened at their opposite ends to the base board 11. The top board 23 serves to cla-mp the sheets making up the book 27 which is placed be-4 tween the base board 11 and the top board 23, the rear portion thereof being clamped between these two members by means o-f the bolts 13 and 14. Secured to the rear mar ginal edge of the member 23 by means of a pair of hinges 28, 28 vis a top drill guide 29, the said drill guide having a longitudinally extending slot 30 therein with a liller strip 31 extending along the marginal edge of the member 23 and passing'under the hinges 28, the said top drill guide 29 having a drill guide filler 32 secured thereto on its underside by means of bolts 33, 33, the said drill guide .filler 32 being lpositioned alongside the rear edge of the top clamping board 23 and adjacent the'joggmg board 16. The said drill guide strip 32 has a plurality of spaced holes 34 therein through which a drill or awl is used to form holes in the book 27 so that the sheets can be sewed together as will be more fully described hereinafter. A second drill guide member 35 is secured to the lower rear marginal edge of' the member 23 in any approved manner and is in alinement with the top member 29, and with a second member 36 secured to the upper rear marginal edge of the board 11, each of these members extending rearwardly there- :trom against the jogging board 16.

In operation, the device is exceedingly simple in that the pages or folios making up a book are placed one upon each other upon the base board 11 with their rear edges abutting against the jogging board 16 and the adjacent end edges against the end guide board 20, and. this operation is continued until the requisite number or' ages have been provided whereupon the topi Ecard 23 is placed along the rear edge oi the sheets with the recesses 25 and 26 in alinement with the bolts 13 and 14 whereby these bolts are placed in position in the recesses 25 and 26 thus clamping the top board 23 down upon the book 27, and the thumb nuts 15, 15 turned down until the requisite tightness has been acquired. The drill guide member 29 is in position withthe holes 34 in proper spaced relation whereupon holes 37 are punched or drilled through the book 27 and when this operation is complete the drill guide member 29 with the guide strip 32 attached thereto is'turned back upon the member 23 and the book including the lower base board 11 and the upper clamping board 23 is turned upon the hinges ,12 until the book stands in a vertical position, the jogging board 16 in the meantime having been loosened and allowed to swing free as shown in the dotted line position of Figure 6. The book is thereupon stitched through the holes 37, 37 which have been provided through the rear portion of the book by means of drills or an awl in register with the holes 34 and when the sewing operation is complete the top clamping board 23 is removed and the bound book removed from between the boards.

While l have described more or less precisely the details of construction, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I contemplate changes in form and the proportion of parts and the substitution of equivalents as circumstances may suggest or render expedient without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention.

I claim:

1. In combination, a base plate, a lowery clamping board hingedly secured to said base plate, an upper clamping board, guiding members extending along the marginal edges of each of said clamping members, and' clamping means adapted to secure the upper and lower clamping boards upon a book.

2. In a book binding apparatus comprisling in combination a base, a lower clamping board hingedly secured to said* base, an upper clamping board, bolts secured to said lower clamping member adapted to engage the said upper member, and a plurality of guiding membersextending along the marginal edges of vsaid upper and lower clamping boards.

3. In combination, a base, a lower clamping board hingedly secured to said base, an upper clamping member, a drill guide secured to said upper clamping member, and a rear jogging board hingedly-secured to said base and adapted to be clamped against the edges of said clamping board.

4. In combination, a base, a lower clamping board hingedly secured to said basc an upper clamping member, a drill guide hingedly secured tosaid upper clamping member, and a jogging board hingedly secured to said base and adapted to4 be clamped against the edges of said clamping board.
