Fig. 7.
.n :npnbil ENT' minion le' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,656., dated September 1,1874; application iled .my '23, ism.
To all whom; it may concern e ne if; known anni, Amitie. EDWARDS, of Lynn, of the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in' Burial-Cases; and do hereby declare the-same to be fullydescribed 'fand Fig, 6 a transverse and central section, of
1t, as open.
l Fig; 7 is a transverse section of itvtaken. between' one end of its tray, and the next adjacent end of the case.`
My invention consists ot' a burialcaslret y having two hmgedend covers and a box provided with a tray and two quadrantal oir-side covers, thesaid end covers, and the box, be' lng provided with devicesfor sustaining `the f end covers in horizontal positions, when in such, all bein g as hereinafter explained.
I am aware that a burial-case having;` a tray or box, 'andl two curved movable tops7 constitutes the subject oi' the United States Fat- Vent No. 139,465,1)nt in this case the movable "ends are quadrantal, and fixed tov and ti'irn "with the covers, Whereas in my casket the end covers are semicircular, and are separate from the top cove s, 'and are hinged to the body or box, so as to be'capable of' being turned from vertical down to horizontal positions, orvice versa, the curved .top or side coversbeing xed to the body or box by arms pivoted thereto, vthewhole being productive ol'advantage, as hereinafter' set forth.
In such drawings, A denotes the tray for receiving the corpse, such tray when duly -prepared being upholsteredand properly. cushioned. 1t is arranged vwithina boxI or Ycase,B, the tivo being-4 connected at their ends with Spaces() C' between such ends' andren theianks of theconnections m m. There is also between thesides of the tray andthose ofthe case aispace for reception of twocinved covers, Dld), arranged as shown. Each of these covers hasltwo radial arms, E Enextended from its ends, such arms at their iiiiner ends working on lcenters or joint pinsl t u., i vbien, withthe arms, are disposed within the spaces i covers, it being shownV at I. 4
cover Yandthe next adjacent end cover are 1n. .their highest positions, the said bolt I, 'being G C, the Wnoie being so that the covers may either be turned down into thepositions shown in Figs. et and 6, or raised up into those de noted in Figs. 1 and 2. There are hinged to theends of the caseB two semicircular 'end caps or covers, F F, their hinges being shown at b b, and so arranged as to admit of the covers being turned from the positions shown in Figs. 4 and 5 up into vertical positions, so as to be directly over the ends of the case, each cover F being provided with aiange or lip, c, projectingl from itat its periphery, in manner as shown. These lips overlap the side covers' D -fD at their ends when all the covers are raised to their highest positions, the covers F F, under such circumstances, serving to close the openings at the ends 'of the covers .D D.
Plates G V(i, in the form of parallelograins.
and arranged -in like formed recesses in the upper edges of the ends-of the case,.and to turn on pivots d d, serve when the said cov ers F F are raised up intoliorizontal positions to' hold them ltherein, by being turned around underneath them. j
rlhe object of so'raising the covers F F, and supporting them in horizontal positionss to admit ot' their being' used as means for snstaining vases, wreaths, cr bouquets of flowers dmingpfuneral services over a corl'isewhenn the tray.
ln each end cover I arrange, asshown, a slide-bolt, H, which, when the end cover is in its 'highest position, is to be pushed down into a hole, 11 in the end of the case, in'orderthat the bolt and the hole may hold the end cover in its elevated position.
There is also such a bolt in one of the side Nhen the said slid forward into a recess, fi, in .the end cover, will serve to holdup the side cover. Afhook,
f k, applied to the other side cover, and hooked upon or intoa stud, l, applied to itsfellow cover, as shown, will,.when the two side covers are raised, hold the first one lin its elevatedA position.- y
W ith a burialicase so made, acorpse may be either 'fully exposed to view, or entirely incased so as not to be visible.
As the oase, lwhen open, is in height only abouthalf that ot' an ordinary Collin oreaisket, together, as set forth, in combination with the it will be seen that it een be boxed and trans semieireular end covers F F, hinged to the ported from where mede t the place of use, box B, all being -to opera-te substantially in or that of sale, at much less yexpense than vmanner as specified. such coffin or casket,
