Be it known that we, GARDEN L. Gnu-EN and WVILLIAM W I'IINES, citizens of the United States, 'a'nd residents of Tulsa in the county of Tulsa and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Bailers, of which the following is a specification.
In the drilling of an oil or gas well, it is frequently necessary to introduce water into the bottom of the hole because the hole dry and the water is used for the purpose of mixing or flux-ing with the c'utti ngs so that the drill bits will more eificiently cut the formation and so that the cuttings may be efiiciently introdi'iced into the b'ailer and sub sequently withdrawn from the hole.
Frequently when a bailer full of water is introduced into the well it will encounter soft earth or mud and thedart ot the bailer will sink into the soft earth or mud and consequently the valve of the "bailer will reinain seated. When the valve is thus allowed to remain seated water contained in the b'ailer is not discharged and the drilling operation is greatly retarded.- A
Therefore, an important object of this invention is to provide a bailer having means whereby the valve may be positively unseated when the ba-iler loaded with water reaches the bottom of the well so that the water may be eflici'ently discharged.
A further object of the inventionis to provide a bailer having a valve operating means which will not in any way interfere with the use of the bailer for withdrawing cuttings and the like from the well. A further object is to provide a bailcr which is othighly simplified construction, simple in use and cheap to manufacture.

In thedrawing wherein for the'purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral 5 desi nates a tubular body of a bailer, which body is provided at itstorward end with the usual annular valve seat 6. The valve seat 6 is engaged by a semi-spherical valve. 7 having a stem 8 to which a contact plate 0 inember 9 is connected. As in the case of the bailersnow in use the engageinent of the contact meinber 9 with the bottom of thewell unseats the valve 7 so thatthe cuttingsand the 7 like, may freely enter thejtubular body 5 for subsequent withdrawal from the well. Of course when the valve is'unseat'ed as illustrated in Figure 2 the forward end of the bailer rests upon the shoulders 10. In carrying out the invention the rear portion of the tubular body 5 is provided with a yoke 12 throughj whijchj a plunger or rod 14- is extended. Figure 1 illustrates that the rear portion o'fthe plunger or rod 14 is enlarged as indicated at 15 and is provided with an opening for the reception of the lowerend ofa line or lowering'nie'ans 17 The enlargedend or head '15 p'rovides a conengaged with the bailer in case the line 17 is broken. i p
In the use ofthe device for; withdrawing material from well the plunger'is connected to a cross i'i'iein'ber 20 by means of pin 21 and a latch 22. The latch 22 is extended through a slot 24: in the plunger 14k and as the. plunger 14: has connec tion with the'lowe'ring line 17 the weight of the bailer will be borne by the latch 22 and the latch will ibe eng'aged with the bottom oft-he slot 24.. When it is desired todunip a qiiantity of .bel-oosened somewhat whereby the plunger 14 may descend slightly. Then the plunger 14 thus descends the top wall of the slot 24 will swing the latch on its pivot 22 and thereby release the latchfrom engagement with the plunger. The plunger or rod 14 may now be elevated thru the line 17 and the chain or other flexible element connecting the latch 22 and the pin 21are again connected to the rod 14 so as to hold the rod against longitudinal movement with relation to the tubular body.
A slightly modified form of invention is illustrated in Figure 3 wherein it shows that the rod 40 may be provided at its forward end with a loop or'jar 42 with which asecond jaw or loop 43 is interlocked. The
forward portion of the jaw 43 is connected to a rigid link 46 which is in turn connected to the rearend of the valve through the medium of an attaching loop 48. In this case also the rod 40 may be detachably connected to the tubular body and held against movement with relation to the same and of course the rod is caused to support the weight of the bailer through the medium of the latch 22. Of course in carrying out this form ofthe invention thejars will be so proportioned that sufiicient slack is provided to allow the rod to be positively disconnected from the latchwhen the rod is released. V
Vv ith reference to the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that a bailer constructed in accordance with this invention is provided with simple and reliable means whereby the water may be reliably discharged at the bottom of the well and during the ordinary use of the bailer the rod 14 and associated elements do not in any way interfere with the filling of the and having a'dart, a rod extending into the tubularbody and having a limited sliding connection with the valve, and a latch connectiug the body to the rod, said rod having its upper portion provided with means adapting the same for connection with the lowering lines'of the bailer.

A bailer for wells comprising a body adapted for thereception of-water and pro vided with a valve seat, a valve associated with the valve seat, a rod slidable into the tubular body, means flexibly connecting the rod to the valve for unseating the valve when the rod is moved rearwardly, said rod being provided with a slot, a latch pivoted to the body and received in said slot, and a pin cooperating with the latch in holding the rod against longitudinal movement with relation to the body.
4. A bailer for wells comprisinga tubular body having its forward end provided with a valve seat and its rear end provided with a yoke, a'rod slidable through said yoke.
and having a slot, a latchpivoted to said yoke and received in said slot whereby the weight of the baileris transmitted to the rod, a valve associated with said valve seat, and means providing a loose-jointed connection between-the rod and the valve.

A bailer for wells'comprising a tubular body, having its forward end provided with a valve seat and its rear end'provided with a yoke, a rod slidable through said yoke and having a slot, a latch pivoted to said yoke and received in said slot whereby thelweightof the bailer is transmitted to the rod,a valve associated with said valve seat,
means providing a loose-jointed connection between the rod and the valve, and a pin extending through said rod and cooperating with the latch in holding the rod against longitudinal movement with relation 'to the tubular body. p

A bailer for wells comprisinga body having a valve seat and a yoke, a rod slidable through said yoke and having a slot, a latch pivoted to said yoke and received in said slot whereby the weight of the bailer is transmitted to the rod, a valve associated with said valve seat, means providing'a loose-jointed connection between the rod and the valve, the rear portion of the rod being provided with a head by means of which the rod. may be connected to a loweringline.
7. A;,bailer comprising a tubular body having a yoke, a cross piece carried by the yoke, a rod slidable through thecross piece and having a slot, a latch pivoted to the cross piece and received in saidslot, a pin extending through said rod adjacent said cross piece and cooperating with said latch in holding the rod against extensive longitudinal movement with relation to the tubular body, a valve seat carried by the forward end of the tubular body, a valve coopcrating with said valve seat, and a chain providing a connection between the valve and the rod.
8. A bailer for wells comprising a body, a valve carried by the body, a bailer supporting rod having a loose jointed connection with said valve, and a latch connecting the rod to the body, said bailer supporting rod having its upper portion provided with means adapting the same for connection 7 with the lowering lines of the bailer.

A device of the character described comprising an elongated receptacle pro vided at its top with a bail having a hole, and having its bottom formed with an opening, a valve member including a head and a dart connected by a neck portion slidable through said opening, said head being within the receptacle and the dart being therebelow, a plunger slidable through the hole in the bail and provided with suspension means and a slot, a connection between said plunger and said valve member, and a trigger operable within said slot and disposable transversely of the plunger to engage and support the receptacle.

A device of the character described comprising an elongated receptacle provided at its top with a bail having a hole, and having its bottom formed with an opening, the valve member including a head and a dart connected by a neck portion slidable through said opening, said head being within the receptacle and the dart being therebelow, a plunger slidable through the hole in the bail and provided with suspension means and a slot, a connect-ion between said plunger and said valve member, and a trigger operable within said slot and disposable transversely of the plunger to engage and support the receptacle, the trigger consisting of an elongated bar pivoted at a point spaced from its center whereby the trigger will naturally tend to depend in vertical-- position, said dart being engageable with the bottom of the receptacle to prevent comprising an elongated receptacle having its top open and provided with a bail having a hole therein, the bottom of the recep- V tacle being formed with an opening, a valve member above said opening having a neck portion slidable 'therethrough, a plunger slidable through the hole in the bail and equipped with suspension means, a flexible member connected with the plunger and said valve member, said plunger being formed with a slot, and a trigger pivoted eccentrically and capable selectively of ex tending transversely in engagement with the lower side of the bail to prevent upward movement of the plunger with respect to the bail or being disengageable from the bail to permit the plunger to move upwardly relatively thereto,

In a device of the character described, a receptacle havingan open top and having its bottom formed with a valve seat, a valve co-operating with said seat and having an extension projecting therethrough, a support at the top of the receptacle, a plunger slidable through said support and equipped with suspension means, a trigger co-operating with the support and with the plunger for holding the plunger against upward movement, and a flexible connection between the plunger and the valve.
13. In a device of the character described,
an open topped receptacle provided in its bottom with a valve seat, a valve within the receptacle co-operating with said seat and having an extension projecting beyond the seat, a support at the top of the receptacle, a plunger slidable through'the support and flexibly connected with the valve, and
trigger for normally preventing upward shding movement of the plunger, and means whereby the trigger will be released upon" downward movement of the plunger.
