URBAN MONG, OF TIONESTA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SAND-BAILER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug'. 6, 1907.
Application filed November 27, 1906. Serial No. 345,334.
To all whom it may concern:
'Be it known that I, URBAN MONG,'a citizen of the United States, residing at Tionesta, in the county of Forest and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sand-Bailers7 of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a bailer for removing sand7 mud, and (billings from oil-wells, and it consists in a construction and arrangement of parts having for its object to facilitate the discharge of the contents of the bailer.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the valve.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes the bailer-tube orcasing having at its upper end the usual bail 6 to which the hoisting rope is fastened. The bottom of the tube comprises a block 7 having an opening 8 provided with a valve-seat 9 for the valve 10. The valve 10 comprises a ball 11 having a depending stem 12 which extends through the opening 8 and below the bottom of the block 7. The stem 12 is formed at its lower end with laterally extending arms 14, which7 when the valve is lifted off its seat, engage the bottom of the block 7 and prevent the valve from being pushed up too high. A further object of the stem 12 is to raise the valve off its seat. When the stem strikes the bot tom of the well7 the valve is raised from its seat which permits sand, mud, and drillings to enter the bailertube. The bailer is emptied by placing it on the ground or on a dump-block so that the valve is raised from its seat, whereupon the stuff is discharged through the opening 8. The stem 12 is made sufficiently small so as not to obstruct the Opening 8 and prevent the free flow of the stuff therethrough.
At 15 is indicated a stem which rises from the top of the valve and extends inside the bailer-tube. The stem is formed with an opening 1G which extends lengthwise from the top thereof and into the ball 11 where it meets an opening 17 extending transversely through the ball to the surface thereof.
Upon emptying a bailer, it frequently happens that the contents thereof become clogged which makes it necessary to turn the bailer upside down to empty it. The object of the invention is to avoid this7 which is accomplished by forming the valve with the openings 1G and 17 herein described. These openings permit the water to fiow therethrough and wash off the sand and mud sticking to the valve whereby clogging of the bailer is effectively prevented.
Having thus described my invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent isl. A bailer comprising a tube, and a valve for closing the lower end thereof, said valve having an opening extending therethrough from the top to its sides.
2. A bailer comprising a tube, a valve for closing the lower end thereof, and a stem rising from the valve and extending into the tube, said stem and valve having openings extending respectively lengthwise through the stem from the top thereof and laterally through the valvehody to the sides thereof.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
URBAN MONG.
