COMBINATION WAEELE sTOvE'ANn GAs PLATE.
VApplication led July 18,
the following isa specification.
AThis invention relates to stovesl and re-` lates particularly ,to an improvement in waffle stoves having features which Venable the use of the stove as a gas plate, and ease of cleaning the parts thereof. '1
It is an object of the invention to provide a waffle stove having a waliie iron basewhich may be readily removed so as to permit the cleaning of the stove burner and adjacent parts, this wale iron base being provided with engagement means for engaging the sub-structure in such a manner that the waffle iron base constitutes a rigidlyV secured part of the stove which is held in place without the use of screws or bolts and may be readily removed for the purpose of clean' ing. The structure of the stove is such that when the walileiron'base is remo-ved, the sub-structure vmay be employed as a gas plate upon which the ordinary cooking utensils `may be placed. v
The especial advantages of the invention and further objects thereof will be made evident hereinafter. j j
Referring to the drawing which is for illustrative purposes only: f y
Fig. 1 is a vertical cross section through a wale stove embodying the features of my invention. 1
Fig. 2 is a section taken on a plane represented by the line 2-2 of Fig; 1.
In the form of my invention shown in 'they drawing, a sub-structure 11 is provided which supports a waffle iron base 12 in which a wale iron 13 is operatively held. The sub-structure 11 is formed of longitudinal channels 15 and 16 which are disposed with the legs 17 thereof inwardly directed, and which have supporting legs 18 extending downwardly therefrom. The legs 18 are formed of angle members preferably formed from metal plates stamped or bent to provide perpendicularly extending webs 19. Supported upon the channels is a grid or grate 20 having a central opening 21 therein in the form of a multi-pointed star fig- 1923. Serial N0. 652,288.
ure, the points 22 of which are separated cal wall 29' having a socket 30- formed at the upper end thereof for receiving the ball hinge 31 ofthe waffley iron 13, this vertical wall merging with the sloping wall of the shell 27 as indicated at 33. The lower edge 28 yof thebase 12 is of greater diameter than the distance across the star 21, and when the waffle iron is placed inoperative position upon the grate 20, the edge 28 rests outside the points 25 of the star 21, so that all heat passing therethrough from the burner 35 is directed into the interior of the shell, and is therefore applied to the walle iron 13, consequently preventing the wasting of heat upwardly around the Outside of the watlle iron base.
For the purpose of removably securing the waflle iron base 12 upon the grate 20, engagement members' 36-andV 37 are provided.- The engagement member 36 provides an inwardly projecting portion 38 from which there downwardly extends a leg 39. By forming the downwardly extending leg 39 at the inner end of the projecting portion 38, it is possible to bring this leg in a position within the diameter of the.
lower edge 28 of thebase 12 so that it will project downwardly into the forward point 22 ofthe star opening.` The rearward engagement ,member provides an inwardly extending leg 40, which projectsv inwardly from the shell 27, a downwardly extending web portion 41, and an outwardly extending leg 42, thus providing a U shaped hook, having the upper leg thereof integrally formed with the shell 27. The web 41, being disposed at the inner end of the leg 40, will project downwardly in the rearward star point 22, thus enabling the lower leg 42 to extend rearwardly under the grate 20. The base 12 when placed as shown in the drawing, forms a part of the waffle stove.
and ssulrly held in Pleeeganst lnovef ment due to side Ypressure uponthe handles 49 of the waffle iron, which side pressure` is generally exerted-*when the waflie iron: is being turned over and. has a-tendency to displace the waie iron base 12. The only way in which the base, can; be removed is by first liftinvf the forward end of the base so that the leg 39 will be raisedy outof' engagement with the grate opening, and then pulling the base 12''for'w`ardly` to d-isengage the, hook shaped member 37, whereupon the base may be lifted' from the grate. Thus itl will be' evident-that oney of the `functions of the 'hook projection is to prevent vertical displacement'of the rear portion off the base 27, it being pointed: out that if 'saidprojection were sinjiilarY to the projection 86 y instead of' havingl a hook `engagement beneath the grid 20, an excessive downward and forwardg' pressure upon the' `waffle iron handles` 49v wouldfcause the base to be tilted, th'e forward lower edgefofl the base acting as the fulcri'im andthe rear position off'th'e` base swinging upwardly. This would alsov be liable to'take place if the `wallie iron were, by accident, dropped while being manipulated, thus causing the-base to jump outf'of4v its f proper engagement. with the grid.' When' the base is thus removed, the stove may be easilycleaned,y as will be readily recognized, and the subfstr-ucture 11 then has the form of a gas plateJ and maybe used as such owing.y to the rigid 'construction otz the;radially extending arms 23 and the supporting- 'struci ture which; are capablel ofsupporting' theweightof heavy placed thereupon. V Y
In the drawing, a single unit oiia waiile stoveis--shown-; butv it will be readily recognized that abattery of these stovesmay be integrally constructed by placingthe gratos 20 in consecutive arrangement a'sindicatedf at 50, the anglemembers 15 and 16 being likewise extended'to support the consecutive grate members. The burner 35 in accord'- ance with the standard construction isv provided with an air mixer 52 at the-'forward end thereot and is 'fed with gasfrom a gas.
