Description

PLMUO'NEY. I
Safety-Valves.
N0.|5 4,509. Patente d Aug. 25,1874.
WITNESSES INVBNTOR I I Attorneys UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
PATRICK MOONEY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY-VALVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,509, dated August 25, 1874; application filed July 25, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PATRICK MOONEY, of
Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Safety-Valves; and I the same.
This invention has relation to safety-valves for steam-boilers; and my object is to improve the safety-valve described in the Letters Patent to George W. Richardson, dated September 25, 1866, by attaching the lipped portion of the valve to the body thereof by means of a screw and a check-nut, whereby the said'lip can be varied to allow for wear on the seat, so that the engine can quickly release herself Without materially reducing pressure. 1
In the annexed drawings 1 have represented a valve, which, in general appearance, resembles the valve of Richardson above referred to. A designates the adjustable lipped por- Fig. 2is a tion of the valve, which has on its under side an annular cavity, 12, and which is screwtapped centrally to receive the threaded portion g. This lipped portion is also constructed with a nut, a, on its upper side, on which bears a check-nut, 0, applied on the screw-stem g, for the purpose of holding the portion Aiu the adjusted position. Inside of the groove 1) is a circular recess, which is designed to receive the cylindrical portion of the valve B. This valve B is constructed with the usual notches t and feathers B.
It will be seen from the above description that the lipped portion A is adjustable on the body of the valve, and may be varied to allow for wear on the valve-seat.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The adjustable lipped portion A, with annular cavity 1) on its under side, and constructed with a nut, a, in combination with the screw-stem g and check-nut O, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
PATRICK MOONEY.
