UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MGHENEY, OE CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE GAS-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,505, dated August 25, 1874 application filed July 24, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN MGHENRY, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Portable Gas-Holder, of which the following` is a specification:
My invention is especially designed as an improvement inthe class of oating gas-holders employed in hydrocarbureting apparatus, a class of holders in which easy package and shipment, facility of erection or dismemberment, and economy of room are importantY desideratums.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a perspective view, representing my gas-holder in position within the tank. Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views of parts of my holder to Fig. 4 shows two of my component plates detached.
My holder is composed wholly of separable plates A, one or more of whose edges are turned or upset so as to constitute a ilange or flanges, B, at suitable angles with the planes of their respective sheets. I also provide L angle-irons C, which, with the flanges aforesaid, are punched or otherwise perforated, D, to receive screw-bolts E, having nuts F. G are gaskets of tar-board, painted canvas, Yor other suitable material. El represents a tank or cistern of corresponding rectangular or other form to that of the holder. From the top of this tank the customary inclosing building may be erected without the expense of a separate foundation-wall and Without waste of room. 'lhe tank is made so much larger The upper extremities of these columns may be stayed by means of rods K. The columns I' may be of gasp-pipe or other tubular form. While intended generally to be of rectangular plan, as here illustrated, my holder may, nevertheless, be of octagonal, of circular, or other desired form.
It is manifest that the parts of my holder may be all prepared in the shop, and being numbered, may be nested together so as to occupy very little space, and may be shipped or transported to any distance, and erected in its proper place, by simply screwing together, without the necessity of employing a professional sheet-iron worker at the place of erection; and should it be desired to remove the holder, it can, at any moment, be taken apart by any one, by simply unserewing the bolts.
Should the holder leak at any joint, it will suffice to merely screw the bolts a little tighter at the point of leakage.
It will be seen that the conjoined anges and angle-irons constitute, in eifect, a congeries of ribs, which operate to stifen the holder and preserve its form intact.
I claim as new and of my invention- The gas -holder, of rectangular or other form, composed of the separate flanged plates A B, angle-irons C, screw-bolts E F, and gaskets G, so constructed and arranged as to be readily put together and taken apart, as and for the purposes set forth. Y
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
JOHN MCHENRY. Attest:
