CONNECTION MECHANISM.
Application flied May `19, 1924. serial No. 714,526.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, RICHARD 'LESTER 'LLCoX, a citizen of the United States, residing at l/Vaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Connection Mechanisms, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being t had therein tothe accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a new and improved connection mechanism, ofthe type designed to connect a power member and an operated member, that will yield when subjected to an undue or unusual strain s o i the other member.
Among the aims andA objects of this invention may be recited the provision ofy ar contained and wherein a preferred embodi# ment of my invent-ion is vdisclosed for the purpose of imparting an` understanding of the same.
InV the. drawings: i Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved connection mechanism showing associated therewith a fragmentary portion -of a machine to whichit is applied; i f
Figure 2 is a fragmentary-side yelevation thereof, the parts in section being: taken generally upon line 2 2 of Figure 1;

that .one of such members may continue its v movements wit-hout transmitting motion to.
'22 (Fig. s).
For 1 the j purpose of illustration l only,
r have shown my improved device as associated with the mechanism for operating the plunger of` a. heading machine of the type substantially as shown .in the patent to R. VilcoX, No. 1,104,090, dated July 21, 1914. As thefdevice is equally applicable to other forms of mechanism, I desire it to vbe understood that by such illustration it.
is not intended that thismechanism should g be limited vto suchuse.
In the drawing,10 designates the body of a heading machine, 11a plunger that has af A,reciprocatory movement therein, 12 a` rock lever, jouinaled inthe'bodyy member upon a stud 13, and lcarrying a cam roll 14 which rides upon the face ofthe cam 15, from which motion is imparted to the rock lever.
The above mentioned parts arev well known in the art and thereforek willnot be further described herein.
My invention consists in the means for connecting the `rock lever 12,- with the plunger 11, whereby a reciprocatory vmovement is transmitted to the plunger. l
. A preferred form yof `this connectingk mechanism consists of the intermediate Lblock '16, pivot-allyV connected with the plungery 11 by t-lie pin 17 held against rotaf` 18. In the block 16 isany opening 19 that extends through vfrom one side to the other with a second opening 20,.
tion by a screw extending from the top of the block to the opening 19. Fitted within this opening 19 is the .lever block1 21, lwhich is provided at i its forward end'with `an outwardly inclined angular shelf 2.2, and adjusted within the gate block by a screw 23, so as tovhold the face 24 thereon, atfthe rear of the shelf 22, in alignment with-the face 25 of the opening 20. The lever block 21 and rock lever 12 are hinged together by the pin 26 that is held against rotation bythescrew 27.
Vithin the opening 20 is freely movable a shearing bar 2 9, one corner of the lower edge of which rests upon theangular shelf This bar is held against relative movement by a fillery block 32 that is A.preferably provided with 'an overhanging headf, the underside of which rests upon the top of the block 16-andfthus'holds `it in l proper position within the opening'20 and a wedgeSO, adjusted verticaly b means of Ythe screw 31,* threaded into the lock 16.
Fastenedto the leverblock21, adjacent shearing bar in the second of said openings proj ectiiig into the path of movement of said inner member, whereby said members are held together as a unit under normal conditions; and adjustable wedge means for securing said shearing bar to said outer member. l
7. In' a connection mechanism of the character described; an outer member having a transverse opening therethrough and a second openingat an angle thereto and connected therewith; an inner member mounted in the first of said openings; a shearing bar in the second of said openings projecting into the path of movement of said inner member, whereby said members are held togetherv as a unit under normal conditions; means for adjustably securing said shearing bar to said outermember; and a chute fixed relatively to said inner member to convey away from the connection mechanism that portion lof the shearing bar broken off by the relative movement of the outer and inner members.
8. In a connection mechanism; companion members, one of which in part is slidably mounted Within the other, this latter member having an angular shelf which inclines downwardly to one side thereof; a shearing bar adjustably connected with the outer member andl projecting into the path of movement ofthe inner member for holding said inemberstogether as a unit under normal conditions, the inward position of the shearing bar being determined by said shelf; and a .chute connected with said slidable member opposite said shelf.
9. In a connection mechanism; companion members, one of which in part is slidably mounted within the other, fthis latter member having an angular shelf which inclines downwardly to one side thereof; a shearing bar adjustably connected with the outer member and projecting into the path of movement of the inner member for holding said members together as a unit under normal conditions, the inward position of the shearing bar being determined by said shelf; Y
and a chute connected with said slidable member opposite said shelf, with a part thereof projecting in front of thaty portion of the bar in engagement with the slidably mounted member.
l0. In a connection' mechanism, companion members, one of which in part is slidably mounted within the other, this latter member having an angular shelf which inclines downwardly to one side thereof; a shearing bar adjustably connected with the outer member and projecting into the path of movement of the inner member for holding said members together as a unit under normal conditions, the inward position of the shearing bar being determined by said for holding said members together as a unit Y under normal conditions, one of the corners of said bar engaging said angular shelf which forms a support therefor.
l2. In a connection mechanism of the character described; an outer member havingv a transverse opening therethrough and a second opening at an angle thereto and connected therewith; an inner member mounted in the first of said openings; a
shearing bar in the second-of said openings projecting into the path of movement of said inner member, whereby said members are held together as a unit under normal conditions; and adjustable wedge means for securing said shearing bar to said outer member, comprising a block, a wedge, and means for securing the same to the outer member, whereby the latter maybe moved relatively thereto. v
13. In a connection mechanism of vthe character described: an outer member having a transverse opening therethrough and a second openingv at an angle thereto and connected therewith; an inner member mounted in the first of said openings; a shearing bar in the second of said openings projecting into the path of movement of said inner member, whereby said members ai'e held together as a unit under normal conditions; and adjustable wedge means for securing said shearing bar to said outer member, comprising a block limited in it-s movement in one direction, a wedge, and means for adjustably connecting the wedge to the outer member. i j v 14. In a connection mechanism of the character described; an outer member having a transverse opening therethrough and a second opening at an angle thereto and connected therewith; an inner member mounted in the first of said openings; a shearing bar in the second of said openings projecting into the pathof movement of said inner member, wherebv said members are held together as a unit under normal conditions; and adjustable wedge means for securing said shearing bar toi said outer member,`said wedge means and sliding bar being within said second opening.v
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto afxed my signature.
