Be it known that I, RICHARD LESTER WIL- COX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the 'county of 'New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Die- Holding Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification, reference being hadthere in to theaccompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and im proved ,die holding mechanism for dies of a. heading, upsetting machine or the like, although not limited to such use.
,It is the object of this invention, among other things, to provide a mechanism ofthis character that isnotlimited to dies of a single size but may be utilized to hold dies of various sizes in operative relation to each other, thereby materially increasing the capacity of a single machine. To these and other ends, my invention consists in the die holding mechanism having certain details of construction andcombinations of parts as willbe hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

In heading, upsetting machines or the like, the dies are movably mounted and are substantially square in cross section.
Heretofore these machines have been con structed for a single size die, therefore it 1924. Serial No. 714,527.
has been the practice to have a separate machine for each size of die.
This objection has been partially met bv an effort to make the dies of a uniform size and shape. This lan does not fully meet all conditions, particularly does it fail where a user has a number of dies of varyingsizes that are still serviceable and for other reasons cannot and ought not to be made of any other size. The dies are made of spe c al steel with reat precision as to dimen- 510115 and are ardened and ground with much skill and labor. The improved mecha nism herein shown and described, with a mlnimumndjustment of parts, is adapted for use with dies of various sizes. For the purpose of illustration only, I have shown my device as associated with a heading or upsett ng machine, a portion of the body of which is designated in the drawing by the numeral 10. I TlllS type of machine, as is usual, has a pocket in a portion of the bed within which thedies and associated mechanisms are operable. In therear of this pocket is secured a backing plate 11, having a slot 12, in its upper edge, within which is adjustably mounted a fulcrum stud 13, having a head portion 14 with an opening 1 5 therethrough a threaded shank portion 16, and a rectangular subhead portion 17, which is substantially the same width as slot 12, and within which it is slidably mounted, being held against rotation by reason of its angular cross section, This fulcrum stud is held in any of its adjusted positions by thefnut 18, and washer 19.
The dies 20, twoin number aresupported upon the bottom plate 21, which may or may not rest upon a packing plate .22, as may be necessary or convenient. Between the rear face of the dies 20, and the front of the backing plate 11, are theusual blocks and plates 23 that may be of any conventiona form or shape,and constitute no part of the present invention. Through these blocks and plates 23, is an opening or aperture 24, which registers with an opening 25, in the quill 26, through which the wire rod is fed to the diesand held therebetween in any two of the notches 27 when in register with each other. i
The dies are held against upward movement by a cap or cover 28, which is proa die supporting member; a backing late; an element adjustably connected wit the backing plate toward and away from the die supporting member; and a cap or cover pivotally connected with the element.
6. Means for holding dies in heading or upsetting machines or the like, comprising a die supporting member; a backing plate having a slot therethrough; a stud projecting through the slot and adjustably connected with the backing plate in any of its adjusted positions; and a cap or cover pivotally connected with the stud.

Means for holding dies in heading or upsetting machines or the like, comprising a die supporting member, and a cap or cover arranged so that it may be moved toward and away from a position wherein one face thereof is substantially parallel with one face of the member, the cap being adjustably mounted to vary such parallel position to accommodate dies of various size, the requisite thickness of said member beneath the dies depending upon the relative positlon of the cap or cover.
8. Means for holding dies in heading or upsetting machines or the like, comprising a die supporting member; a backing plate having a feed orifice therethrough; a cap or cover arranged so that it may be moved toward and away from a position wherein one face thereof is substantially parallel with one face of the member, the cap being adjustably mounted to vary such parallel po' sition to accommodate dies of various sizes and the supporting face of the member and the die contacting face of the cap or cover, when in relative operative positions, being substantially equally distant from said orifice.
9. Means for holding dies in heading or upsetting machines or the like, comprising a die supporting member; a cap or cover arranged so that it may be moved toward and away from a position wherein one face thereof is substantially parallel with one face of the member, the cap being adjusta-bly mounted to vary such parallel position to accommodate dies of various sizes; and means for holding the cap or cover against movement in, its down or closed position.
10. Means for holding dies in heading or upsetting machines or the like, comprising a die supporting member; a cap or cover arranged so that it may be moved toward and away from a position wherein one face thereof is substantially parallel with one face of the member, the cap being adjustably mdunted to vary such parallel position to accommodate dies of various sizes; and means for holding the cap or cover against moven'ient in its down or closed position, comprising one or more clamp devices connected with an adjacent fixed part.
11. Means for holding dies in heading or upsetting machines or the like, comprising a die supporting member; a backing plate having a feed orifice therethrough; a cap or cover arranged so that .it may be moved toward and away from a position wherein one face thereof is substantially parallel with one face of the member, the cap being adjustably mounted to vary such parallel position to accommodate dies of various sizes and the face of the member and that of the cap or cover, when in relative operative positions, being substantially equally distant from said orifice; and one or more plates separably secured to the cap or cover that limit the said parallel position of the cap or cover.
12. Means for holding dies in heading or upsetting machines or the like, comprising a die supporting member, and a cap or cover arranged so that it may be moved toward and away from a position wherein one face thereof is substantially parallel with one face of the member, such parallel position being variable to accommodate dies of various sizes, the cap or cover in said parallel position contacting with relatively fixed parts.

Means for holding dies in heading or upsetting machines or the like, comprising a die supporting member; a cap or cover arranged so that it may be moved toward and away from a position wherein one face thereof is substantially parallel with one face of the member, the cap being adjustably mounted to vary such parallel position to accommodate dies of various sizes; and one or more plates connected with the cap or cover and engaging fixed parts to limit such parallel position.
14. Means for holding dies in heading or upsetting machines or the like, comprising a die supporting member; a cap or cover arranged so that it may be moved toward and away from a position wherein one face thereof is substantially parallel with one face of the member, the cap being adjustably mounted to vary such parallel position to accommodate dies of various sizes; one or more plates connected with the cap or cover and engaging fixed parts to limit such parallel position; and means connected with a fixed part for holding the cap or cover against movement in said parallel position.
15. Means for holding dies in heading or upsetting machines or the like, comprising a die supporting member; a cap or cover arranged so that it may be moved toward and away from a position wherein one face thereof is substantially parallel with one face of the member, the cap being adjustably mounted to var such parallel position to accommodate dies of various sizes; and means for holding the cap or cover against movement in its down or closed position, comprising one or more clamp devices connected with men/res and so limited in such movement in one dithet one 'fZECO thereof is substantially parallm with the said face of said member and the same distance from the feed onifi-" whereby dies of varying sizes may be held; and means for securing the cap or cover against inovcinentwin such position.
