To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. I'IALPER, a citizen of the United States, residin at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and tate of Lfichigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Latches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in latches, and more particularly to those used for automobile doors.
- The object of my invention is, among other things, to so construct a latch that it will be released when the outside handle is pulled outwards or the inside handle pushed outwards. In other words, the latch is so constructed that pressure exerted on either handle in the direction in which the door opens will serve two purposes; firstly it will pull the head of the latch bolt inwards and 1n that way disengage it, and secondly it will cause the door to swing outwards on its hinges. Whereas, in the latches at present in use, it is generally necessary 'to employ a turning movement as well as either pulling or pushing the door, according to whether it is being opened from without or within, in order to open it.
With this and other objects in view, my invention consistsin certa'm novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described with the aid of the accompanying drawings and claimed:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of mylatch with the latch bolt in closed position, and
Figure 2 is an end elevation of same.
Figure 3 shows a side view with the latch bolt in open position, and
Figure 4 is an end elevation thereof.
eReferring more -particularly to the drawmgs, 1 designates a latch bolt suitably supported in the casing 2 as at 3 and 4. On the bolt 1 I supply a projecting lug 5 against which the face 7 of the cam 8 is adapted to rotate. The said cam is mounted on a pin 9 supported by the casing 2. The arm 12' which rests on the face 10 of the cam 8, is revolvably mounted by means of a in 16 and is integral with the handle 19. 'Fhe arm 11 rotatably mounted in the ornamental bearing 18 arranged on the outside of the door indicatedby the dotted lines 17, is integral with the handle 13 and rotatably mounted in the bearing 18 by means of a pin 14:.
The sprin 6 which is attached to the pin 15 supporte by the casing 2, is so arranged as to return the latch bolt 1 and the cam 8 back into the position shown in Figure 1.
The method of operation of my latch is as follows:
When the handle 19 on the inside of the door is pushed so as to tend to o n the door the arm 12 is forced downwar s about the pin 16, or again when the handle 13 is pulled so as to tend to open the door the arm 11 rotates downwards about the pin 14:. In either case the face 10 of the cam 8 is depressed and the lug 5 integral with latch bolt 1 forced back by the face 7 of the cam. As soon as pressure on either of the handles is released the spring 6 returns the parts back into their relative positions shown in Fi res 1 and 2.
mm the foregoing it will be seen that I have devised a latch in which the pressure exerted to withdraw the latch bolt will at the same time force the door open. I do not limit myself however to the exact construction herein described and shown, but claim alterations and modifications which fall within the scope of what I claim.
What I claim is:
1. Alatch comprising a casing, a latch bolt slidable therein, 'a lug integral with the latch bolt, a-cam mounted in the casing, and a pivotally mounted am having an inner end extending transversely of the casing and adapted to contact with the periphery of the cam, andan outer end projecting beyond the casing and formin a handle.
2. A latch comprising a late bolt slidable in ya casing, a lug integral with the latch 'bolt, acam mounted in the casing adapted to coact with the lug and pivotally mounted arms having their inner ends extending transversely of the casing in proximity to each other, and adapted to contact with the periphery of the cam and in line with its :ixis, the outer end of one of said arms exin the presence of two witnesses at Majestic tending beyond the casing and forming a.
