IMPROVEMENT lN HOSE-SPANN ERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,445, dated August 25, 1874; application filed January 31, 1874.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID U. BEEGHER, cf Stoneham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Spanners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a plan view of my spanner. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same.

This invention has relation to spanners or' hose-wrenches; and it consists in an instru= ment of this kind having two prongs formed on one end of a suitable handle, in which prongs notches or slots are made to receive v the lugs on the coupling of a hose, thereby making a double-acting wrench, by means of which a coupling can be screwed or unscrewed without the necessity of detaching the wrench 7 from .the coupling to reverse it, as will be herenotches terminate in oblong holes a a. In the drawings I have represented the notches a a on opposite sides of the spanner, but they may be on the same side. Spanners or hosewrenches having a single jaw only have long been known and used; but they are objectionable, for the reason that they require to be detached from a coupling for reversal, which requires time for making the adjustment, and the saving of time is very important in the manipulation of any apparatus to be used at a fire. The advantages of my improvement must be obvious, with which the hose-coupling can be screwed up and unscrewed Without detaching the instrument. By my invention I also obtain a much firmer hold on the coupling than can be obtained by the single pron g-spanner.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ist A hose-wrench having formed on one end of a handle two notched or slotted prongs to receive the lugs on the coupling of a hose, substantially as specified.
