W. J OH NSON DITCH FORMER Filed June 14, 1923 Patented June 30, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT 'OFFI CE.
WILLIAM JOHNSON, OF ONTARIO, OREGON.
DITCH FORMER.
Application filed June 14, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that WILLIAM JOHNSON, a. citizen or the United States of America, residing at Ontario, in the county of Malheur and State of Oregon, has invented new and useful Improvements in Ditch consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view showing the application of the invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail plan view of the invention per se.
Figure 8 is. a transverse sectional view of the structure of Figure 2.
Figures 4-, 5 and 6 are detail views of different forms of teeth with which the device may be provided.
Essentially the invention comprises a plurality of spurred or toothed rings 1 arranged in axial alignment but spaced apart and assembled in a unitary structure by means of bars 2 which are arranged at uniform angular distances upon the rings and against the inner peripheries of the latter, being secured by bolts 3 or other suitable fastening means.
Draft bars i of angular form span diametrically opposite bars 3 at one end of the structure and where the bars 4. cross each other at the apeXes of the angles which is at the axis of the device, an eyebolt 5 is secured to the bars 4 and carries a ring 6 to Serial N'o. 645,339.
which the draft gear 7, indicated in Figure 1 may be attached, the draft gear being of a character to permit the attachment of teams to the same to traverse opposite sides of the ditch.
The rings are provided with radial teeth 7 which may be in the form shown at 7* in Figure 4:
or in the form shown at 7' in Figure 5 or in the form shown at 7 of Figure 6, the teeth being provided with shanks 8 having threaded extremities for the reception of nuts 9 by which they'are secured to the ring.
The shanks 8 of the tooth 7 constituting bolts inserted through the teeth but adapted to receive a nut 9 as is the shank 8 of the tooth 7 the shanks 8 of the tooth 7 are designed for attachment in two adjacent rings, the teeth being preferably of spiral form, so that the teeth 7 will span adjacent rings.
In the operation of the invention it is intended that the ditch to be operated upon by the invention shall be uniformly formed in any conventional manner after which a stream of water is caused to flow through the latter.
The device is then disposed in the ditch and by means of suitable teams drawn forward, the water flowing the while, when the teeth cut away the sides and bottom and thuseffect the desired widening and I deepening of the ditch.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is A ditch former comprising a plurality of rings, radial teeth secured to. said rings, longitudinal bars s anning the rings and secured thereto an maintaining them in axial alignment, annular draft bars con nected with diametrically opposite longitudinal bars and crossing each other at the axes of the rings, and a draft ring secured to the draft ture.
bars at the point of crossing.
In testimony whereof he aflixes his signa- WILLIAM JOHNSON.
