Be it known that l, JOHN WALnHniM, a citizen of the United States, .residing in Elizabeth, in thecounty of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvei'nents in Typewriting Machines,of which the followingis aspecifioa-tion.
This invention relates to sound-deadening hoods crossings fortypewriting machines of the same general type shown in my application, Serial No, 466,820, filed at, i921,- and in the application of 'B. C. Stickney, fiierial no. 9,617, filed December 10, 1920.
The invention comprises ahood having a body part and a cover part; hinged to. said body part, said body part. having anopening in the front thereof large enough to perm-it a typewriting machine to be inserted into: the casing, a front plate being mounted on the body part toclose theft-Ont opening.
It .is one feature of this invention to provide a hood or casing which shall efi'ectii'ely deaden sounds pnoduced by. the machine during the typing ope-ration. For this purpose, the body part and thecover part each comprise pa allel, spaced walls, so that sounds striking the inner wall must pass an air space before reaching the. outer wall, said air space acting as a cushioning means to deaden the vibrations. The bodypart and the cover part are each preferably separate closed units, and each of said units maybe constructed of two substantially similar members, one slightly larger: than the other, so that one fits within the other and is separated therefrom by an air space. Thus, the body part comprises substantially two similar members, each of which has substantially the shape of the complete body part, but one of which is smaller than the other to enable it to fit therein. Similarly, the cover part comprises substantially two similar members of slightly different sizes fitted one it hin the other and separated by an air space. The similar iii-embers of both the body part and the co-ver'partmay be assembled by sliding one member vertically into the other.

For this purpose, the inner members and the outer members may each be provided at their upper or lower endswith flanges which oyerlap the edges of the other member to close the upper or lower openings between the walls. To close the openings at the front side edges, where the inner and outer members terniii'iate, there may be provided anaddition-al flange on one of the members adjacent one side edge and overlapping sideedge of the other member.

To allow easier access to the margin-stops, platen-rotating means and other mechanism associated with i the typewriter carriage, the upper portionof the frontrplate of the body part is hinged so that. it may be swung to lowered position, thus providing a larger spaceat the front of the machine in the vicinity of the car ri'age. -Means' are provided whereby the raising of the cover wlllcause the simultano'ous lowering of the hingedportion' of the front plate To aid the cover in its upward movement, there is' provided a linkage between the body part and the cover. It 1 a feature of this invention to connect the means for lowering the hinged portion of the cover with the cover-opening linkage, so that, when the cover is raised, the hir ed portion of the front. plate will be swung to lowered or ineffective position. The hinged portion at the front of the body part is normally pressed upwardly and rearwardly to raised or effective position by means of springs, said springs restoring the hinged part to its normal position when the cover is lowered and the means which operated to swing the hinged portion downwardly to lowered position is withdrawn.
In another form of the invention, there may be used, instead of the pads as spacers between the walls of the body part and the cover, sheets of sound-deadening material, such as felt, cardboard or any other suitable sound-deadening material, extending between said walls, thus forming t hree plies and double air chambers in all of the walls.

The Underwood standard typewriting machine comprises a main frame 10, which may be supported upon a base 11 by supporting feet 12, said frame having a forward extension 13, in which are positioned banks of keys 14C to operate type-bars, not shown, and cause types carried by said type-bars to print against a platen 15, journaled in the end walls 16 of a platen-fral'ne 17. Said platen-frame forms part of a carriage 19 mounted for letter-feeding movement upon a front rail 20 and arear rail 21 fixed to the main frame. The carriage comprises various forwardly and downwardly-extending operating members, such as the carriagerelease lever 22, the carriage-return fingerpiece 23, and the line-space handle 2 1, said carriage-release lever being guided in its movements by a bracket 25 fixed to the carriage-return finger-piece 23.
For deadening the sounds arising in the typing operation, there is provided a hood or casing having a body part and a cover part or cover 31 hinged at 32 to said body part. The body part comprises a rear wall 35, side walls 36, and a front wall in the form of two end portions 37, said portions being spaced laterally to provide an opening through which the machine may be inserted into the casing, said machine being positioned within said casing by abutments fixed to the rear wall 35 and contacting with the rear posts of the main frame 10. hen the machine is so positioned within the casing, the forward extension 13 projects forwardly from the front wall of the casing. The machine is then enclosed at the rear, sides, and front, and, to enclose the machine at the top, there is provided the cover 31 having a rear wall 50, a top wall 51 provided with a transparent plate 52'to permit the interior of the casing to be viewed, said rear and top walls forming a ceiling for the cover part, a front wall 53 terminating above the front plate 41, and side walls 58. A space or slot is thus provided between the lower edge of wall 53 and the upper edge of plate 41, through which the various carriage-operatinglevers extends. To close all of the slot not actually occupied by these levers, there is provided a set of co-operating cushions 54 and 55, each of said cushions comprising folds or loops of sound-deaden ing material, such as plush, felt, or soft leather, the two-ply mar ins of said loops being clamped between bars 56 to form a unit, one of which is mounted on the front wall 53, so that cushion 5% extends downwardly, and the other of which is mounted on front plate etl, so that cushion extends upwardly, said cushions contacting to close the slot. The cover may be raised by means of a linger-piece 57 and swung about hinge 32 to permit acces to the machine. the inner member being somewhat smaller, so that it may fit within the outer member and be spaced therefrom. The inner member 100 comprises an inner rear and top wall, or ceiling, 102 and inner side Walls 103, while the outer cover part comprises an outer rear and top wall, or ceiling, 104 and outer side walls 105 (Figures 3 and 4). Both the inner and the outer cover parts are cut out to provide the necessary opening for the transparent plate 52. The inner cover part is provided, at its lower rear edge, with flanges 106, so that, when the inner and outer cover parts are assembled, the inner cover part need only be inserted upwardly within the outer cover part, or the outer cover part moved downwardly over the inner cover part until the bottom edges of the outer cover part rest upon the flanges 106. The inner and outer cover parts are provided with indentations or corrugations 107 similar to the indentations 92 of the body part, and are similarly fastened by bolts or rivets 108 similar to rivets 93, passing through the indentations in the inner and outer walls of the cover part and through pads 109 of sound-deadening material, similarly seated in recesses in the inner cover part.
Instead of pads 94, there may be used to space the inner and outer members and 81 from each other, sheets 110 which may be composed of felt, cardboard, leather, or any other sound-deadening material, said sheets extending parallel with the inner and outer members, as indicated in Figure 7. In a similar way, the inner and outer members 100 and 101 of the cover part may be spaced from each other by sheets 111. With this arrangement, it will be seen that there are provided two chambers and three parallel layers in each wall of the body part and the cover part of the casing, thus adding to the sound-deadening effect of the casing.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A sound-deadening casing for a. typewriting machine having a carriage} and a linger-piece projecting therefrom, said eas ing comprising a body-part having a front wall, a cover forming with the top of said front wall a slot through which the fingers piece projects to travel therealong with the carriage, the upper part of said front wall being shiftable downwardly, and covercontrolled means for shifting said portion of the front wall downwardly during the liftin of the cover to open the slot in both directions, and upwardly to effective position during the closing of the cover.
2. A sound-deadening casing for a type- 1 writing machine with a cross-member at the front and top thereof and margin-stop finger-pieces beneath said cross-member, said casing comprlsing a body-part wlth the front wall extending above said finger pieces, and having its upper part movable with respect to the rest of the wall, a cover for said body-part, and cover-controlled means for shifting the movable part of said front wall to a position to expose. said fingerpieces when the cover is open and to restore said upper part to effective position during the closing of the cover.
3. In combination, a typewriting machine and a sound-deadening casing titted thereto, said casing comprising a body-part and a sounddeadening cover-part, said body-part comprising walls positioned one within the other and spaced from each other, the outer walls being formed with inwardly-projecting ribs for strenghtening the walls, and the inner walls being provided with outwardlyprojecting ribs opposite those in the outer walls, said ribs and walls co-operating to form a multiplicity of sound-deadening air-- pockets, and means for fastening the walls together. 7

In combination, a typewrit-ing machine and a sounddeadening casing titted thereto, said casing comprising a cover-part and a sound-deadening body-part, said cover-part comprising walls positioned one within the other and spaced from each other, the outer walls being formed with inwardly-projecting ribs for strengthening the walls, and the inner walls being provided with outwardlyprojecting ribs opposite those in the outer walls, said ribs and walls co-operating to form a multiplicity of souiul-deadening airpockets, and means for fastening the walls together.
5. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine having a carriage and mechanism associated with the carriage, said casing comprising a body partand a cover part hinged at the rear to said body part, said body part having a front opening tl'irough which the machine may be inserted into the casing, and a. front plate for closing said front opening, said front plate having an upper hinged portion which may be swung downwardly to allow greater access to said carriage and its associated mechanism.

A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine having a carriage and mechanism associated with the carriage, said casing comprising a body part and a cover part hinged at the rear to said body part, said body part comprising a front wall, said front wall having an upper hinged portion which may be swung downwardly to allow greater access to said carriage and its associated mechanism, a bellcrank pivotally mounted on said body part, a link connected to said cover part and to one arm of the bell-crank to move said arm rearwardly and move a second arm of the bell-crank forwardly when said cover part is raised, and a second link connected to the second arm of the bell-crank and contacting with the hinged portion so that said second link moves forwardly to swing the hinged portion downwardly when the cover part is raised.
17. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine having a carriage and mechanism associated with the carriage, said casing comprising a body part and a cover part hinged at the rear to said body part, said body part comprising a front wall, said front wall having an upper hinged portion which may be swung downwardly to allow greater access to said carriage and its associated mechanism, a bell-crank pivotally mounted on said body part, a link connected to said cover part and to one arm of the bell-crank to move said arm rearwardly and move a second arm of the bell-crank forwardly when said cover part is raised, a spring fixed to said second arm and to said body part to assist in raising the cover by drawing said second arm forwardly, and a. second link connected to the second arm of the bell-crank and contacting with the hinged portion so that said second link moves forwardly to swing the hinged portion clownwardly when the cover part is raised.
18. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine having a carriage and mechanism associated with the carriage, said casing comprising a body part and a cover part hinged at the rear to said body part, said body part comprising a front wall, said front wall having an upper hinged portion which may be swung downwardly to allow greater access to said carriage and its associated mechanism, a bell-crank pivotally mounted on said body part, a link connected to said cover part and to one arm of the bell-crank to move said arm rearwardly and move a second arm of the bell-crank forwardly when said cover part is raised, a second link connected to the second arm of the bell-crank and contacting with the hinged portion so that said second link moves forwardly to swing the hinged portion down 90 wardly when the cover part is raised, and means for guiding said second link in its forward movement. a
19. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine having a carriage and mechanism associated with the carriage, said casing comprising a body part and a cover part hinged at the rear to said body part,
said body part comprising a front wall, said front wall having an upper hinged portion which may be swung downwardly to allow greater access to said carriage and its associated mechanism, a bell-crank pivotally mounted on said body part, a link connected to said cover part and to one arm of the bell-crank to move said arm rearwardly and move a second arm of the bell-crank forwardly when said cover part is raised, a second link connected to the second arm of the bell-crank and contacting with the hinged portion so that said second link moves forwardly to swing the hinged portion downwardly when the cover part is raised, said second link being drawn rearwardly when the cover part is lowered, and spring means for normally pressing said hinged portion upwardly, said spring means returning the hinged portion to its upward position when the second link is withdrawn.
20. A sound-deadening casing having a slot along which a finger-piece on the carriage travels, slot-sealing means including a yieldable lip extending along the said slot, and a lip-support pivoted to swing outwardly to open the slot.
