Description
W.H. HASKELL.
Springs .fo-r Vehicles.
Patented Aug.18,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. HASKELL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOB. TO
HIMSELF, G. W. HASKELL, AND H. J. HASKELL, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRINGS FOR VEHICLES.
i Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,247, dated August 18, 1874; application filed July 6, 1874.'
To all whom it may concern: y
Beit known that I, WILLIAM H. HAsKELL, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Spar-Wagons, of whichv the following is a specification The object of my invention is to impart greater freedom, of movement to the body, spars, and springs of a spar-wagon than in those of ordinary construction, and I attain this object by suspending the body A of the wagon from the spars B B by double-jointed connections D, in the manner fully described hereafter, and as illustrated by the plan view, Figure 1, and transverse sectin, Fig. 2, ofthe accompanying drawings.
The front and rear axles F and F of the wagon are connected together by a suitablybraced longitudinal bar, Gr, and to the upper sides of these axles are secured half-springs H, which support at their outer extremities from spreading, and otherwise accommodating themselves to the movements of the springs, an objection which I have e'ectually overcome by interposing links D between the said cross-pieces J and the spars, thus permitting the latter to yieldindependeutly at one or both ends, and the body consequently to undulate as required without any of the usual unpleasant joltin g.
The links D may be variously constructed, and may be jointed to the spars and body in any suitable manner. In the present instance they are jointed directly at one end to the eX- tremities of the cross-pieces J which extend beneath the wagon-body, and at their opposite ends to clips a which embrace the spars.
Any lateral rocking movement of the body upon its doublejointed connections is prevented by setting the latter at an angle as Shown in Fig. 2.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the body A, springs H H, transverse bars J, and links D, connecting the bars to the under sides of the spars as set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WM. H. HASKELL.
Witnesses WM. A. STEEL, HARRY SMITH.
