a citizen of the United States, residing iny the cityof Tintah, county of Traverse, and
State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car-Door Holding and Sea-ling Devices, of kwhich the following is a specification.' y 'Y y M invention relates 'to-improvements 1n car oor 'holdingiandl sealing devices, one objectl thereof being to provide simple and durable means readily 'applicable toa car structure .and easily adjusted to hold the ordinary car door in doorwayclosingposition andfto seal the door at the sides thereof against leakagel of grain or other lading Another object is *to provide a device of the .present nature for cars adapted to accommodate doors of `dierent widths and thickness and 'designed-to be quickly and easily operated to free the door when a car is loaded as well as when the saine is empty.
A further object -is tov apply a door holding vand vsealing-device, as above, the same being readily applicable to the various freight cars and designed to avoid the driving of nails into door sections and door frames,'whereby injury thereto by such nailing is eliminated. L Y
With the foregoing` and other objects in view, which will appear in the'following description, the inventionresides inthe novel combination and arrangement `of parts and inthe details ofy construction hereinafter" described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, wherein similar reference characters have been employed to designate similar parts throughouty the several views, it will be observed that the illustrated embodiment of my invention, includes-two opposed door engaging members A, BshoWn as applied to the usual freight car structure includingfa floor 10, sides 11 and lining 12, said structure having an ordinary doorway thereinffiamed atkthe sides thereof by posts 13, 13a and atthe top by a head-rail 14.
. One member A or clip-bar, as it may be termed, is preferablyl formed of metalV of heavy guage. Said member comprises a web or shank 15 with a right angular at-A taching flange 16 at one side thereof and an opposedL abutment ange 17 at the outer yside thereof. The inner angle between the web 15 and flange 17 is slightly greater than 90 to produce 4a wedging and comprensating effect as will more fully hereinafter appear. The attaching `1iange`16`is formed with spaced, lateral slots 16a therein. Lag screws 18 inserted throughthese slots and threaded in the post 13 secure the clip-bar A in upright position on said post, said slots permitting of horizontal adjustment of said clip bar A, when `that is desired.
The door engaging member B opposite said clip-bar A, includes an upright segmental drum b, trunnio-ned at its ends to turn on the axis thereof, also a' handle r19 for turning the drum, and latching mechanism e for releasably securing the drum in door holding "and sealing -relation.` The drum b comprises a semi-cylindrical shell 20V of relatively light sheet metal and quadrant-like head and bottom pieces 21, 22. A trunnion-boss 23 depending from the bottom piece 22 is journaled ina bearing plate 24 seated in the car floor 10, said plate having a circular recess 24;"L in its upper face, adapt- .ed to revolubly receive said bottom piece, said-recess being Vof a depthequal to the thickness of said bottom piece 22. The handle 19 is hinged on'tlie drum Z2 near its upper end, said handle being swung' outwardly of the drum and thus supplying a lever for turning the same, when that is desired.
VThe latching mechanism c comprises a toothed or ratcheted quadrant 28, secured to the upper face of the top piece 21 of the drum band a dog 29said dog being pivoted at one end on the bracket 26 and yieldingly held at its other end in cooperative relation with respect to the ratchet quadrant 28 by means oi` a. spring 30.
In the use of my device, a car door, in sections or unitary form, is applied to a doorway by inserting one edge ot the door structure between the post 13 and flange 17 ot the clip-bar A. Sliding said door into the clip as iar as the angularly related flange 17 will permit, results in the wedging ot said door by said flange 17' against said post 13. In this connection it will be noted that the clip-bar A accommodates doors of different thicknesses. Having thus arranged the door, it will be. understood that the edge thereof opposite the clip-bar A will lap the post 13a more or less according to the width thereof. These variations in dimension are provided for inthe diameter of the drum b. Lifting the handle 19 position against the post 13a.
and turning the drum I) by said handle to swing the clamping edge Q0il ot' the shell 2O to the lett (Fig. 3), results in swinging the drum b around the adjacent edge of the door structure and bringing said clamping edge 20a of said shell to bear against the margin of the door. In this movementA of the drum I), the dog 29 slides over the teeth of the quadrant 28. Applying surlicient power to the handle 19, the shell 2O forces the door tightly against the post 13a. Dropping behind the passing teeth of the quadrant 28, the dog 29 prevents retraction of the drum Z), which, through the shell 20, clamps thedoor closed against the post l1 (Fig. 2), thus preventing edgewise movement or' the door out of its closed, wedged In loading the car to a height above the handle 19 in its normally depending position, said handle is swung upward and lett standing in that Yrelation to permit of ready access thereto when it is desired to unload the car. To free the'door after it is clamped in place, as above explained, the dog 29 is lifted to permit oll retraction of the drum b and said drinn thereafter swung back into initial position (F ig. 3) by means ot the handle 19. Thus freed, the door in whole or in sectional part, according to the structure thereo'f, may be shifted sidewise out of engagement with the clip-bar A and thereatter removed from the car. At this point, attention is invited to the fact thatthe shell 20, owing to its circular cross-sectional form, may be turned in the lading of a car with a minimum of resistance. This feature, which allows for the use of relatively light and inexpensive stock in the drum I), and the ability of the shell 2O to accommodate doors ot different widths are important advantages.
In cars titted with a lining, as at 12, a space is left between the lining 1Q and post 13a to receive the drum Z), said lining being brought up closely to the shell 20 of the drum to 'torni a grain tight joint between said lining and shell. Thus arranged,- the drum b functions, as above explained, and, further, forms a seal for the lading ot a car by guar-ding it away from the edge of the door against the post 13a.
Changes in the speoic form ot my invention, as herein disclosed, may bemade within the scope ot what is claimed without departing Yfrom the spirit ot` my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by LettersPatent is:
1. The combination with a car having a space between the lining thereof and an adjacent door post, of a door clamp and sealing guard Comprising an upright, semicylindrical shell axially mounted in said space and closely brushing the adjacent terminus oit said lining, means for turning the shell, said shell, when turned into one position being adapted to encase the adjacent edge of' the door and bear at one edge against the margin of said door for holding the door against said post, and, when turned to retracted position, to free the door, and releasable means for securing said shell against retraction.
2. The combination with a car, of a door clamp comprising` an upright, semi-cylindrical shell mounted toturn on its axis into vand out ol' the angle between a door post 4name 'to this specification.
