ERNEST A. TESCH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINATION DO OB BRAOE AND LATCH.
Application filed July 29,
This invention relates to certain novel improvements in combination door braces and latches and has for its principal ob ect the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly efficient in use and economical in manufacture.
Among the several objects of the inven-. tion is to provide a combination door brace and latch which will function to retain the door in a predetermined openedposition and whereby the latch willfunction to automatically latch the door in closed position.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of construction and in which: v
Fig. 1 is an inside elevational view of a door construction showing the invent-ion associated therewith;
Fig. 2 is a sectional detail view taken substantially on line 2'2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail View taken substantially on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, 10 indicates a door construction of a garage or other like building. The door construction includes the side jambs 11 to which are hingedly connected the doors 12 through the medium of hinges 13. WVith these door jambs and door I associate my improved door brace and latch and in the preferred form of construction the invention includes two guiding structures 14 and 15. The guiding structures each include 1927. Serial-N0. 209,325. 1
Pivotally carried by the upper of the plate 16 is the latch bolt 45. This latch bolt 45 carries two parallel spaced plates 46 adapted to be disposed on opposite sides on the upper of the plate 16. The outer end portion of the latch bolt 45 carries a head 47 and this head has its lower end portion beveled outtwo spaced parallel extending plates 16 and dly d downwardly as at 48 whereby 16. The plates are arranged in pairs and have their end portions 17 secured together through the medium of spacing plates 18. These spacing plates 18 are secured to the doors 12 through the medium of screws 10 or other suitable connecting elements. The end portions 20 of the plates 16 overlap the edge 21 of the door 12 ofthe doors 12 and these end portions when in overlapping position abut the edges 22 of the plate 16. The end portions 20 of the plate 16 are secured to a spacing plate 23 secured to the door 12 through the medium of suitable securing elements 24 such as screws or the like. The end portions 25 of the plate 16 are secured to a spacing plate 26 secured to the door 12 through the medium of screw elements 27. The plates 16 and 16 provide suitable guidewhen the head engages the end portion 20 .of the upper of the plate 16 the latch bolt will be automatically raised to permit the head to be disposed in latching relation with respect to the upper of the plates 16, said head being of suflicient weight to cause the latch bolt to drop into latch engagement with respect to the upper of the plates 16 and 16 by gravity.
In use ,to open the doors, the head 32 is rotated by means of the handle elements 38 whereby to release the plates 35 and 37 from clamping engagement with the plates 16 and 16. As the door is swung open the clamping structure will move longitudinally with respect to the guiding structures. To hold the door in the predetermined open position the heads 32 are rotated in an opposite direction to clamp the plates and 37 into clamping engagement with respect to the plates 16 and 16.
From the description herein set forth taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen' that I provide a durable structure for retaining the door in a predetermined open position and which structure includes a simple arangement for effectively latching the doors in closed position.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable oi? Va riation and modification, without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination, a guiding structure adapted to be secured to a door and including spaced parallel members providing a guide way, a clamping structure including a stud projecting through the guideways, a plate having threaded engagement with the stud and arranged on one side of said members, a plate having loose connection with the stud and arranged ontheopposite side of saidmemhere in parallel relation with said first men tioned plate, a body sleeve through which said stud projects, a head formed on said stud, a handle carried by said head for facilitating rotation of said head to move said first and said second mentioned plate into clamping relation with said members, a bracing rod adapted for connection with the j amb to which said door is hingedly supported, an ear formed on said sleeve, and means connecting said ear to one end portion of said bracing rod.
2, In combination a guiding structure adapted to be secured to a door including spaced apart par-allelly extending members providing a guide way, a clamping structure including plates adapted to have portions disposed on o posite sides. of the portions providing sai guideway so as to be slidable tl ierealong, means for clamping said clamping plates to said plates providing said guideway, a connecting member mounted on the jamb of the door, a connecting link extending between said clamping structure and said connecting member, means for pivotally connecting said connecting link to said connecting member and said clamping member, said connecting link serving to'hol'd said door against opening movement when said clamping member fastens said clamping plates against said plates providing said gui'deway.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
