Description

6.1. CAPEWELL.
Nail-Extractors. f
,Patented Aug.18,1874.`
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE J. CAPEWELL, OF CHESHIRE, ASSIGNOR. TO DOUGLAS F. MALTBY AND LEWIS J. ATWOOD, OF WATER-BUBY, AND ELI CURTIS, OF WATER- TOWN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN NAIL-EXTRACTORS.
g Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,217, dated August 18, 1874; application filed April 21,1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE J. CAPEWELL, of Cheshire, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Nail-Extractor; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention is an improvement on' the implements for extracting nails for which Letters Patent have heretofore been granted to me 5 and consists in a nail-extractor with chisel-edged or sharpened jaws, constructed in the manner hereinafter described.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved nail-extractor, and Fig. 2 is a rear edge view of same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
In nail-extractors of this class heretofore constructed, it has been found necessary to employ some kind of percussive force to drive the ends of the jaws into the wood. By my present :invention this is obviated.
A and A are the jaws of a nail-extractor, A being the xed jaw, and A the `movable jaw formed on the rear end of the lever B. The edges a of the jaws A and A are sharpened longitudinally. The fixed jawA is secured in any desirable manner to a slot, c, in the ferrule C, and the lever B has a slot, b, formed in it, through which passes the fixed jaw A, and within which is fastened the movable jaw A. A pivot, c, passing through the lever B and xed jaw A, secures them together.
A spring, d, is fastened to the lower side of the lever B, and, passingthrough the slot b, bears upon the edge of the fixed jaw A. The ferrule C has secured within it a handle or shaft D.
My nail-extractor being constructed substantially as above described, it is operated by placing the extractor at right angles with the nail-head it is sought to extract, with the fixed jaw immediately behind the nail-head, and with the lever B parallel to the grain of the wood. The handle is then pressed down until the fixed jaw A is embedded into the wood close to the nail, and as the pressure is exerted by the hand, the handle is drawn to- Ward the operator, which causes the jaw A at the rear end of the lever B to embed itself into the wood, and grasp and confine the nailhead between the two jaws, which hold it firmly until the nail is withdrawn by the continued drawing down of the handle by the operator.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that my nail-extractor is operated with great facility, drawing the nails easily and without bending them, and also without any material injury to the wood of the box or its cover.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein -described lnail-extractor, having the edges a of its jaws sharpened, so as to easily enter the wood and embrace the head of the nail without the application of percussive force thereto.
GEORGE J. CAPEWELL.
