Description

@dirti @frn THOMAS' B. HENKLE, or KNIGHTsrowN, INnIANA.
Letters Patent No. 111,207, dated January 24, 187
-lMPRovEMeN-r IN Box-OPENRS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent andmaking of the same.
To all whom fit may conce/rn Be it known thatl, THOMAS B. HENKLE, of'
Knightstown, county of Henry, State of Indiana,'
have invented anew and usefull Improvement in Box-0peners; and I dovhereby` declare the following to be a full, clear, and 'exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a partei this speciiication, in which the figure represents a side elevationofthe instrument, showing its operation'in opening a box.
rlhis invention 4relates to an 'instrument for opening boxes, removing hoops 'from barrels, and for other similar purposes; and
My improvement consists in a novel construction of such a device, which will be specifically set forth in the. following description and claim. To enable those skilled inthe art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its operation ,and construction'.
In the annexed drawing- A represents the hand-lever;l
B, the fulcrum-bar; and
C, the lifting-hook.
'I he'hand-lever terminates at one end in a iiattened bar constructed with ears, A1 and A, in which holes are bored for the reception of the, pivots upon which the fulcrurn-barand 1ifting-hook respectively` turn.
By rcferencevto the drawing it will be` seen tnat the axis of the fulcrnm-bar is onlynslightly in advance of that of the lifting-hook, by which arrangement a powerful leverage is exerted upon the bookin lifting the hand-lever. s Y' The-pivoted end of the fulcrum-bar is bifurcated,
the jaws fitting over the ear A1 ofthe hand-lever. It has the bow-shaped form shown, to permit the liftinghooks to operate within it, and terminates at its lower end in a dog, B', which enters, the wood at the side of the box to be opened.
The lifting-hook is also bifurcated, hung by its jaws on the pivot in the ear A, and is constructed with claws, O', bent inward at right angles to it.
In operating the tool, the fulcrum-bar may be .thrown back over the hand-lever to allow a hammer v to be used in driving the claws of the lifting-hook under the cover of the box.
Thefulcrum-bar, being turned .back into the position shown in the drawing, enters by its, do'g the Wood on the side of the box, when, by raising the outer end of the hand-lever, the hook will be lifted, removing the top of the box, .the lfulcrum-bar serving to hold the body of the box firmly down upon the door. Having thus described my invention, l What I ,claim, rand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The device for opening boxes and for similar pur-v poses herein'set forth, composed of the hand-lever A A1 A, Fulcrum-bar B B', and lifting-hook O C', constructed and arranged relatively to one another substantially as specied.
In testimonylwhereof ,I have signed my lname to witnesses.
