UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD B. BEVERLEY, OF HEBARDSVILLE, GEORGIA; JULIA BEVERLEY -A.DMINIS TRACER-IX OF SAID RICHARD IB. BEVERLEY, DECEASED.
FENGEPOSI'.
Application filed March 26, 1924. Serial N'o. 701,927.
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that RICHARD BEVERLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hebardsville, in the county of \Vare and State of Georgia, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in F enceposts, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to reinforced concrete fence posts for general use, and one object of the invention is to provide a fence post of hollow, concrete construction, embodying means for readily securing the fence wires thereto, or for releasing the same as desired.
Another object is to provide a post of the kind described wherein reinforcing wires are incorporated in a novel manner for binding the elements together.
Another object is to provide a securing means for the several wires, said securing means being in the form of a metal tie-rod extending from the top of the post to the bottom and having its lower end inserted in the ground, so that the said rod will also serve as a lightning conductor,
Another object is to provide a post of light and strong construction having means for releasably securing fence wires thereto in such a manner that the wires may be stretched taut at any tim without the necessity of first loosening the staples as ordinarily required.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a front elevation of a section of wire fence as constructed with this post;
Figure 2 is an enlarged top view;
Figure 3 is a side view;
Figure l is an enlarged horizontal section through a post and one of the lugs;
Figure 5 is a vertical section through a post and the lugs thereof.
The invention consists in forming a fence post 1 of concrete or any suitable composition or plastic material, the said post being rectangular in cross section and hollow at its center as shown at 2, and embodying a plurality of aligned lugs 3 along one face thereof. These lugs are spaced apart as far as may be desirable to have the fence wires 4L spaced. Aligned tie-rod holes 5 are formed vertically through the lugs 3 adapted to slidingly engage the metal tierod 6, the said tie-rod being of a length suflicient to extend from the top of the post down into the ground. Main reinforcing wires 7 are embodied in the four corners of the post, and lug reinforcing wires 8 are turned or twisted at 9 around these wires 7 and extended in the form of loops 10 out through the several lugs 3 to serve as reinforcements for the said lugs. The fence wires 4: are located in place between the lugs 3 and then the tie-rod 6 is thrust down through the holes 5 thus securing the wires all in place. The wires are released by merely withdrawing the rod 6. This rod 6 also serves as a lightning conductor leading from all the fence wires into the ground. The post so constructed is relatively light and also very strong, and is well adapted to all general fence purposes.
While I have herein described a certain specific manner and method of constructing and assembling the elements of my invention, it is understood that I may vary from the same in minor details, not departing from the spirit of my invention, so as best to construct a practical device for the purpose intended, as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
A fence post of concrete construction, rectangular in cross section and hollow at its center, and having a plurality of aligned and spaced lugs along one face thereof, the said lugs being formed with vertically aligned tie-rod holes; main reinforcing wires embodied in the corners of the post; lug reinforcing wires tied to the main reinforcing wires and looped out through the several lugs; and a tie-rod to slidingly engage the said tie-rod holes, the tie-rod being long enough to extend into the ground.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
RICHARD B. BEVERLEY.
