E. M. RITTEAU WINDOW LIFT AND VENTILATOR File b. 11, 1924 Patented June 9, 1925.
PATENT OFFICE.
ELLA I. BITTEAU, OF LIBERTY, MISSOURI.
wnmow LIFT AND VENTILATOR.
Application filed February 11, 1924. Serial No. 691,994.
To all whom it may concern:
Befit known that I, ELLA M. RI'1'1EAU,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Liberty, in the county of Clay and State of Missouri, have invented certainnew and ,useful Improvements in Window Lifts and.
Ventilators; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in' the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference] being had tothe accom anying drawings, and to the,
figures of re erence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a combined window lift and ventilator. The primary object of the invention is to provide an inexpensive, easily applied ventilator which may alsb serve as a" hand hold for, sliding the window sash.
The invention is so constructed that it may be applied to a standard window sash without materially alteringthe construction of the sash since it consists of an insertable guide having a slot which may register with a slot cut through thehorizontal rail of the window sash, the guide being provided with a slide which may overlap the slot to vary the effective length thereof and consequently vary the effective port opening through the window sash.
The novel construction of the invention will beapparent by reference to the following description in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is' a front elevational view of a window sash to which my invention is applied.
' Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the ventilator in use, and
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the I line 33 of- Fig. 1.
and a finger receiving slot 7 is cut through the slot of the recess about one-half the length of the recess or preferably a little less. A metallic guide plate 8 is inserted in the recess and secured thereto by suitable fasteningideviccs,fol- example screws 9 and 10. The guide plate has outstanding edges 11 and 12 with under cut grooves l3'and 14'to receive aslide 15 having beveled edges received by the under cut grooves. The ends of the slide are provided with depressions 16 and 17.
The slide may be slid over to cover the slotted portion 70f the guide plate as shown at the bottom of the sash 2, Fig. 1, or it may be moved over to uncover the opening as shown by the top rail 5 of sash 3 or the slide may be adjusted to'partially uncover either opening so as to vary the effective. port area of the opening and therefore vary the amount. of air admitted through the openmg.
I prefer to place the ventilators on the bottom sash and upper sash and slightly open the'openings so that air can enter the bottom opening and pass out through the top opening, creating a circulation or draft upwardly along the window, so as to exhaust foul air from the room and insure a fresh supply of air when desired.
The ventilating feature of my invention is not its only advantage, but the novelty .lies in the fact that the ventilator is so constructed that the slots constitute hand holds or finger receiving slots through which the fingers may be inserted to afford sufiicient grip on the window sash to raise or lower it.
I am aware that window ventilators have been provided prior to my invention with means for admitting air through the bottom rail of the window sash, but such ventilators of which I have any knowledge are considerably more expensive to manufacture and more diflicult to apply than my in-v vention and they do not provide means for raising and lowering the window sash, so it is by no means an unimportant feature of my inventionthat the ventilator serves a dual purpose, that is, of a window lift or hand hold and a ventilator. A
What I'claim and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
The combination with a window sash haw ing a rail provided with an elongat, I ing therein, of a ventilator comp fiat plate inset in the rail so that i face is flushed with the face oft-he plate having a length greater-then' the length of the opening in the sash rail and having an opening coinciding with the opening in" the sash trail, the plate being provided with undercut grooves extending. from end to end, the ends of the grooves being closed by the sash rail and a closure slide of lesslength than "the plate movable longitudinally of the plate and received in in the plate and .inthe rail.
ture.
ELLA M; RITTEAU.
In testimony whereof I afilx my v sig'na-
