Be it known that I, Huron E. TNGVOLD- s'rao, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Sioux City, in the county of .Voodliury and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Metal Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
lily invention has for its principal object the production of an improved sheet metal receptacleso constructed as to obviate riveting or soldering.
The invention has for a. further objectthe production of a receptacle particularly adapted for rough usage, such as feeding and watering stock, and formed of a single piece of sheet metal so bent, folded and formed as to provide a water-tight, rigid and stable receptacle which obviates riveting, soldering or welding, and the cost of production which is reduced to the minimum.
These and other objects and advantages I successfully attain in the embodiment hereinafter described, defined in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which forma part of this application and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, of which,-

My invention resides, broadly, in a recepa tacle formed from a single. piece of sheet material, so sheared as to provide a bottomand side walls, end walls bent upwardly from the bottom and folded downwardly upon themselves, thus providing inner and outer end walls. The inner end walls and the side walls are joined by web portions which folded upon themselves when the side walls and end walls are bent upwardly and then. the. folded web portions are folded against the outer faces of the end walls.
Referring, now, more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, it will be understood that the device is formed of a single integral sheet of suitable material sheared in a flat blank,
shown in Fig. 1, and while I have illustrated on sheet 1 of the drawings but one end portion of the blank, it will be under stood that the other end portion is areplica thereof, both ends'being sheared, bent and folded as hereinafter set forth. 'The portion of the blank which forms the bottom of the receptacle is representedv at 8, and the side walls at 9. I sented generally at 10, and are so formed and sheared as to provide inner end wall portions, 11, outer wall portions, 12, and an intermediate transverse port-ion between the inner and outer walls, represented at 13. The inner end wall portions, '11, and the ends of the side walls are joined by web portions, 14:. The free. edges of the side, walls are preferably formed with extending end portions, 15, while the outer end walls and the, portions, 13, having extended end portions, 16 and 17, respectively.
In forming the device the sheet metal blank is preferably so sheared that when bent and folded to form a receptacle the side walls will flare outwardly and the end walls be disposed in vertical planes. In forn'iing the device the side walls are bent upwardly from the bottom on the lines, 18,

The inner end walls are then bent upwardly on the lines, 21, the web portions, 14, coincidentally with the i1p ward bending of the walls, 11, being bent outvv'ardly on the lines, 22 and 23, and folded upon themselves on the line, 24., thus bringing the bends, and 23, substantially together. The end walls are then folded outwardly and downwardly upon themselves on the intermediate lines, 25, extend. ing longitudinally of the portions, 16, during which operation the folded web portions, 1 1, are projected through slots, 26, in the outer end walls, 1?, which slots are obviously inclined at approximately the sa ine The end walls are repreappended claims, to-wit,

The folded web portions, 14, are then bent toward each other and against the outer faces of the outer walls, 12, and coincidentally with the operation of the bending and folding the webs and end walls, the folded portions, 16, are bent outwardly to approximately horizontal positions on the lines, 27 and 28, and the extended end portions, 29, of the flanges, 15, inserted between the end portions of the folded strip, 13, a distance from the extreme ends thereof; the folded portions, 13, are then bent downwardly against the web portions, 14, and the end portions, 16 and 17, are. then folded over upon themselves on the lines, 30, thus forming a rigid and secure receptacle without the use of rivets, soldering or welding, and without in any way weakening or injuring the stock.
The outer end walls preferably depend below the plane of the bottom of the receptacle to support the receptacle in spaced relation to the ground, and the lower edge portion of' the walls, 12, are preferably formed with flanges, 31.
Although I have described and illustrated but one embodiment of the invention, 1 would not be understood as being limited to such specific construction, for various alterations may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts herein disclosed without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the 1. A hog trough formed of a single sheet of material and including a bottom, side walls bent upwardly therefrom, end walls bent upwardly from the bottom and down wardly upon themselves, in order to form foundation rests for the trough, and web portions joining the side walls and inner end walls, folded upon themselves and against the outer faces of the end walls.

A hog trough formed of a single sheet of material and including a bottom, side walls bent upwardly and outwardly therefrom, end walls bent upwardly from the bottom and downwardly upon themselves, in order to form foundation rests for the trough, said downwardly bent end walls being in creased in width toward their lower edges, and web portions joining the side walls and inner end walls, folded upon themselves against the outer faces of the end walls.

A receptacle formed of a single piece of sheet material and including a bottom, side walls, end-walls bent upwardly from the bottom and downwardly upon themselves, thus providing inner and outer end walls, and web portions joining the side walls and inner end walls folded upon themselves, the outer end walls being slotted, and said folded web portions being extended through the slots and folded toward each other and against the outer faces of the outer end walls, and the upper edge portions of the end walls being folded downwardly against the web portions.
5. A hog trough formed of a single sheet of material and including a bottom, side walls bent upwardly and outwardly therefrom, endwalls bent upwardly from the bottom and downwardly upon themselves,
in order to form foundation rests for the trough, said downwardly bent end walls being increased in width toward their lower edges, and provided with slots, and web portions joining the side walls and inner end walls, folded upon through the slots, and folded against the outer faces of said downwardly bent end walls.

A receptacle formed of a single piece of sheet material and including a bottom, side walls bent upwardly from the bottom, end walls bent upwardly from the bottom and folded downwardly upon themselves, providing inner and outer end walls joined by upper folded portions, the outer end walls and said upper folded portions hav ing extended end portions, web portions joining the side walls and inner end walls, folded upon themselves and folded against the outer faces of the outer end walls, and flanges on the upper edges of the side walls having extended end portions inserted within said extended end portions of the upper folded portions, and said upper folded por tions being folded outwardly and down wardly together with the extended flange end portions.

A receptacle formed of a single piece of sheet material and including a bottom, side walls bent upwardly from the bottom, end walls bent upwardly from the bottom and folded downwardly upon themselves. providing inner and outer end walls joined by upper folded portions, the outer end walls and said upper folded portions having extended end portions, web portions joining the side walls and inner end walls, folded upon themselves and folded against the outer faces of the outer end walls, and flanges on the upper edges of the side walls. having extended end portions inserted with in said extended end portions of the upper folded portions, said upper folded portions being folded outwardly and downwardly together with the extended flange end portions,

A receptacle formed of a single piece of sheet material and including a bottom, side walls bent upwardly from the bottom, end walls bent upwardly from the bottom and folded downwardly upon themselves, providing inner and outer end walls joined by upper folded portions, the outer end walls and said upper folded portions having extended end portions, said outer end walls being provided with slots, and web portions joining the side walls and inner end walls, folded upon themselves, extended through said slots and folded against the outer end walls, said upper folded end portions of the end walls being folded downwardly against the folded web portions, and said extended end portions being folded upon themselves.

A receptacle formed of a single piece of sheet material and including a. bottom, side walls bent upwardly from the bottom, end walls bent upwardly from the bottom and folded downwardly upon themselves, providing inner and outer end walls joined by upper folded portions, the outer end walls and said upper folded portions having extended end portions, said outer end walls being provided with slots, web portions joining the side walls and inner end walls, folded upon themselves, extended through said slots and folded against the outer end walls, said upper folded end portions of the end walls being folded downwardly against the folded web portions, and said extended end portions being folded upon themselves, and flanges on the upper edges of the side walls having extended end portions inserted within said extended end portions of the upper folded portions, and said upper folded portions being folded outwardly and downwardly together with the extended flange end portions.

A receptacle formed of a single piece of sheet material and including a bottom, side walls bent upwardly from the bottom, end walls bent upwardly from the bottom and folded downwardly upon themselves, providing inner and outer end walls joined by upper folded portions, the outer end walls and said upper folded portions having extended end portions, said outer end walls being provided with slots, web portions joining the end walls and inner side walls, folded upon themselves, extended through said slots and folded against the outer end walls, said upper folded end portions of the end walls being folded downwardl 1 against the folded web portions, and said extended end portions being folded upon themselves, and flanges on the upper edges of the side walls having extended end portions inserted within said extended end portions of the upper folded portions, said upper folded portions being folded outwardly and downwardly together with the extended flange end portions, and said extended end portions of the upper folded portions and the outer end walls being folded upon themselves.

A receptacle formed of a single sheet of material and including a bottom, end and side walls bent upwardly therefrom, the upper edges of the end walls being provided with folded portions, flanges on the upper edges of the side walls, having extended tips inserted within the folded portions, said folded portions being again folded downwardly together with the extended tips, and web portions joining the side and end walls, folded upon themselves, and each being folded against a wall to close the corners of the receptacle.

A receptacle formed of a single sheet of material and including a bottom, end and side walls bent upwardly therefrom, the upper edges of the end walls being provided with folded portions; flanges on the upper edges of the side walls, having extended tips inserted within the folded portions, said folded portions being again folded downwardly together with the extended tips.
13. A receptacle formed of a single sheet of material and including a bottom, side walls bent upwardly from the bottom, end walls bent upwardly from the bottom and folded downwardly upon themselves, providing inner and outer end walls joined by upper folded portions, the outer end walls and said folded portions having extended end portions, the upper edges of the side walls being provided with flanges having extended tips received within the extended ends of the folded portions,-the folded portions being bent downwardly together with said tips, and the extended end portions and folded portions being folded back upon themselves.
14. A receptacle formed of a single sheet of material and including a bottom, end and side walls bent upwardly therefrom, the upper edges of the end walls being provided with folded portions having extended ends, flanges on the upper edges of the side walls having extended tips inserted within the extended folded portions, said folded portions being again folded downwardly together with theextended tips, and the ends of the folded portions being folded back upon themselves.
