J. GANNON FOLDING COT AND THE LIKE Filed Jan. 24, 1922 Patented June 2, 1925.
aosnPH GANNON, or WALTON, new YORK.
FOLDING COT AND THE LIKE.
Application filed Januan 24, 1922. Serial No. 531,346.
fl '0 all whom it may concern. V
Be it known that I, Josnrri GANNoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Walton, in the county of Delaware and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements .in Folding Cots and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to folding cots and has for its object the provision of means whereby the cot will accomn'iodateitself to irregular-ties and unevenness of the ground upon which it is set up without causing corresponding unevenness in the canvas top.
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a portion of a folding cot constructed according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is an end view of the cot shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an end view of the cot in folded position.
Fig. 1 is a side view of the cot as shown in Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the method of connecting the side braces to the legs of the cot.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail showing the sliding joint between the braces of each pair.
Fig. 7 is a section through the joint shown in Fig. 6.
Referring to the drawings there is shown .a cot comprising transversely positioned pairs of legs 10, 11, 12, the legs of each pair being pivoted as at 13 near their middle portion. The pairs of legs are suitably braced by longitudinally positioned pairs of braces 15, 16, etc., the braces of each pair being pivoted near their middle portions as at 17, 18. The ends of the braces are connected 7 to the corresponding leg by a pivotal connection permitting transverse, but not longitudinal, swinging of the braces, so that the latter may be folded against the pairs of the cot, the canvas may be attached to hooks 26 carried at the upperends of the;
legs.
Hitherto, if a. cot were set up on uneven ground, the braces would transmit the unevenness from one pair of legs to all of the others, thus causing the top of the cot, i. e., the canvas, to be low in'certain places and high in others. Thus assume that the lower ends 30 of legs 11 were set up on a slight mound causing lower ends 30 to approach upper ends 31. If pivots 17 and 18 were fixed, the pivots 32 and 33 and the pivots 34. and 35 would move toward each other, and if the lower ends of legs 10 and 12 remained in contact with the ground the upper ends of these legs would be lower and the cot would be lower at these points than. at legs 11, since only the lower ends of legs 11 have moved, the upper ends remaining practical- 1y stationary. To avoid this unevenness in the canvas at the top of the cot, the pivots 17 and 18 are not fixed but are slidable. Each pivot comprises a collar 40, 4.1 (see Fig. 6), slidably engaging the outer face of each brace, and a. bolt 42 passing through both collars and both braces and operating in slots 43, 4 1 in the braces.
It is apparent from the above description that should the lower ends 30 (for example) stand on a slight mound so as to bring ends 30 nearer ends 31, ends 32 and 33 and ends 3 1 and 35 need not move relatively to each other at all, but that the variations in the positions of ends 30 and 31 are taken up, in this case, by a movement of pivot 17 to the right and of pivot 18 to the left. Similarly any variations in the positions of the ends of any pair of legs will not be transmitted to the other pairs of legs but will be taken up by the movable pivots. The canvas can thus at all times maintain its horizontality regardless of the ordinary variations usually present on the surface of the ground.
The above description illustrates a preferred embodiment of my invention, but it will be apparent that variations may be resorted to within the scope of the annexed claims. 1
3 Claims:
1. In a folding cot bed, a plurality of pairs of transversely extending legs, a pair of braces pivotally connecting each set of adjacent pairs of legs at the ends thereof, each pair of braces having a slot intermediate the ends thereof, a U-shaped collar slidably engaging the outer face and adjacent edges of each of said bnaces and a bolt extending through said slots and said collars for securing the collars to the braces.
2. In a device of the kind described, a plurality of pairs of transversely extending legs,
a pair of crossed braces pivotal-Ly comiectin-g each set of adjacent pairs of legs at the ends thereof, each pair of braces having guiding collars for the same intermediate the ends thereof engaging the outer faeeand adjacent edges of each of said braces, a pivot bolt for the braces connecting the collars together, and a slot in each of saidi braces at thecrossing point in wh-iclrsaid bolt isvadazpted. to operate.
In testimonywhereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
