To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE GAsoHKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in F inger-Ring Blanks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has as an object to provide a finger ring in which one or more precious stones may be set in an unusually easy, quick and secure manner.
A further purpose is to produce a ring in the form of a blank having a portion designed to be worn on the outer side of a finger, that is to say its most exposed portion, slit lengthwise from one fourth to one half its circumference, centrally of its width and expanded to facilitate the setting of gems therein.
Another aim is in the provision. of a ring made of precious metal, adapted to receive jewels directly in an incision in the ring body, or a gallery for the same, the incision being readily closed upon the gems by means well known to a jeweler.
These objects are accomplished by the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing an embodiment of the ring in its blank form.
Figure 2 is a side view of the same, partially broken away to show a group of gems as set therein.
Figure 3 is a front view of the complete assemblage.
Figure 4 is a side View of the ring, similar to Fig. 2 but showing a box setting disposed in the incision.
Figure 5 is a front view of the ring as closed upon the setting.
Figure 6 is another side view showing the ring as a solitaire or holding a single stone contained in a separate mounting.
Figure 7 is a front view thereof.
As has been set forth the main purpose of the invention is to provide finger ring blanks, made of any desired metal and in any size, as a stock article from which the jeweler may easily and expeditiously make a jewel holding ring, containing one or a considerable number of gems as may be required, the setting being accomplished by simply manipulating the inner surfaces of the slit portion of the blank in. a manner well knownin the art, no heavy cutting, bending or upsetting being required.
Referring to Fig. 1 of'the drawing, aplain band or ring of uniform cross section is shown, the back or portion usually disposed on the inner side of the finger being designated by the numeral 10.
At the front the ring blank is divided circumferentially producing two sides 1] and 12, the slit 13 extending as shown about one third of the circumference and the sides spread slightly apart.
This space is contracted to suit the size of the gems used, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 the largest stone 14 being at the center, the smaller 15 at the ends and the intermediate 16 therebetween, these stones being held after assembling by drawing minute portions or beads 17 of the ma terial over portion. of exposed edges of the stones as is commonly done, and closing any unused portions of the slit 13 so that upon finishing the ring no gap or even joint appears.
If it be preferred, a separate or independent box-like container or gallery 18 may be used to hold the stones and the gallery secured between the cleft portion of the ring as clearly indicated in Figs. 4 and 5.
In the case of a single jewel, the same may be held direct between the lips presented by the slit or preferably in a separate mounting, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the mounting 20 showing a plurality of prongs 21 firmly engaging the stone 22 and a shouldered. projection 23 extending into the space between the sides which are closed tightly upon the stone holding the setting and jewel. rigidly, the slit 13 being closed and burnished so that no trace of it appears. From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple device for this purpose has been disclosed in the preferred form of its embodiment, but it is not desired to restrict the details to the exact construction shown, it being obvious that changes, not involving the exercise of invention, may be made Without conflicting with the scope of the appended claim. 7

As a new article of manufacture, a finger ring blank having a solid back portion and a bifurcated front portion, the bifurcating slit extending more than one quarter and GEQBGE GASGHKE.
