EDWARD SCHNABB, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO BASTIAN BROTHERS COMPANY, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEVJ' YORK RING Application filed January 6, 1932. Serial No. 585,069.
This invention relates to jewelry and metal personal wear embodying gems, stones, jewels and ornamental settings.
The invention relates more particularly to settings whereby the gem, stone, jewel and ornament are retained in place.
In the embodiment illustrated, a ring for personal wear is shown. However, it is to be understood that e invention is designed for jewelry and articles of every variety provided with settings and ornaments.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts herein illustrated and described, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion, size, materials and minor details, without departing from the spirit of the invention as afforded in the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a ring illustrative of adaptation of the invention, certain parts being sectioned; V
Fig. 2 is a central circumferentially sectional view; and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fi 2;
Fig. l is a sectional view of a modification.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, the reference character 1 indicates a ring for purposes of illustration but the article with which the present invention is associated may be a body of other character, as for instance, a stickpin or the like. In this instance, there is illustrated a form of a metallic ring 1 which has a widened portion 2 and a flat face 3 through which an opening {i may be formed, if desired. This opening 4 may be of any configuration and it may be omitted, if desired and the face remain solid and flat.
A metal or other frame 5 may be soldered or otherwise secured to the face 8 and this frame has rising from it a bezel 6, the inner wall of which is tapered as shown at 7, there being an internal shoulder 8 at the base of th bezel 6.
A gem, stone, jewel or the like, 9, is supported on the shoulder 8 and has beveled edges 10, the bevel of the gem, stone, jewel or the like coacting with the taper of the inner wall of the bezel 6 to form substantially V-shaped recess to receive a metal or other supplemental fran e 11 substantially triangular or wet ge-shaped in cross section as shown and which is adapted to occupy said recess with a relatively snug fit between the bezel and the gem, stone, jewel or the like.
An ornament 12 of any suitable configuration or design lies on the gem, stone, jewel or the like, 9, and is provided with a plurality of arms 13 adapted to extend over the outer broad face of said supplemental frame 11 and soldered or otherwise secured thereto. The arms 13 are shown as provided with outwardly directed fingers 14: which are soldered to the supplemental frame 11 either before or after the supplemental frame is placed in position between the bezel and the gem, stone, jewel or the like. The lingers 14: may be omitted entirely and the edges of the outer ends of the arms 13 soldered or otherwise directly connected to the outer face of the supplemental frame 11. After the variouselements described are assembled and positioned as stated, it is simply necessary to burnish or otherwise turn or direct the outer edge of the bezel over onto the-outer face of the supplemental frame, as at I l to thereby effectively fasten all of thezelements together.
In Figure 4: is shown a modified form of the invention. In this instance, the gem, stone,
jewel or the like 9 has its outer face on the plane of the. outer face of the supplemental frame 11 and the'ornament 12 is soldered or otherwise secured on the outer face of the supplemental frame 11 at 1515. The ornament is not soldered to the bezel 6. This arrangement obviates the use of the arms 13 of Figures 1 to 23, inclusive, although the arms is of Figures 1 to 3, inclusive, are secured to the supplemental frame and not to the bezel.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that in either form of the present invention there is provided an ornamental article for personal wear, which may be in the form of a ring as shown or which may be in the form of a F stickpin or other article of ornamental variety and it will be seen that in every respect, the invention embodies simplicity, durability and a high character of ornamentation in which the parts are effectively secured together.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a body, a frame secured to the body and having a bezel provided with an inner tapering wall, the frame also havin an internal shoulder, a gem or the like seated on said shoulder and having beveled edges, a supplemental frame disposed on said shoulder and interposed between the bezel and the gem or the like and having tapering inner and outer walls corresponding to the beveled edges of the gem and the taper of the inner wall of the bezel, and an ornament secured to the supplemental frame, the outer edge of the bezel being directed over onto the supplemental frame.
2. he combination with a body, a frame secured to the body and having a bezel provided with an inner tapering wall, the frame also having an internal shoulder, a gem or the like seated on said shoulder and having beveled edges, a supplemental frame disposed on said shoulder and interposed between the bezel and the gem or the like and having tapering inner and outer walls corresponding to the bevelled edges of the gem and the taper of the inner wall of the bezel lying over the gem or the like, the outer edges of the bezel being directed over the supplemental frame.
3. The combination with a body, a frame secured to the body and having a bezel provided with an inner tapering wall, the frame also having an internal shoulder, a gem or the like seated on said shoulder and having beveled edges, a supplemental frame disposed on said shoulder and interposed between the bezel and the gem or the like and having tapering inner and outer walls corresponding to the beveled edges of the gem and the taper of the inner wall of the bezel, an ornament lying over the gem and having arms extending over the edges of the gem or the like and secured to the supplemental frame, the outer edge of the bezel being directed over the supplemental frame.
4. The combination with a body, a frame secured to the body and having a bezel, the frame also having an internal shoulder, a gem or the like seated on the shoulder, a supplemental frame disposed on said shoulder and interposed between the bezel and the gem or the like, and an ornament lying over the gem or the like and secured to said supplemental frame, the outer edge of the bezel being directed over the supplemental frame.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
EDWARD J. SCHNARR.
