To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT H. SIMMONS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oak Park, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Flatirons, of which the following is a specification.
'M invention relates to electric flatirons and as for its object a simple, reliable and economical construction of the various parts of the 'flatiron whereby the parts may be manufactured at low cost and easily and quickly assembled.
More specifically my'invention relates to an improved arrangement for supporting the terminal pins and'for securing the plug guard in place whereby the construction, assembly and repair of the flatiron is facilitated.
In carrying out my invention in one form I mount the terminal pins on an independent supporting member which is clamped be tween the handle support or handle and the cover, while for the purpose of securing the plug guard I provlde lugs on the guard which cooperate with corresponding apertures in the handle support and cover so that when the handle support is secured to the cover, wherebythe terminal support is secured, the plug guard is also secured in place.
For a better understanding of my invention reference should be had to the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is an eleartially in section, showing a flatiron embodying my invention while Fig. 2 is an exploded view showing the various parts in perspective.
Referringto Fig. l of the drawing, I have shown my invention in one form as applied to a well known type of electric flatiron comprising a sole plate 10 and a pres sure plate 11 between which the electric heating unit (not shown) of a suitable flat type is clamped, two terminals 12 for the heating unit being broughtout at the rear from between the pressure and sole plates. The pressure and sole plates may be secured together in any suitable manner, for example, by screws 13 and 14, and form together the heated body of the flatiron. A metallic cover 15 rests on the sole plate, which is slightly larger than the pressure plate, enclosing the pressure plate. This cover 15 may be secured in place, for example, by

means of spaced centrally located screws 16. and 17 passing therethrough which also pass through the handle support 18, thus securmg the handle in place.
In accordance with one form of my invention I provide a substantially T-shaped slot or aperture 19 (Fig. 2) in the rearward end of the cover 15 above the point where the terminals 12 are brought out. The cross portion 20 of the T-slot extends transversely of the flatiron while the shank portion 21 extends a short distance in the direction of the clamping screw 17; The metal of the cover leading from the shank portion 21 is stuck down slightly to a point just beyond the aperture 17* for the screw 17, to form a recess 22, the recess being rectangular and slightly enlarged around aperture 17. This aperture 19 is provided for the terminal. pins 23 which project upward centrally through the cross portion 20 and for the support for the terminal pins which extends through the portion 21.
The support forthe terminal pins comprises an independent metallic member 24 having a shape substantially corresponding to that of the aperture 19. The cross 25 of the supporting member 24 is slightly longer and wider, however, than the portion 20 of the aperture 19 and is positioned inside the cover so as to close portion 20 The shank 26 of the supporting member extends through the shank portion 21 of the aperture 19, the support lying at a slight angle with the horizontal, at which point it is bent downward slightly so as to lie in the recess 22. The shank fits in the recess 22 and is provided with an aperture 26 registering with aperture 17*. At the rear end of the supporting member 24 is an extension or lug 27 which is stuck upward and over to the rear so as to rest on the cover 15 at the rearward edge of aperture 19.and thus form a support for the rear end of supporting member 24. The supportin member is thus held in place by screw 1%, which passes through aperture 26, in the recess 22 between the handle support and the cover, its opposite end 25 being secured against movement in an upward direction by its engagement with the lower surface of the cover 15 and being secured against movement in a downward direction by extension 27. The terminal pins 23 are secured in spaced and insulated relation in apertures 28 and 29 in whereby the terminals are held centrally in apertures 28 and 29. K
The plug guard 32 is smured at two points to the handle support and cover respectively by means of lugs 33 and 34.- carried thereby. Lug 33 is located on the side of the plug guard adjacent the handle support and near the top edge of the plug guard. As shown, the plug guard is stamped from a single piece of metal with the two,
ends of the piece brought together in abut ting relation on a line with lug 33 so that the lug may be, and is, shown, as formed by bending outwardly a suitably shaped projection from each end of the stamping. Lug 33 is hook shaped with its opening at the top so that when inserted in the slot 33 in the handle support provided for it, it engages with the upper edge of the slot 33 and is tightly clamped bythe screws 16 and 17 drawinge'down on the handle support 18. The lug 3% is similar in shape, but has its opening, however, at the left hand side, as shown in Fig. 2. It is adapted to fit in an L-shaped slot 34: in the rear end of cover 15 just behind the aperture 19. In putting the plug guard in place lug 34 is inserted in the longer portion of slot 3 1. It is then moved slightly to the left until it hooks under the left hand edge of the slot and then pulled forward slightly so that it fits in the forward or narrower portion of the slot. A suitable heel rest 35 is provided which is secured to the rearward end of the cover 15 by means of suitable lugs cooperating with corresponding slots in the cover. The rearward side of the plug guard is provided with an integral extension 36 which cooperates with the heel rest 35 in forming a suitable support for the flatiron when it is placed on end.
The handle support 18 is provided with two pairs of down turned lugs 18 and 18 adjacent the apertures for screws 16 and 17, whereby the handle bow is held in spaced relation and hence heat insulated relation with the cover. The ends of these lugs fit in recesses in the cover, lugs 18" fitting in recess 22. To provide for clamping the terminal support 24 between the handle how and the cover, the shank portion 26 of the terminal support is bent upward slightly at its end.
In assembling the flat iron, the terminal pins, which have previously been secured to the terminal supporting member, are first secured to the terminals 12 of the heating imit. The heating unit is then clamped between the sole plate and the pressure plate. Cover 15 is then put in place, the terminal support being at the same time fitted in its proper position. In the next step lug 34 of the plug guard is fitted in aperture 34, as previously described, after which the handle support is secured to the plug guard by fitting lug 33 in aperture 33". The handle support is then put in place on the cover and clamped in place by screws 16 and 17, care being taken that the terminal support is in proper position. The terminal support is thus secured in place by screw 17 while the plug guard is secured by virtue of the fixed relation established between the handle support and cover 15.
It will thus be observed that by means of my invention all members are made easily accessible for assembling and the various members are secured together with the smallest possible number of screws. The assembly of the terminal pins is of particular advantage since the terminal pins can be secured to the terminals of the heating unit without the difficulty of reaching underneath the cover experienced when the terminal pins are secured directly to the cover. The method of securing the plug guard is also particularly advantageous since it will be observed that no additional screws'or rivets are required, nor is it necessary to bend over lugs in securing the plug guard. In fact, it will be observed that after the terminal pins have been secured to the terminals of the heating unit and the heating unit clamped in place, the various parts are simply assembled together after which they are all secured by means of the screws 16 and 17.
In the appended claims the term handle is defined to include the handle support as well as the handle itself.
While I have described my invention as embodied in concrete form and as operating in a specific manner in accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, it should be understood that I do not limit my invention thereto, since various modifications thereof will suggest themselves to thoseskilled in the art without departing from the spirit of my invention the scope of which is set forth in the annexed claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. An electric flat iron comprising a heated body, a cover therefor, a handle carried by said cover, a plug guard. and means for interlocking said plug guard with said handle and cover so that when said handle is secured to said cover said plug guard is locked in place.

An electric flat iron comprising a heated body, a cover therefor, a handle carried by said cover, a plug guard, interlocking means between said plug guard and said handle and cover, and means for securing such manner that when said handle is se- 1 cured to said cover the plug guard is locked in place. i
4. An electric fiat iron comprising a heated body, a heating unit therefor, terminal pins for said heating unit, a cover for said body, a handle carried by said cover, and a support for said terminal pins secured between said handle and cover.
5. An electric flatiron comprising a heated body, a heating element therefor, a cover for said body provided with an aperture, terminal pins for said heating element projecting from said aperture, a handle carried by said cover, and a support for said terminal pins provided with a shank portion clamped between said handle and cover.
6. An electric flatiron comprising a heated body, a heating element therefor, terminal pins for said heating element, a support therefor, a cover for said body, a handle carried by said cover, and a screw forming a common clamping means for said cover, handle and terminal pin support.
7. An electric flatiron comprising a heated body, a heating element therefor, terminal pins for said heating element, a support therefor, a plug guard around said terminal pins, a cover for said body, a handle carried by said cover, and means securing said hand e to said cover for securing said terminal pin support and plug guard in place.
8. An electric flatiron comprising a heated body, a heating element therefor, terminal pins for said heating element, an independent support therefor, a plug guard surrounding said terminal pins, a cover for said body, a handle carried by said cover, and a screw forming a common means for securing said handle, cover, terminal support and plug guard in a predetermined relation to said heated body.
9. An electric flatiron comprising a heated body, a heating unit therefor, a cover for said body provided with an aperture, terminal pins for said heating element projecting from said aperture, a handle carried by said cover, a plug guard surrounding said terminal pins provided with lugs engaging said cover and handle in such manner that when said handle is secured to said cover the plug guard is secured in place, and a support for said terminal pins secured between said handle and cover.
