To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS D. Frmzro, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kitchawan, Westchester county, in the State of New -York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Irons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements in electric irons, and the same has for its object more particularly to rovide a simple, eflicient and reliable device which is composed of the fewest parts possible, and which is not liable to get out of order.
Further said invention'has for its object to provide an electric iron in which the heating medium is constructed as a single unit which may be readily inserted into or removed from the iron without necessitating the making of any electric connections.
Further said invention has for its object to provide an electric iron in which the heat ing element is composed essentially of two parts, namely; a heat producing medium and a heat emitting medium joined together as a single unit.
Further said invention has for its object to provide an electric ironin which the heating medium is composed of a soapstone slab having an electrical resistance element embedded therein, and the ends of said resistance secured to terminals arranged upon said soapstone slab.
Further said invention has for its object to provide an electric iron having a combined attaching plug guard and iron support formed as a single structure, and secured to the iron.
Other objects will in part be obvious, and in part be pointed out hereinafter.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends my invention consists in the novel details of construction, and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims.

In said drawings 10 designates a plate formed of cast iron, having the contour of a usual iron, upon which is disposed a comparatively thick slab of soapstone 11 which is conformed in outline to said plate 10 and secured thereto by screws 12, 12 which extend through the handle bail 13, and through said soapstone slab 11, and into the plate 10. The handle guard 13 is provided at its u per ends with a handle 14: which is secure termediate the ends of the handle bail by a screw 15. j
The heating element comprising the soapstone slab 11 is provided in its underside with a recess 11*, preferably as shown at Fig. 3, and within said recess is secured by a suitable cement 11 a coil of resistance wire 16 having its ends 17, 18 secured to inclined terminals 17, 18' extending from the upper side of said soapstone slab downwardly into the same and provided at their inner ends with nuts 19, 19 whereby the ends of the terminals 17 18 may be secured to said contacts 17 18'.
2O denotes a cover preferably stamped out of sheet metal and conforming in outline substantially to the plate 10 and the soapstone slab 11, and secured in position over said soapstone slab 11' by the attaching. screws 12, '12. The cover 20 ispreferably made slightly larger in outline than the heating member 11 in order to leave an air s ace entirely surrounding the same, and a ong its lower edge said cover 20 is pro vided at suitable intervals with apertures 21. In order to insure the circulation of air' between said cover 20 and said heating medium, said cover may be provided at its upper side with one or more apertures or o 7 gs 22.
23 denotes a combined attaching plug guard and iron support which is preferably made of sheet metal and formed as a unitary structure, comprising a transverse member 24, of substantially U-shaped cross-section forming 92} part of the support for iron. The upper end of said inclined portion extends outwardly and then inwardly again, at substantially right-angles to the inclined portion 25, to form a rounded member 27 serving as the other part of the support for. the iron. The'inwardly extending portion 28 of said support is made conslderably wider than the said support and is provided with a transverse opening 29 to receive an attaching plug, and from the edge of said portion 28,- opposite to the rounded member 27, extends upwardly a member 30. having a threaded aperture therein to receive the end of the screw 15 which passes through the'handle 14, and serves to secure the same to the handle bail. At the inner edge of the support 24 are rovided inwardly and downwardly exten 'ng projections 31 which'are adapted to be received by recesses 32 provided in the upper surface of the plate 10 adjacent to its rear edge whereby the flat horizontal portion of the heel 24 of the member 23 will be held 1 in position intermediate the underside of'the soapstoneslab 11 and the upper surface of the plate 10.

It is to be noted particularly that by means of'my construction the heating member comprising the soapstone slab 11 and the resistance element embedded therein, whose ends are connected to the terminals 17 18f the said heating member may be inserted into or removed from the iron as aunit without requiring the making of any electrical connections to render the same operative. In an apparatus of the character described, a heating member formed as a unitary structure comprising a heat absorbing element, a heat emitting element embedded therein, and contact members on said heat absorbing element for connecting said heat emitting element with a source of electric energy, substantially as specified.

In an apparatus of the character described, a heating member formed as a unitary structure comprising aheat-absorbing element having a recess therein, an electric heating element disposed within said recess, and contact members secured to said heat absorbing member and connected to said electric heating element, substantially as specified. In an apparatus of the character described, a heatlng member formed as a unitary structure comprising an electric nonconducting, heat absorbing element, an electric heating element associated therewith, and contact members secured in said heat absorbing element and connected to said elecpirifi: heating element, substantially as speci- 10. In an apparatus of the character described, a heating member formed as a unitary structure comprising a soap-stone element having a recess therein, an electric resistance element embedded therein, and contact members secured in said soap-stone element having their inner ends connected to said electric resistance element, and having their outer ends adapted for connection with asource of electric energy, substan-- ceive an attaching plug, attaching means extending from said transverse members, and clips extending from the opposite edges of said web adapted to engage said attaching plug, substantially as specified.
13. In an electric iron, a combined iron support and attaching plug guard formed of a single piece comprising a pair of transverse members united by a web; one of said members having an opening therein to receive an attaching plug, attaching means extending from said transverse members, and clips extending from the opposite edges of said web adapted to en age said attaching plug at its opposite si es, substantially as specified.
